so, then, can anyone tell me what each planet stands for?
Ascendant - how you appear to others
Sun - conscious self, ego, identity
Mercury - how you think and communicate
venus - romantic relationships, also friendships to an extent
moon - your emotions, emotional reactions and how you view your home
mars - how you go about getting what you want, sex
jupiter - luck, friends, possibly some other stuff
saturn - not sure. I think it's supposed to be a karma planet, not generally great.
uranus - not sure, but it's the 'wierd' planet and is supposed to be a higher form of the same energy as mercury
neptune - spiritual stuff, also a 'higher form' but I can't remember what of (venus? moon?). Also creativity, I think.
Pluto - again, not sure. Maybe obsessions?
Keep in mind that the sign influence of the outer planets - say, maybe jupiter or saturn onward - is generational since they spend so long in a given sign. But you should pay attention to what houses they end up in since houses shift along so quickly.
