My personal rule is "If it's a gift, I shall use it"
But I won't buy anything made of leather either way. And I don't use leather gifts for my children, only myself.

I won't buy secondhand leather/wool/fur or accept it as a gift. I've donated my old animal products when I could afford to buy new vegan ones to replace them.
I wouldn't eat meat or dairy or eggs if they were a gift. I wouldn't buy non-vegan food products from a second-hand store (if food could be bought at a second-hand store.)
I'm not going to wear animal products, regardless of how I got them. Buying something from a thrift store or using something because it was a present doesn't make it any less unethical.

ChaoticConsonance Mortification You seem like the type of person to look for conflict at every corner....... I swear I'm not. All I mean by that is that moral right is not determined by majority rule. I agree with you on this. Its how far you take it really.

See, buying things like that has different levels for me. As ashamed as I am to admit it, I sometimes need to buy new items out of leather and wool. I am a Scottish Highland dancer, and our regulation dance shoes are made of leather, and there are no alternatives allowed. Same for the kilts. They are made out of wool, and there's no way of getting around that. And my college percussion education sometimes requires me to buy drums with skin heads, and I feel really guilty about it. It is only out of neccessity that I buy those things, and I take really good care of them so I can avoid buying any more. Whenever I have a choice, I make sure to buy the non-skin heads, though. After all, not only as a vegetarian, but as a musician, I like them better, for their durability and better consistancy of sound that synthetic heads produce. But otherwise, I avoid getting anything leather, even if it is second-hand. Only when it comes to essential items, like winter boots, will I buy something leather, only if it is second-hand. But an occassion like that is rare indeed, since I take very good care of my things. But I will never ever buy fur items. Never.

I find it much better, though I would never buy any. I would not refuse it if it was a gift, though most likely not really use it. There is also the fact that leather is a byproduct of the meatpacking industry, it would go to waste otherwise. I am not saying this is good, but it is better than it going to waste. It would be better if the whole industry did less, as it would improve health and kill less. It depends. I have less of a problem with it, though it's not for me.
