Calhoun scratched at the side of his cheek, contemplating as he watched Roku pass by into the kitchen. He waited a few moments before replying Nicea, wanting the dragon to be out of the room before he took a chance to speak. After all, if Roku wasn't within earshot, he couldn't interject his own thoughts into the conversation, as he was so prone to doing when he felt like it. Hopefully this wasn't one of those days...

"Yeah, I know him. We live in the same apartment complex," he said, glancing back to check to see if the dragon had actually gone where he was headed before turning back to the squirrel. "Though he's far from being a 'friendly neighbor,'" he continued, giving Nicea a small smile. He was glad for the interruption on the case with his... reading disability, though he would have preferred something less drastic. "He doesn't get along with many people. It just doesn't seem like he tries, you know?"

He fidgeted again, uncomfortable speaking about him. The two of them had never been on the best of terms. Roku always seemed to start a conversation with aggression, and although Calhoun didn't like to pass such quick judgement, the dragon had never shown any improvement in demeanor to deem any change in what the stag thought of him. He hoped that would change some day -- Cal didn't like disliking anyone -- but he was pretty sure nothing was going to change.

He cleared his throat, "Anyway, back to what we were talking about before. In truth, most people probably refuse to face reality like that as a way of self-preservation. They're afraid of the outcome, and so will do what they can to avoid it, lest it be bad. Most people will avoid a possibly good event if there's a chance it'll be bad. They'll miss a lot in life that way, but it's their own choice." He shrugged, "I'm not about to stop them, but some eventually accept it as an inevitability and learn to deal."

"Hmph, like you're any expert," Roku snorted from the other room. He had made a sandwich by now and was currently leaning himself against the doorway, half in the living room with them and a foot still in the kitchen. He bit into the sandwich before gesturing with it toward the stag, "And you were half-referring to me with that statement, weren't you? Afraid of outcomes, yeah? Like you should be talking, you rarely get out. And carrying around that bazooka of yours? Don't even try to tell me that's not a way for you to avoid contact!" He ripped another bite out of his sandwich angrily; although a little paranoid on the matter, his accusations weren't without probable cause.

Calhoun flushed, scowling at the floor as he kept his eyes away from the dragon. If no eye contact was made, Calhoun wouldn't be tempted to raise his voice. "No, I was referring to people in general, but you could learn a thing or two if you just listened to others for once," he replied simply, trying to ignore the other comments; they hit too close to home, whether he realized it or not.

Turning back to Nicea, he gave the squirrel an apologetic look. "Sorry about all this. If you wanted to go somewhere else...?" he asked, hinting it with a slight Take me with you! tone.

Roku snorted, growling. "Don't try to shelter him, deer-boy. Or are you just trying to run away from your own problems?"

Nicea's tail flicked lightly as he watched how cautious Calhoun seemed making him curious about the situation between them. Giving an understanding nod he watched the kitchen door quietly, "I see..." There really weren't any 'unapproachable' hybrids in the estate, least not that he couldn't think of. Everyone was different, but there werent any drastic personality differences.

Ears perking he glanced back at Calhoun as they went back to the reality facing conversation. He was about to reply when he was rudely interrupted by another voice that wasn't Calhoun's. It seemed Roku was going to visit...

Frowning lightly he watched quietly, disapproving of pretty much all of the dragons attitude, not to mention manners... One should not motion to others with their food... His ears went back as he glanced at Calhoun. It seemed there were just insult flying straight towards the stag, how horrible!

He kept his mouth shut as he watched the stag not quite sure what he should do. Perking he gave a nod, "Oh yes--" Again, his answer was intervened by the other which made him look back at the dragon.

His tone was icy as he spoke, though his features remained neutral and posture straight. "Excuse me. I don't understand why you insist on this bullying, but you could just leave us be. We did nothing to you, and you have no right to be saying such rude and demeaning things. And just so you know, we were having a conversation (a general one) which did not include you in any way." And the dragon thought Calhoun was paranoid...

Calhoun looked rather surprised when the squirrel had started to speak to Roku, though it was quickly followed by a pang of fear. He didn't know how the dragon was going to react to it, and he didn't want the squirrel to be the focus of any of his wrath. "Nicea, I don't think--" he started, waving a hand quickly as distraction but falling short.

Roku's eyes flashed as he glanced toward the dark squirrel sitting next to Calhoun before a smirk found it's way to his face. Well, wasn't this interesting... "I have no right, you say? And how long have you known Cal, all of about five minutes? You make it sound like I do this out of the blue." He took another bite of his sandwich, rather amused with the situation.

Well, you do do these things out of the blue... Calhoun thought with a grimace, but keeping his thoughts on the matter to himself. He was highly uncomfortable with the arguing that was going on, but Roku was pushing it to the point of it being the only way to get through to the dragon.

However, now Nicea was in the middle of a long-running war, and that didn't sit well with the stag-hybrid. Nicea had done nothing to warrant such negative behavior, and now that the squirrel had voiced his opinion on the matter, Cal knew that would only put Roku's focus on him. That is, if Calhoun didn't do something to distract the dragon.

"Roku, will you just bug off? If you weren't spoken to directly, you shouldn't be interjecting into a conversation at all," he growled, getting annoyed by this point.

Another snort came from the dragon, as if he were trying to hold in a demeaning laugh. "What are you all of a sudden, my mother? So-rry, I didn't realize I was talking to your boyfriend." He turned to leave back into the kitchen, deciding something to drink sounded pretty good at this point. Before he disappeared completely, however, he muttered a quiet, "An uke standing up for a seme... now I've seen everything."

Calhoun's eyes went wide, silent for a moment before growling in frustration. "Gah, he is so immature!" he grumbled, pulling the brim of his hat to cover his eyes, and the embarrassed blush that followed suit.

Nicea bristled a bit at the last comment but kept his mouth closed, merely frowning. He was tempted to make a face at the dragon's back, but refused to stoop so low. Taking a deep breath he closed his eyes and tried to settle himself, but that damn dragon!

Normally the squirrel wasn't all that excitable. Clearing his throat he glanced at Calhoun as he finally spoke, seeing the other tug at his hat. Leaning over he glanced at the kitchen as he murmured, "We could go somewhere else..." That was, if the other still cared to be social with him...

His ears went back, pausing a moment. Was he insinuating too much? He quickly added, "That is... if... if you wanted..." He looked down at his hands fidgeting a little... Awkward!

Calhoun opted to sit the way he was for a little while in silence, hand still gripped tightly on the brim of his hat to cover any emotion that crossed his face. The one time the stag actually decided to get some fresh air away from the 'complex, and he just had to run into Roku. Well, I suppose it's an inevitable annoyance in life at this point... he sighed to himself, relaxing and releasing his grip on his hat with a smirk at the irony.

He turned to Nicea seated next to him as the squirrel started to speak, and stole a glance behind the chair toward the kitchen as well. After a brief pause, ears perked forward to catch any sound that may have come from the kitchen, Cal responded with a whisper, "Yeah, quick, before he comes back." Seems he still had a little sense of humor, even after enduring the torture that was verbal abuse.

He smiled at the pink-haired hybrid, trying to show him that Cal was unperturbed by whatever Nicea was worried he had been implying. He grabbed hold of Nicea's nearest hand and, hunched over as if trying to hide behind the bulk of the couch, snuck off toward the door with the squirrel-hybrid in tow. He pressed an index finger to his lips as he turned his head sideways, an indication to try to be quick and quiet, before turning back to the front. He reached for the doorknob and attempted to turn it without making noise, sliding it open slowly before releasing Nicea's hand and motioning him to hurry on through. Cal was going to have a slightly more difficult time fitting through a narrow opening in the door, what with his branching antlers and all, but he'd follow suit quickly behind the squirrel, whether or not Roku said anything.

Quickly shutting the door behind himself, he breathed an audible sigh of relief. "I don't think he saw us leave, do you?" he asked, a goofy grin finding it's way to his features. He had his hand gripped on the doorknob still, just in case.

Nicea's ears perked and blinked, making sure grab hold of his book as his hand was taken a hold of. Ears perked, he stole another glance to the kitchen before crouching down with Cal. Sneaky ~

He couldnt help but stifle a small snicker before following almost silently. The squirrel was rather small actually, so he had no problem slipping through the door right before Cal, now unable to hold back the grin that was evident on his face. Turning around once outside he waited for Cal to shut the door before he snickered, "No ~ Im sure he had no idea. He'll probably be curious where he went." The stag's grin was contagious and had found its way to Nicea's face.

He looked at the book in his hands then blinked, ears perking. "My coat!" Thank goodness it was just inside the door on the coat rack. He was almost instantly reminded why he had been inside when the cold seemed to become apparent to him.
