She nodded. "That is why small creatures make burrows. It stays warmer underground. If you're under the snow then there's no wind to bother you." The little pocket would just stay as warm as you were. "It isn't ... well i wouldn't think it would be warm as a fire but it is better than sleeping out in the wind"

"I-I've never been near any fires," Kal said quickly, shaking his head. He was comforted by being within sight of them at night, but the smells and bustle of the two legger village kept him from actually approaching. "A-and I don't sleep in the wind, exactly, but it's still cold."

"They're warm ... though i wouldn't want to get too close to them" She shook her head slightly and laughed before she stepped across the thicker ice so she was on the same side of the stream as him. "You should try it some time. It's a wonderful way to stay warm"

Kal's eyes widened almost comically as she approached. "G-going n-near a fire? B-but th-they always have two leggers around them!" He sidestepped nervously, muttered something unintelligible under his breath, and fluffed his feathers a bit. Sure there were those who lived with two leggers, and the two legger foal that left treats near where he slept might be okay, but he couldn't shake his fear of them.

"You've never seen a forest fire?" She tilted her head and looked at him slightly confused. She would have thought everyone would know what those were. She'd only seen a little one but it was enough to make her not want to go near them.

Kal's expression only got more nervous, if that was even possible. "Th-there a-are fires in the forest too? W-without two leggers?" That thought was about as frightening as being roped in by two leggers and being kept by them. His jittery stepping was slowly flattening the snow in a small circle around him, but he didn't seem to notice in the slightest.

"Yes ..." It was starting to be slightly unnerving that the stallion didn't know what fires were. "Lighting causes them. Storms and such .... forest fires?"
PostPosted: Mon Jan 21, 2008 7:36 pm

Lightning caused it's own fires? Kal had known to find shelter when thunderstorms came through, but he had never known about that. It was one thing the stallion had never seen first hand, and probably hadn't been told about it as a foal before leaving his home because he would have been even more frightened then as he was now.

"Y-you've seen a forest fire?" He asked, mentally fretting over what he would do if there was ever one nearby.

She nodded. "It was very pretty ... though i wouldn't have stuck around to see it any more than i did. Fires are nasty things." She did like the ones the two leggers made though. They seemed to be able to control it in a way.

Kal was surprised. "I-I didn't know fires were pretty. I don't go close enough the village fires to actually see them, they just look like little flickering bits of light from where I sleep."

Thinking about them differently seemed to calm the little alicorn's nerves slightly, and he began to look more thoughtful than frightened. Then a huge shiver ran up his back and he looked just plain miserable. He really wasn't liking winter much.

"I don't think i'd ever want to be close enough to one again to see how pretty it was. Once was enough." She laughed as she thought about that. She'd seen it and now she could cross that off the list of things to do in her life.

"I do try to stay away from the two leggers though. Some of them just don't seem ... well all that trust worthy." She would rather not end up with her wings clipped somehow.

Kal nodded in agreement, both to staying away from fire and two leggers. "I live near them, but I try to stay out of sight, and I don't ever go into their village. I don't want to get caught and tied up." He didn't know how others could live in captivity like that, good food didn't seem worth the price of freedom. Well, at least not during the non-winter months when food was more abundant.

Unfortunately that train of thought just reminded the little alicorn how hungry he was. "Uhm... Did you want to come find breakfast with me?" He asked almost bashfully.

"Why would you live near them?" She seemed confused by that thought. If he didn't want to get caught wouldn't it be best to just stay away from them completely?

"Breakfast sounds good .... i didn't manage to find anything good before the storm hit." She'd missed dinner the night before thanks to the snow everywhere.

"N-no r-reason," he replied quickly, nervously turning around and starting off towards the nearby meadow. The last thing he wanted to do right then was admit he was afraid of the dark.

He slowed down after a couple steps, hesitantly glancing back. "I-it was pretty bad, I-I d-didn't go out later in the afternoon either..." He hadn't gone completely hungry though, there had been a tiny flake of hay and small withered apple by his usual sleeping location. The two legger foal had probably dropped by during the day while he was out. Thankfully that was the only two legger who seemed to pay him any notice, living as close to the village as he did.

"I just curled up where you found me and decided to sleep it out. easier than trying to think about being hungry and such." IT meant she was ravenous now that she thought about it but she hadn't been hungry while asleep.
