In LOTR some of the elves were singing. It's in the background though.

If someone says Elvish, I usually think more Celtic than anything. The Renaissance dresses yes, but it's more Celtic. *shrugs* Maybe it's just me.

I enjoy all sorts of music but I cannot stand country or "emo" because it's too whiny.

Elven music is usually personified in celtic music. But it is alos played equally successfully on piano, flute, lute, violin, and vocally. I could even go on a stretch and say that a flugelhorn or french horn would make an excellent elven horn.
On a side note. I've heard that a band is playing a genre of metal called "fantasy metal". It apparently has some Elven words in some of the lyrics. Wierd huh?

I think of Elven music as very earthy or watery sounding.
Songs by Loreena McKennitt and some by Enya make me think of elves.
Also, there is a Japanese composer, Yoko Kanno, who has created songs with a bit of an elven flair to them (such as "Kiseki No Umi" and "Inner Universe).

Well it kinda depends on what kind of elf are u. I really like all sorts of music, but I think celtic instruments are elven instruments. I really like and play irish tin whistle and flute and they both sound very elven.
And, as I know, elves are supposed to sing pretty well if they do heart

I know exactly what you guys mean about Celtic music seeming to fall in with Elvish. Irish, more than Scottish. The Scots have a bit rougher brogue, less soft edges to their language than the Irish. Probably the Norse influence. They always reminded me more of Dwarves than elves.
At any rate, here's the full version to the Passing of the Elves, that someone mentioned being sung in the background of the FotR movie. Gotta love people with way too much time on their hands, and access to YouTube.

I also have it on my Gaia profile, complete with Sindarin and English lyrics, if anyone's interested. It's easily my favorite song of all time.
