Though she couldn't see it, the stallion grinned broadly. He liked the little mare. Perhaps she would help bring back the optimism that had been fading from him for the last few years. Try as he might, whenever he wandered around, all he saw was destruction and other negative things. It was hard to keep faith that there was good in the world. Perhaps there was a reason they were fated to meet this day afterall.
"I couldn't agree with you more," he replied before pondering her question. "My name is River," he started before pausing, "as you already know, but I have that name because that's where I was found as a foal. I do not know who my parents were or what happened to them. I can only guess that I was checking out the river and had fallen in. I don't know how far I travelled down that river but from what I was told, I was found barely alive. I was cold and sick for a long time. An old mare had taken me under her wing, quite literally, and nursed me back to health."
River paused to look up at the sky to estimate how much time was left in the day, "She passed along shortly after I had become an adult. She raised me well, told me that there was a reason I survived the wrath of the river. You can guess how I got my name. She taught me to judge with my heart, not with my mind and to try to find good in all things. She helped me get over the darkness of my situation and find love and happiness. I've tried to stick true to what I learned from her."
The stallion smiled again as memories flooded his head. While he sometimes wondered what had happened to his mother and father, if they were still alive, he was thankful for the life he had lived here. "What about you, Theia? Can you tell me more about yourself?"

-Several days later-
Over the next few days, Theia traveled with the two kittens and the stallion, enjoying the company immensely. Talking about each other, exchanging stories, laughing. It was likely the best time she'd had in a very long time. As they got to be closer friends, her little spot on River's back had been gradually moved up onto his head where she rested quite comfortably. It was easier to talk to the stallion from a perch on his head, rather than his back, anyway.
The tears in her wings had started to knit themselves together, and though she was enjoying using River as a camel, she felt the itching to fly and get out of her small form. To move. To do something and it was that wanderlust that had brought her to broach the subject.
"River?" She murmured softly against his ear, "Can we stop? I think I'm strong enough to shift into my larger form. Not enough to fly, yet, I don't think, but I've been itching to do something. Besides, I somehow think a mare walking beside you would be better company than one using your head as her bed."

River came to a gentle pause. "Are you sure, Theia?," he asked. "Well, of course you are, or you wouldn't have asked in the first place," he added with a laugh. Perhaps a part of him had grown so accustomed to his traveling companion that he wasn't particularly keen on losing her. Another part of him was interested to see this shifting in size. They had talked about it off and on since they had met and it would be fun to see. It wasn't often that he got to look at her lately since she was always on his head.
"Ok, prepare yourself, Theia, I'm going to attempt to lower you to the ground the best I can." The stallion lowered himself to his knees, which was a little bit awkward for him as he spent most of his time standing. When he was comfortable enough, he bowed his head slowly until his nose touched the ground. The kittens were whispering to one another in excitement, clearly aware of what was going to take place. They had been waiting for this moment ever since they had met the little mare.
