"Where? Where?" Garrett tosses away all shreds of patience and jitters with boiling excitement, trying, too, to see around the towers of legs and mountains of shopping bags. Being pretty much the same height as his companion, he sees not much else than the aforementioned.
He doesn't notice that his wing has calmed - ironic, considering its owner's current state - almost as if it had listened to Kirra's soothing assurance.
Garrett nibbles on his sleeve anxiously, standing at Kirra's shoulder. "D'you see anythin', mm? We almost there?"

"Through here!" Kirra points, but the line has shuffled around already, and the gap is blocked. She counts legs under her breath, trying to judge the remaining distance.
"One, two. Three, four... Five... Six..."
And then Mummy's legs. And a green leg - with a funny shoe!
"A elf!" she exclaims, springing up again and catching at Garrett's hand, eyes saucer-wide. She opens her mouth to add something else, but then the line evaporates before them as the family of three moves ahead to pose, and her first unobstructed view of Santa leaves her speechless.

Garrett watches, just as speechless as his companion, as the fat man in red is revealed to him. From down here at his height, he looks so much more mighty and magical. Without peeling his eyes from Santa, he lightly clasps Kirra's upper arm, partly in his own awe, but also partly in a sudden bout of fear in it finally being their turn.
"Wowy," he murmurs as the family of three is instructed to smile as a flash goes off.

Kirra nods awed agreement, staring up at the mountain of red and white. It's not like the picture books at all. Santa is awfully fuzzy in person. Furry clothes, furry hat, furry face. Kirra wonders if he's as soft as their cats at home.
Then the family ahead of them begins to move away, and the fabled lap of Santa is empty.
"Eeee!" Kirra squeaks, snapping out of her daze. "Now us, now us!" She turns to Garrett with a little bounce, eyes shining with excitement as the elf beckons them over to Santa's Throne.

Garrett's piercing golden eyes widen and he gasps softly, his mouth dropping open into a slight gape at his friend. Certainly not wanting to keep Santa waiting, he doesn't wait for the elf to beckon twice before slipping his hand into Kirra's and starting up the slight platform toward Santa.

Kirra holds onto Garrett's hand tightly as they approach. After all the waiting, it suddenly seems so close and so big, and just a little bit scary.
She giggles nervously, and runs the last little way, patting her free hand over the edge of Santa's coat, all velvety red and fluff white. It's soft, and reassured, she gives Garrett a huge grin and turns her face upwards, lifting her arms for Santa to pick them up.

"HO HO HO!" Santa laughs, holding his protruding stomach comically.
Garrett draws back in surprise, and the feathers on his wings ruffle out every which way. He stumbles back one step before walking directly into the knees of the helper elf, who scoops him up and drops him into Santa's lap. She does the same for Kirra, then hands each a candycane from a little woven basket.
The big voice of Santa rumbles again. "And what are your names, good little girl and boy?"

For a moment, Kirra thinks Garrett has taken flight, before the helper elf lifts her up to sit beside him. She flaps her own wings a little to keep her balance on her new perch, but Santa's lap is so big and soft that she doesn't really need to.
"'M Kirra!" she announces happily. "You're in my books. Do you got a reindeer? I got a stripe! Stripe!” She waves the stripy candycane like a magic wand. Santa leans away from her slightly at the last piercing shriek. Ooops, too loud? Well, Santa was loud first.
"This is my friend," she adds, and nudges Garrett with her wing to introduce himself. Both her hands are too busy with the candy, trying to work out how the wrapper comes off.

Garrett has stuck the candycane into his mouth to try and gnaw off the thicker corner of the wrapper. At the nudge, he jolts up in a stunned, wide eyed glance that gives him a sort of feral look of a real hawk gnawing on a little mouse. With the candycane dangling from his mouth he shoots out a hand at Santa and decides better of it, instead patting the man's arm awkwardly.
"M' Garwett," he says between his teeth with a forgiving smile. Santa takes a moment to recover, between the flurry of activity from the two bird toddlers, before roaring another of his famous HO HO HO's.
"Well, Kirra, Garrett, what can I get you for Christmas this year?" he asks under common courtesy laws of Santa Claus.

The question takes Kirra by surprise. It's been a very long day of shopping, and so very full of things that Santa might bring if she's very good. And now, out of all that shiny, Santa wants her to choose? Right now?
"Ummmm… Uhhh… 'nother stripy?" she wonders, still struggling with the candycane wrapper. Maybe Garrett has the right idea teething it. "An' a book - with birds," she adds, thinking hard. "An' a reindeer like yours, an' a teddy an… An' a paints! All colours! Please!"
Suddenly shy, she sticks the candy back in her mouth, and finds a tiny tear in the wrapping, the exposed spot sticky sweet and nectarish against the smooth plastic. She sets to work licking at the elusive treat.

Santa lets out a roaring ho-ho-ho and pats Kirra gently on the head with one of his gloved hands. "You're such a very good little girl, Kirra! I bet when you wake up on Christmas morning, you'll find that I've brought you lots of the things you wanted."
Garrett watches with wide eyes, now stuck between feral and absolutely adorable upon chewing the plastic off his candycane. A chunk gives away, and he peels at it with now sticky fingers.
There's a shift underneath him, and he looks up to find Santa looking at him expectantly. "And what about you, little Garrett? What can I bring you on Christmas morning?"
The bird boy squirms thoughtfully while sucking on the exposed candy. He pops the sweet out of his mouth just long enough to mumble, "A truck and a puppy and a wings that make me fly."
A helper elf skips over and adjusts how and where Garrett is seated on Santa's lap, as all his squirming has almost landed him off the grand man's knee. Between this motion and the unexpected roar of laughter from Santa, Garrett looks very perplexed. He reaches over and grabs Kirra's hand for comfort, still wide eyed as before.
The helper elf squeezes a squeaky toy at the direction of the camera. "Look here, everyone! And smile big for your picture with Santa!"

“Flying wings?” Kirra asks, squeezing Garrett’s hand when he grabs hers. His wings must be really mean to him if he wants different ones. Well, Santa can bring anything if you’re good, and they both have been, and haven’t screamed or made a mess or anything…
She looks around at the squeaking noise, turning a blissful smile towards the noisy toy, and leaning closer to Garrett.
The flash is unexpected, and she blinks furiously, rubbing at her eyes with a sticky finger.

Garrett nods solemnly in response to Kirra's question which happens to be the exact moment that the flash goes off. His first picture with Santa, partly ruined by his disdain for his uncooperative wings! A piece of candycane breaks off into his mouth, and with quick reflexes he catches the rest as it falls free.
"Now you two be good, and go to sleep early on Christmas eve, so I can come visit and bring you two gifts!" Santa cheekily notes, giving each a dismissive pat on the back. Two helper elves come to each lift a child off Santa's lap, and another hands them both a copy of the photo.

"We will, Santa!" Kirra cheers, waving as the elves remove her from her perch. She loses hold of Garrett's hand in the flurry of helpers, but gains a photo instead. There they are, all small and smiley. She turns it over in her less-candified hand, holding it up to compare against the real Garrett and Santa.
"Look, it's us!" she says, waving the picture at Garrett. Seeing Garrett has one too, she holds hers out next to his. "Now there’s lots of us!" Kirra sticks her candy-cane back in her mouth and offers her hand to Garrett again as the last helper elf ushers them back to their waiting parents.
"'UMMY! 'ummy, dj'you see?" she calls indistinctly around the candy. "Lookit me an' Garrett an' Santa! Santa's nice!"
"Yes, we saw," Loki agrees, gently taking Kirra's photo from the excitable toddler before it becomes irreparably candy-caned, and offering an apologetic smile to the other mother.
