Contrary to what her son obviously believed, Ju was not asleep, and could hear her son running around behind her back. She sighed to herself and decided to pick her battles, and leave this one alone. She was still tired, and didn't really want to pick an argument with him right now.
Shen smiled at his brother, and felt a bit of colour rise in his cheeks. He hadn't ever heard anything like this from his brother. It seemed that he really did care about him, but just had a conflict with their mother.
"Thank you, Huojin. I really appreciate that."
He chanced a look over at their resting mother and sighed.
"Well, I don't think she means to be difficult. I'm not entirely sure she enjoys being a mother. When has she ever said that she loves us? And she never even says anything to me. Sometimes I wonder if she knows that I'm around, you know? But I don't want to act up, because I don't want to upset her. I'd rather her ignore me than yell at me. To me, that seems better."

The way Shen described their mother was right on, and Huojin stopped his movements and listened carefully to his brother. He had no idea that Shen felt that way, and he nudged at him gently before smiling happily. "See, but I think its the opposite! Mom trusts you, and knows that you will act the right way. She has faith in you, so there is nothing for her to worry about. If you wanted attention, I'm sure you could just say something smart or help her out, and then she will praise you. She praises you with her silence!"
Since it was the opposite for Huojin, he found it easy to read his brother's conflict. "Well, if mom doesn't like being a mother or something, we can just do as she says, so there IS less conflict. I know I make it hard on her, but that's because sometimes she yells at us for no reason. So really, even I get confused!" He and his brother would have to figure something out it seemed, and Huojin sighed before feeling very exhausted on the thought of their mother. "I think we are awesome as children.. Maybe she will agree one day?"

She was quite bothered that they didn't even think to lower their voices. Obviously, she was trying to rest, but her children kept yapping on as if there was nothing different. She sighed and stood up. Looking at her sons over her shoulder, she scowled at them and stomped one of her bangled feet. She moved along the banks, making her way to the opposite side of the pond so that she might be out of earshot of them.
Shen listened to his brother in turn and smiled as he received a caring nudge from him. It seemed that his brother cared more than he let on. Shen had always thought that he just acted up for the hell of it and didn't care about how Shen or his mother felt about his behaviour.
"Perhaps that would help. I'm sure if we just listen to her, things will be fine. I just don't like hearing her yell all the time. But I'm actually starting to get used to it. I've started to tune it out, so that I don't really hear her."
He sighed. He hadn't met many other foals and heard how they lived with their families, but he had a feeling that most families weren't like this. That usually, there was much more love than anybody in this family ever experienced.

"Why don't we go join her, and we can take a nap for her?" Huojin watched his mother walk away, and she shook his head unhappily. "Maybe THAT will make her happy?" Hm. Sometimes it seemed hopeless! "Tuning it out sounds like a brilliant idea, I should really stop paying attention. I can't help how my brain works, but I'm sure I can start training as well." The thought sounded appealing, and he bounced happily before returning to his brother's side. "At least when we are grown up, we will have time away from mom. I wonder if she would miss us?" And, would Huojin miss her? He shuddered quietly while thinking about the strange thought!

After reaching the other side of the pond, she lay down again and looked across the water to her sons. She preferred this place for more than one reason. She couldn't hear them talking, and she could also keep an eye on them. She smiled to herself, satisfied at her decision.
Shen smiled at his brother. He was overjoyed that he was making some progress and that they were learning more about each other. His brother seemed to have a lot on his mind, and Shen had a feeling that it was good for him to get it all off his chest.
"That might be a good idea, but then again, she might call us lazy if we lay down for a nap."
He chuckled at the though, knowing that he was probably right.
"Perhaps we can just ask her to go home or something and then she'll be comfortable at home, and we can explore a bit?"
He smiled as his brother stood beside him. He realized how happy he really was to have a sibling. He didn't know what he would do if he was an only child. Though Huojin was sometimes very annoying, he didn't think he would feel right if he wasn't there.
"I'm sure she'll miss us somewhere in her heart. Come on, let's see if she wants to go now."
And with that, he made his way towards the bank of the pond, closer to his mother lying on the other side.

Huojin only let out a loud "OK!" and he happily followed his brother around the pond. He was also relieved at their brotherly and friendly conversation, since they had never taken the time to truly understand each other. Being opposites was sort of nice, since it made everything way more exciting and interesting.
For now though, he would happily let his brother take the lead, since Shen was a much better thinker and plotter anyways!
