02 // Xinai
____05.01.2008 // TWO? But There Was Only One Egg...

Leaning back in her chair, Xinai stretched her arms above her neck in a futile attempt to relieve a little of the tension that had worked itself into her neck and shoulders as she hunched over her desktop computer. Her classes had barely started again, and yet she was already swamped with homework. The professors at her art college seemed to take some sort of devilish glee in watching their students turn up for classes hollow-eyed and brain dead, telling them that the real world would be no better. Xai huffed out a breath in mild amusement at the thought - at least in the real world they would get paid.

As she rolled her head around her shoulders to further stretch out the muscles, her eyes fell on the laptop sitting quietly to the side. It was on, but she currently wasn't using it for anything special. Even so, there was activity on the screen - at the moment, there was a rather large egg floating around on the desktop area. As she watched, the egg came to a lazy stop near the bottom, and gave an inquiring beep through the speakers that she'd attached to it a couple of days ago.

Tilting her head, Xinai smiled and reached out a finger to poke the area of the screen that the egg rested in. "Don't you ever get bored, floating around like that?"

The responding beep from the laptop sounded slightly smug, and Xai raised an eyebrow before speaking again, her thoughts thoroughly diverted from the art project that she'd been working on moments before. "Do you know something I don't?"

She really hadn't expected much of an answer other than another smug beep from the laptop. The Hacker egg, however, had other plans in mind. Giving a shrill, attention-grabbing beep, it started to bounce around quickly within the confines of the screen, the movements frenzied and chaotic. Eyes wide, Xai watched in stunned fascination as the egg's speed continued to pick up, until it was almost a blur.

Once again reaching out, Xinai's hand was almost to the screen when abruptly, all movement stopped and the egg reappeared as a solid image. Frowning a little in confusion, Xai opened her mouth to ask, "Wha..?-"

With another shrill beep, the egg suddenly cracked and exploded, scattering fragments of the shell everywhere on the display. Xai gasped in astonishment as she stared at the screen. Sitting in its place were two child Hackers, facing her with satisfied smiles on their faces. As she looked on, her mind a complete blank in surprise, a small speech bubble appeared above the twin Hackers.

< Wasn't expecting two of us? > The comment was accompanied by a soft, amused beep.

The noise jolted Xinai out of her stunned state. With an abrupt shake of her head, she gave a rueful laugh. "Naomi didn't say..- No, I definitely wasn't. How did you both manage to fit into the same egg?" Xinai eyed the two child Hackers as she spoke. They were differently colored, one a pale yellow-green, and the other a pale blue. Well, she thought to herself, at least i'll be able to tell them apart.

< We are data. The area inside the egg could be as big as needed; there are no limits except the ones that the computer imposes. >

The answer, delivered with such detachedness, brought a grin to Xai's face. The tone was completely different from the first comment, and Xinai realized that the two Hacker children already had quite well-developed personalities. This, she decided, was going to be so much fun. And it hadn't even started yet. Just as she was about to open her mouth to speak, the laptop beeped again, and the speech bubble flashed with a series of messages.

< Why are you..- >
< I can smile too! Look: =) >

The grin that was already slowly becoming wider burst into a laugh as Xinai read the text on the screen. For all that her new charges had developed personalities, they were still very much the children that Naomi had said they would be. Catching her breath, Xai stroked a finger over the screen in a soft petting motion.

"I'm smiling because I'm glad that you are here. I promise I'll try to take really good care of the pair of you, although you'll have to bear with me as I try to learn the basics. Do you two have names?"

The two Hackers moved slowly around the area where her finger was currently petting, the laptop emitting a quiet, contented beep as the speech bubble filled with a new message.

< I've decided to be Rioke. I'm the blue one, in case you hadn't realized. > To emphasize the point, Rioke bounced slightly up and down, waving a small arm to catch Xai's attention.

< Call me Kiore..- > The yellow-green hacker moved shyly, hiding her body behind Rioke as she spoke. Kiore was shy and nervous, rather afraid that Xinai would be disappointed in them and break her promise. Needing reassurance, she twined her tail around Rioke's, drawing comfort from her sister.

Catching her sister's nervousness, Rioke jumped in. < We're really easy to take care of, so no worries! > Deciding that Xai had had enough to digest for the day, Rioke's quick mind came to the perfect solution with an almost audible 'click'. < Don't you have homework to do or something? We can amuse ourselves just fine. >

With that, Rioke dissappeared, dragging Kiore with her.

Xai sat there, blinking at the screen for a few moments before moving back to her desktop PC, a slight smile playing with her lips. She was not particularly surprised to see a miniature speech bubble hovering over her art project on the desktop, indicating that the twins had moved into her desktop computer, but as all it displayed was a cheery
< =)!! >, she ignored it as she got back to work. Rioke and Kiore were certainly going to be a handful as they grew up, but she was looking forward to it.
