Isnt Kagome's time in like 1991? Theres no such thing as demons there, I think they think its just a myth or something with demons. I cant say for sure though (her grandpa is way into old legends)
Nope, it's sometime around 1997. If the very concept of youkai were merely a myth in the Inuyasha universe, then how is it that Kagome has to fight them all and fell in love with a hanyou?

Considering that a lot of youkai stemmed from the despair, pain, and most of the negative feelings from a human, that is probably what fuels to their strength--Kaede or someone mentioned it in the manga but I can't be bothered to flip through 530+ chapters. When the humans' lives began getting better and better, I'm surmising that they eventually began to weaken and slowly die off (extinction).
I too pondered on this question for quite a long time. Seeing that there are so many youkai, I found it nearly impossible for all that youkai to die out in a span of merely 100 years. So my best guess would be that there might have been some huge war that broke out between humans and youkai not too long after the Naraku debacle.
