Being naturally affectionate, he didn't comment on her withdrawal from his touch. He'd bring her round, see if he didn't! But he'd paused when she'd spoken, stilling his hooves for what (for him) was a rather long time, so that he might catch her words. Complicated, huh?

He pricked his ears and waited for her to draw up next to him before moving at a much slowed pace from his usual one. It seemed like more was to be told. "S'alright, you can tell me," he replied quietly, though intently. "Howsit complicated?" He glanced at her sideways with an encouraging smile. It seemed he was a born nurturer, much like his mother, though he wasn't aware of it yet. He felt the urge to coax the love out of this young friend of his, encourage her to happiness and contentment that seemed to be lacking somehow. How he knew that, he couldn't have told. He just knew. She needed his family. His mother would definitely help put this to rights.

She almost paused when he paused, until it dawned upon her that he was but waiting for her to approach. Step by step, she finally made it up to his side, though made sure to keep a comfortable space between them. Again, it would do no good to crowd the little purple colt, not at all!

Her little ears, partially pinned, turned towards him as Toby continued. He wanted to know? Oh, but did she dare say? It was one thing to tell the hurt to her father - Ezriel hurt, and understood the pain. It was another thing to listen to Reaper, to admit it to the not-so-angel-grandpa because of his own pain and his own ideas. But to this purple one? Did she dare express such confusion to him? SHE hardly understood what to do or think, much less understand how a stranger might feel.

For a long moment she was quiet as she trudged forward, not really going anywhere but ready to follow his lead and change direction should she need to; well, it wouldn't hurt to express it, would it? . . . .maybe. Well, it was too late to go back now - she was in too deep and didn't think he'd leave the subject alone to fester. Focusing on the snow, not daring to look up at him, her little whispered voice finally broke through the silence.

"Well. . . its me I run from. It's . . .it's all me. I - I don't fit in my family very well and I . . . . " How did she explain it? Frowning, she bit her lip before adding even softly, hardly audible, "I hurt. I . . . It won't be fixed. It can't be fixed. But it . . . . I don't. . . . I don't seem to fit anywhere. So I run - I run as fast I can so I don't have to think about standing still long enough to have to fit.

And that was that. wasn't it? Given, that hardly made any sense, and it couldn't easily be understood, but in the chopped up, PG version of the story of her life, that was it. No matter how much she wanted to befriend her newest best friend, Tobias, she knew there would be a great barrier between them. . . .a rift of hurt, of pain, opf shadows and night.

It separated her from her mothers side, and yet, it kept her away from many of her fathers side too. She wasn't different ENOUGH to be one of them, and was too skewed to fit in with Eponine's family.

There for, she fit no where. And that was that. Ears pinned, not daring to look at him, she hurried her walk so he might shrug it off and bring her to this mother person. Not that it would fix anything, but she could oblige.

He paused again, as her words struck his heart. Hyper though the colt may be, his soul was tender and loving. Her words pierced him through and through. How would it feel, to be sure you had nowhere you fit in? Not even with your family? Her sadness made more sense now.

His thoughts moved quickly, as she began to move away. But what made him feel he fit in with his family? Was it how he looked? Well, there was no denying he resembled both his parents, but that wasn't where the belonging happened, was it? He moved after Cassiel, his thoughts rambling over each other much as his hooves tended to. He wished he could talk to his mother about this before he tried to tell his new friend what he was thinking. But... maybe it was best to have her involved.

Even so, as he moved up next to the red and white foal, his eyes were gentler, and he purposely leaned over to nuzzle her. "Mama will know what you mean, I bet. She can 'splain better than I can." And with that cryptic answer, he moved briskly along towards his mother.

================================================

It wasn't long before he could smell her on the breeze. She always smelled of good things... wild oats, sweet flowers, and warm hide. He wanted to break into a mad gallop for her, but had not forgotten his ragtag friend, who seemed to meek and timid. She'd need him, he was sure. So he continued to trot beside her, neighing for his mother to come meet them.

He smiled proudly as she came around a bend in the trail to meet them. His mother was beautiful. Her curled mane flowed like the ocean's tide, and her stripey legs moved like... well, like something lovely, anyway! When she drew near enough, he whickered happily to her and swished his tail merrily. "Mama, this is Cassiel, and she has a problem," he began bluntly. Tact wasn't quite his strong suit quite yet. "She runs away because she thinks something is wrong with her. She doesn't belong. She thinks it's her own fault." His face became pensive and wistfully sad. "Mama, can you tell her what family is?"

Luca was more than happy to discover one of her sons bringing a friend to meet her. She prepared to be pleasant and teasing... until her son's forward nature revealed a deeper need. Her eyes rested warmly upon the small filly as Tobias finished his plea. The poor darling...

"Now Cassiel dear, what makes you think you don't belong with your family?" She moved close to nuzzle the little thing and huff her grass-scented breath along the foal's neck. "Come, talk with me and Tobi about it." She moved behind her and nudged her firmly from behind, directing the young soquili up the path and around the corner, where a glade with a small pool awaited them.

Cassiel said nothing as her new purple coated friend gave her reassurances and took her over to meet with his mother. Mother. . . she had one, her name was Eponine and she was white and blue. Cassiel didn't look at all like her, save perhaps for a similar coat pattern; but all the colours were wrong, and sometimes the little mare wondered if she really was related to Eponine! Oh, she knew such a thing to be true. . . .

But at the same time. . . . well. . . .

Oh what did it matter. She did have a family, and one that seemed to love her very much. It just confused her to look so different, to act so different, and to not know what was going on with the others in her life. The young red and white mare wasn't sure what to do - she wanted to meet the rest of her family, wanted to bond closer with her father and yet. . . . well. . . . it didn't seem like such an easy task.

In fact, ever since her birth life didn't seem so easy and she wasn't sure why! Oh, she wasn't cast out from heaven like her not-so-angel-grandpa had been, and she wasn't tormented by others for looking different like Ezriel but. . . . Something made it so she didn't seem to click with either side. Perhaps it was just her inner darkness manipulating her to believe such a thing, perhaps it wasn't true in the least and yet. . . . there it was. A giant gap too big for the little filly to cross, or to stitch together.

What had happened to form it? The little one just didn't know.

As soon as the purple mare came in to sight, Cassiel could only stare. Her shyness became overwhelming, and her black tail swished nervously back and forth behind her. She was awfully beautiful with her curls and her stripes, and it was easy to see where her new friend Toby found his coat pattern. Still. . . . . . When the strange mother actually approached and reached down to nuzzle her, Cassiel almost flinched and cringed.

Uh-oh. . . .what had she gotten herself in to? At the nudge from behind, black eyes widened and she lurched forward, almost as if she'd been struck to move! Pushing herself through the snow, she cast a worried glance behind her at both Luca and Tobi but allowed herself to be lead. No, she didn't want to upset either of the two. . . .

And talk? Talk!? Oooooh - Cassiel wasn't sure that sounded like a good plan either. Ears pinning, head lowered, the pink and white one did her best to find her voice and words.
"I . . . I dunno if want to talk. . please. I m-mean. . . . it's. . . it's complicated." And it was, kind of, if only because she didn't understand what made her so different and wrong either!

Casting a shy look up at both Tobi and Luca, she cringed, awaiting their reaction. Whatever it might be. So much for making a new friend when he was going to get mad because she wasn't cooperating.

The filly's body language was all cringing and fear. What had happened to this poor waif? Luca was inwardly frowning, though her expression outwardly was gentle in the extreme. Something clearly had gone wrong here for such a young filly to act so cowed and afraid.

She nodded amiably when Cassiel spoke, and eased herself gracefully to the ground, where she reclined. Her entire body spoke of being at ease, of quietness, of calm. She did her best to exude this, to help ease the filly's fears, whatever they were. "Alright, then. Let's not talk. Would it be alright if we all took a nap together instead?" She tipped her head to squint at the piercing sun. Spring was coming, so it's fierceness was renewed, though not quite enough to melt most of the snow. Still, the thin layer of snow beneath her, near the water, melted and soaked into the thirsty earth, leaving a warming patch of rich soil to curl up on.

She gave her son a look and tipped her head. They didn't normally sleep curled together, though it wasn't a rarity either. But Luca's motherly sense insisted that this youngster needed loving touch, the warmth of another's affection. She clearly wasn't used to it, but ALL little ones needed it to grow strong and confident. She hoped to lure her close, at least a little
.

While he might not have known exactly what his mother was planning or why, he did get the message. He scampered over eagerly and flung himself onto the ground beside her, inching himself until he was propped up against her warm purple body. He turned bright eyes to his friend. "It's safe, I promise. We like to take cat-naps, as Mama calls them. It helps recharge m'batteries." He grinned lopsidedly. His batteries did indeed need recharging sometimes, as much as he moved and used up that energy. He wasn't especially sleepy before, but just the suggestion of a cozy nap was beginning to work on his young mind. Unexpectedly, his jaws opened in a massive yawn, and his lids drooped. "C'mere....,: and with that, he was out, fast as anything else he did.

Cassiel hesitated, studying both her quickly dozing friend as well as this new Lady Luca. Her tail swished nervously, shyly, and the darkness reminded her that she was no good to them. Still. . . . It was kind of chilly, and the pair did look mighty comfortable. She frequently curled up with Eponine for warmth during the chilly days, or even Grandpa Twilight. But with strangers. . . . .

Well, he wasn't a stranger, Toby was a friend! The sun on her back was warm, and the gentle nature of the mare was so much like her mother, except without the moments of sadness. Hmmm. She glanced around, almost searching for her own mother to come stomping over the hillside to rescue her, but found nothing. No, she had run far from her famlily this day - and making her way back had yet to occur to the little filly. The yawn of her friend had been passed to the young one, and she herself couldn't help but yawn too.

Uh-oh. . . .maybe she was tired! And batteries? Did her little friend actually run on them or was he being silly? Her ears pricked slightly, and very, very slowly she approached. She kept her head lowered, and found a comfortable spot closer to her friend than Luca but quickly adjusted so as not to offend to the new lady. Settled comfortably, albeit a bit nervously, Cassiel let her black gaze peer up at the purple one.

Would she really sleep? Or was she just going to watch them? Casting another yawn, her body had yet to relax completely, and she seemed to fight the urge to doze. . . . But warmth around her was alluring. Hesitantly, she rested her head a top the lump that was her snoozing purple friend Toby, and with a sigh stared. . . .

No sleep yet.

No sleep yet.

But the war was getting very hard indeed.

Sensing that the young one was fragile in her trust, Luca tucked her chin to her chest and champed her teeth lightly in a gesture of contentment. Oh, how she loved little ones like these? She longed to lavish them both with nuzzles and nibbles. But again, her instincts told her that Cassiel was not ready for that. She quietly accepted the little filly's nearness, though she did nonchalantly flick her tail, so that it draped somewhat over the white and red foal. Such protectiveness was roused in Luca by this needful child! She wasn't about to force Cassiel into doing anything she really didn't want to do. Even so, there were clearly things that she lacked. If noone else could, Luca would gladly fill those needs.

Cassiel wasn't sure what else to do. The draw for sleep continued to beckon, but it was a difficult war to fight. She trusted the violet and yellow streaked foal beside her, and yet she knew very little how to respond to the mother. Luca seemed gentle and sweet and caring - maybe even fun and rambunctious like her son! There was no sadness or shadow when she looked in to her eyes; there was no shimmer of dismay that reflected off Cassiel and darkened the gaze . . . .

Luca was both very similar and yet very much not the same as Eponine and the little filly wasn't entirely sure how to respond. Still, sleep beckoned, and after her race today she couldn't help but begin to relax. With warmth surrounding her, and a new friend by her side, pink and white slowly, slowly began to relax. Heaving a little sigh, she rested her head gingerly atop of Toby's before allowing her eyes to drift shut.

It didn't take her too long to be comforted by her friends steady breaths, as well as the warmth of Lady Luca. Though her dreams were a bit restless, the little catnap distracted Cassiel far enough away from her current anxieties and fears.

((Sorry for the shortness. o o; Sleep called my lil' filly.))
