I disagree, Eragon's bad traits are what make the story bad, he's a whiny little kid who can't even wield a sword nor does he take learning how to wield one seriously.

You miss my point yet again, I'm wondering what the book would be like stark without Eragon in it. Granted, Eragon is a key factor for his whole family dying, so without that the story really goes no where as the old dragon rider has no interest in saving the world, nor does Eragon's cousin, believe it was his cousin, if not, brother then. That leaves all of the goofy looking movie dwarves and far too human elves to wage their non-existent secret war against the evil king *insert overly masculine bad guy name here*.

If the book was written by a different author... it might in fact be saveable, I might in fact be able to read the entire thing.

To me, the book is hash-tastic, hash-baked, and hash thought out. and by hash, I do wish to make reference to potatoes, because in my eyes, this book is in fact: POTATOES. Hey Varos, we should come up with a yearly POTATOES award for the bad books we've read.

You've convinced me. I now absolutely believe that Eragon is a bad character, and the whole story is bad. I don't hate the book though. In fact, I still really enjoy it. I just think it's a bad story now.

Umm...I think I must have missed something (sarcasm, maybe?)...you don't think Eragon is a good character, or that the books hold literary merit, but...you still like it? This is the part where I come in and say, "Look past what you want to feel to what you truly feel".

And sure, let's make it Leavy-Kun and Lion-Kun's Spam and Spuds Award!

wow guys, now sympathy here in this topic xp eragon and eldest are definitely not the best books i have ever read, but they are also not the worst. yes, eragon is rather whiny in the books, but if you think about it, it makes his character a little more believable and easier to relate to. if he was perfect then it would be completely boring. yes, i can see how the story line is a bit, er, unoriginal, but i think it is the fact that is was written, or at least started, while paolini was a kid that appeals to so many people. i myself enjoy to write stories, but i did not have any hope of getting them published for years to come because of what i saw as the "age-barrier." eragon, despite it's quatlity, gave me hope.

honestly, i don't understand what the whole big deal was about it, there are better books that deserve the publicity more, but the media is picky. now, my friends, with deep breaths and open minds, wink we will survive the paolini surge.

To what is said about Eragon, it's kind of like Belgarion from the Belgariad and Mallorean by David Eddings. Belgarion has those same traits. He was whiny, couldn't use magic that well, could barely use a sword. But, in the end, after everything, all those bad traits is what made him great. He over came them, and became who he was. In that since, he was Garion, and became Belgarion. Although, in this very sense, it frustrates me, because it is almost taken directly from that. It may not be, but since I have read The Belgariad and Mallorean, it is always nagging in the back of my head.

I think I am the most quoted member of this guild, look anywhere you like, I've said SOMETHING that someone just doesn't like enough to refer back to.

In any case, I've never heard of your aforementioned series, Sacred, and if they in fact are the pool's surface to Eragon's reflection to the extent that you have said I will hardly be making any attempt to read them. Eragon's character pains me because his only contribution that I could ever see in the plot of the first book was that Saphira chose him as his rider and thus started Hell freezing over. His uselessness only becomes more apparent as he almost refutes the teachings of Brom, was that his name?

I don't think I shall continue debating this book, simply put, I hate Eragon for being a useless insufferable character, I hate the books for being tediously boring to read. I want to hate Poalini too for writing such tripe, but I will excuse him this time as he is in his Trial and Error stages of writing, it just so happens that he was published before anyone could refine his talents.

Actually, Eddings was once as popular as Tolkien, and many authors were inspired by his numerous series, including The Belgariad, perhaps his most popular of all.

griliras, from the bottom of my heart as a used-to-be eragon fanatic i will say if you think that series is really a peice of art and should be put on display for all to look upon and then boo at its plotting and characters then be my guest but if you would really like to start to read some good writing i would look beyond the now near horizon for you and get some other reading in besides that crap that is even now being called a work of art to those oblivious to the world of fantasy and reading.

i say these words with a thought of pity for the next soul to pick up the book and say it is good writing. my 6 year old brother could come up with a better plot and better characters.

I do have to say that yes I agree with Sacred when she says that Eragon is very reminicent of Belgarion and Brom is definatly a less cranky Belgarath. The one big difference is that I think Eragon is not going to resolve as well as Belgarion did and grow up as well. Paolini does have some very small miniscule talent, but not enough to pull off such a weakness into strength development. We can all just hope that in some of the time that Paolini is taking in getting the next book out he will have read some Eddings, L'Engle (God rest her soul), MZB, McCaffery's Pern books, and Lackey's Valdemar books

Yes. I usually state older gen author's because I have been reading my mom's 700-some odd Sci-fi book collection since I was in the 7th grade. Sorry about that.
