my take is simply this: practicing your excercises and getting a better and better feel for you guitar consistantly, naturally makes you play faster. some things that guitarist do today is JUST focus on speed and when actually playing with drums is that they find out that speed is nothing if you can't keep a steady click. but when you can play with a sense of pulse no matter what then speed can only make you better. rolleyes

if u want to play fast you have to play fast and be clean at the same time. you should just practice and do some speed excercises and scales. start slow and get faster. also, try doing all of that in time, or on beat with a metronome if u have one. and yea.

Take my band-mate Ryan and I for instance.
I prefer to play with feeling, regardless of speed. He prefers to play as quickly as he possibly can. It sounds good, but it's bland, and lacks the "feeling" that I prefer to hear.
As long as it's comfortable for you to play, and you can make it sound good at any speed, there's nothing wrong.

We harmonize riffs throughout songs, one keeping to rhythm, the other takes a solo, and switch.

i'd say speed is a perk. i mean, you can play a simply amazing rhythm or solo without much speed at all. however, if you can pick up more speed through the years, it's nice to incorporate into everything every once in a while.

I Wish I Could Be The One...
Speeds a lot more fun to me =3 But, with too much speed [Dragonforce] it might sound bad. Seriously, Dragonforce's guitarists may have speed, but damn, it's TOO fast. [in my opinion.]

Speed is important to me. Just cause I like to play Metal. It all depends on what your playing. Speed may not be important in come cases but timing is the priority. Timing is what matters.

Playing fast just makes you seem better. Like Herman Li. He's not all that good, but he plays super fast, so people are like "Holy s**t! O_O"

Speed has nothing to do with good guitar playing. Look at guys like Carlos Santana, or Chet Atkins. Neither of which were shredders by any means, but they are considered to be two of the greatest guitarists of all time. True, they could probably both play really fast if they wanted to, but the fact is that they don't. Style is what matters, not speed. If speed is your style though, then go for it, but you don't need it to be good.

Being fast just makes it so people who don't play the guitar think that you're good. People like Herman Li and Malmsteen are fast, but as far as technique and originality go neither are all that great.
Clapton is God, and Clapton's not really that fast.

Malmsteen pretty much revolutionized the Neo-classical style. He is actually a very good guitarist, and incorporates alot of scales and feeling into his "arpegiated" shed fits. Herman Li... I could take it or leave it. But Malmsteen is a guitar legend like it or not. And yes, Clapton IS god.

But in my personal opinion climbing up and down scales and throwing in the occasional pitch harmonic does not make you revolutionary nor the deity that people make him out to be. That he is. 3nodding
