Gladly, it's never happened to me. My parents always ask me "how do you say this in Arabic / German / Japanese" (when I was studying the later two). I don't recall getting any negative responses for studying a language, it's pretty silly to get mad at someone for something like that. :/

I don't think my mom likes that I'm learning Japanese because I wanna move there eventually. >.<

I generally get people frustrated because often, when I'm talking, some Japanese will slip out instead of English (which confuses a lot of my friends because they don't speak any other language other than English) but they are pretty cool with it, because they know that I want to be an interpreter one day and that I am used to speaking Japanese/English at uni, so it's hard to suddenly change into just English.

....I do have one friend though who sometimes chastises me for speaking in Japanese all the time. Which is weird, because he studies it too! sweatdrop I find speaking the language the easiest way to learn, and it's now at the point where my first reaction will be to speak in Japanese and not English, it does frustrate people.

The only people who don't mind are my Japanese friends and my boyfriend, who is also Japanese (although he feels bad because he feels that he is responsible for me trying so hard to speak Japanese, because sometimes I have problems understanding his English. xd )

To make matters worse, I have no picked up a fairly strong Osaka accent from two friends of mine. One of my mates thought it was terrific that I could speak Osaka-ben (Osaka dialect) and was really proud of me! So that comforts me.

I have experienced opposition against me learning Indonesian though. Every time I say I'm learning it, I'm met with 'Why learn a dumb language like that???It's so horrible sounding, and Indonesia's nothing but full of terrorists! Don't waste your time!'' ....which makes me want to slap them, hard. Indonesia is NOT full of terrorists, I have Indonesian friends and they are some of the nicest people you could meet. And Indonesian may sound harsh to some people's ears, but I love the sound of it. heart

I've never experienced that kind of a problem before...My family respects what I want to do and learn and no one starts to tell me to stop learning a language. They're rather happy that I am,and so am I. xp

No one has ever really strongly disapproved of learning a new language. My mom would occasionally try to dissuade me from learning any language that I probably won't use...still it's interesting to know stuff.

I've gotten mixed reviews on my learning spanish. My mom asks me what words are in spanish. That makes for a fun car ride. My daddy doesn't usually care. In fact one of his friends who knows spanish came over and I got to dazzle company with my spanish. Strangely though when my sister and I speak spanish to eachother he tells us to "talk right." He wants us to get A's in spanish but how can we learn the language if we don't speak it for a whole summer. If he hadn't socially crippled us mabe we'd have other friends to speak spanish with.

My brother can't stand my language-nerdiness. He's on the anti-Spanish bandwagon. In fact he pretty much said I shouldn't care about any other language besides English. Me and my sister were looking at a Japanese movie on DVD and he was in his room. The dubbing was so awful we couldn't take it anymore and switched it to Japanese with English subtitles and he got mad. This has also happened with Chinese movie. His excuse was he didn't feel like reading, and he doesn't want to listen to other languages because that's not what he grew up listening to.

No one in my family opposes my language-nerdiness. Though my Spanish-speaking friend Andrés does appear a little uncomfortable when I try to speak with him in Spanish, he seems to prefer English.

And my friend Reix and I have a sort of on-going Romance language battle - he took French in high school while I took Spanish, so we sometimes have little word-wars:

"Well 'two' in French is 'deux', and that sounds better than 'dos'!"

"Well 'liar' in Spanish is 'mentiroso', and that sounds dos times better than 'menteur'!"

It's not really for learning a lanuguage, but my dad always gets pissed off if I let an occasional German word out. Like I say "Guten Morgen" and he'll slap me. I mean the language is native to me and I'm getting slapped for it. What the hell??

No one's got mad at me so to speak, but most people find it a bit weird that I like at least trying to speak to people in their own language. Before I travel somewhere that doesn't speak English as their first language, I like to learn some basic phrases. Most people I know just seem to expect everyone to learn English. Last year my mum got a bit annoyed when we were in Spain and I kept saying 'gracias' to the people in the shops who served us.. Just stuff like that really. No one gets extremely annoyed by me.

My dad had been trying to get me to learn Spanish since I was little (not for any particularly interesting reason, he just thought it would be useful. I didn't really pick it up well though I know a lot of words. I guess I just couldn't understand all the grammar stuff in the Spanish books we had. XD Then he got mad when I expressed an interest in French, which I ultimately didn't try to learn...and now I'm learning Japanese. My mom knows and doesn't mind so long as I try to limit my excessive mentioning of it around her, but I try really hard to not even really remind my dad I'm learning it because if he thought French was useless...>_>;;

My parents think that if anyone is in the USA, they should speak at lest enough English to hold a decent conversation, regardless if they are living here or visiting. But they don't think that they should have to learn the language of the country they are visiting, although they don't actually like leaving the country.

They don't really hate it that I like other languages, they just think its usless and they think I'm crazy for not just sticking with Spanish, maybe Chinese. They don't really think I should learn Japanese or anything else...My brother thinks I'm weird too, but he doesn't really care either way.

My friend, however, are totally okay with it. Basically, I was learning Spanish, and others were learning German or French at school. I also had a friend who could speak Mandarin Chinese, and another who was learning Japanese, and we would all speak in different languages to confuse the others, so we sort picked up alot of different phrases in different langages (which I have pretty much forgotten now). And none of my friends minded when one of my friends would say a sentence composed of at least 4 different languages, because we all understood what she was saying...
