"Leolin is the only one who can feed them." Laura said with a sheepish smile. "I tried, and Leolin took the food from me to give to his chicks himself." Though it was sweet, Laura still wanted to keep all her fingers in tack.

After having woken up from a nap, even the sweetest chick was a bit fussy afterwards. Giving one last hiss at her sibling, Bree moved to the darkness of the other end of the basket in hopes of getting back to sleep. Normaly she wouldn't hiss at others, and was more than happy to play along with Jade and their other sibling. Just.... not after being rudely awakened.

"Why, do they seem hungry to you?" Laura asked, glancing back at Kalvin as they neared the resting place under one of the larger oak trees where the pair would have plenty shade no matter the hour, and the chicks could play without worry of heat stroke.

Jade watched his sister sulk under the lid and suddenly felt concerned. He hoped daddy hadn’t been watching, he might get in trouble. Still, he hoped Bree wouldn’t start a fight. He started to crawl under the lid when he noticed his surroundings had changed. He peeped excitedly as he looked around.

Kalvin hoped he hadn’t hurt Bree’s feelings. He couldn’t help that Jade hogged all his attention; he wanted to be friends with Bree too. Maybe he would get to know them better once they were all on the ground.

Did they seem hungry to him? Kalvin bit his lip. “I don’t know, I guess. Jade was nibbling at me but the other one, she’s just fussing.”

Leolin stopped with Laura's direction to do so, and looked back at the lad on his back. He didn't seem concern about how the chicks had been behaving, though did want to get the little ones out of the basket and on the grass so he could play with them.

With a warm smile, Laura reached to take the basket from Kalvin so the lad could get off Leolin's back. "All right you, c'mere." She murmured to little Jade as she bought the basket to her chest. Carefully kneeling to the grass, she lifted little Jade out of the basket and onto the grass before beginning to lift the other basket flap to see about waking the sleepy-head.

The soft pillow that was placed in the basket made quite a nice bed. The cutest sight of all was seeing there curled up in a ball. When warm hands wrapped around her belly, Bree chirped and began to wiggle. Noo! She wanted to go back to the warm box!

"Bree! Breeeee!!" The little girl screamed, and was put next to her brother in the grass. So much for continuing her nap... Fluffing up, the little girl pouted at everyone.

Still not used to being picked up, Jade wriggled and chirped in Lucas’s arms until she put him down. He stumbled uncomfortably on the grass at first, unsure of his surroundings. After a few seconds started to run in circles and jump around, testing the new stuff under his feet. The grass was much more springy than the hay in the stables and a lot more fun to run around on.

Kalvin climbed off Leolin’s back, smiling as he watched the chicks play.

Unfortunately for Kalvin, Leolin was moving towards his chicks at the time the lad was getting off and he didn't seem keen on stopping for the lad's sake. He chuckled at the bouncy little boy getting used to the grass and gave him a nudge with his beak as if to tag him.

Tail flicking back and forth, the griffin crouched to jump should Jade try to tag back.

Laughing softly, Laura stepped up to take the satchel from around Leolin's neck before something could be broken. "Are you hungry Kalvin?" She asked calmly as she moved to set up the picnic under the tree.

"Bree?" The pouting disappeared as Bree saw Jade bouncing about. Hey! That looked like fun! After a few wobbley steps on the weird green stuff beneath her claws and paws, Bree followed after her brother. Calling out with her favorite word, the little chick never seemed to break a 'run', but stumbled along at a fast walk in hopes of catching Jade.

Already half-way off Leolin, Kalvin stumbled and hit the earth. Fortunately, the grass cushioned his fall.

Jade stumbled sideways as his father nudged him with his strong beak. As he caught his balance Jade began to laugh. He had never moved like that before. He tried to strafe sideways again, but his legs got tangled and he almost tripped.

“Bree?” Jade cocked his head at his sister. Why was she always making that annoying sound?

Kalvin stood before Lucas offer a helping hand. He rubbed his shoulder. “Jeeze Leolin, that really hurt.” He turned to Lucas, smiling eagerly. Obviously his bruise wasn’t that bad. “Yeah.”

Staring off at the trio of griffins, Laura chuckled as she began rumaging through the satchel for a blanket. It was just big enough for the food once she'd spread it out-- they'd have to battle grass stains later. Hardly anything that seemed pilfered from Rem's kitchen, Laura pulled out two small waterskins full of cider. The barely fermented juice wasn't likely to give the pair a buzz, but it would be a refreshing drink all the same.

"I'm sorry I haven't got much..." She murmured, pulling a loaf of bread and a hunk of cheese to place on the cloth along with what looked to be smoked meat. Most likely venisen.

"Bree!" Hey! Her brother was copying her! Her silly little wobbling became a bit more unstable until a misplaced step caused the little griffin to fall beak-first into the dirt. All at once, she began to cry at her sudden pain and confusion of kissing the ground.

With a quiet 'Wark!' of surprise, Leolin quickly went to his little girl's side to nuzzle her and comfort the little girl. Playing was all well and good, but it wasn't fun anymore if someone was hurt. "There there..." He cooed, sitting back as Bree stopped her crying to nuzzle against his foreleg. Maybe he could still find a way to play with Jade while the little girl had commandeered one of his legs?

Kalvin unscrewed the waterskin while staring at the red meat. It was too dark to be chicken or pig meat. Then again, it had been ages since the last time he ate pig meat. The stuff in the waterskin had a strange, tangy smell. Only the cheese and bread looked familiar. “Smells good,” he commented, knowing Lucas might be offended if he asked what it was. The noise by the gryphons attracted his attention.

Meanwhile, Jade was caught between the difficult choices of comforting his sister and playing in the grass. He took a few steps toward Bree and squeaked questioningly, but couldn’t help glancing over his shoulder at the picnic. Why did Bree have to make such a big deal out of a little fall? They should be having fun!

Though Laura didn't know much about cooking, she did enjoy how her family had made cider every year. It wasn't really time time of year for it yet, but she had made a batch to practice and it seemed it'd turned out rather well.

"It's made from apples." Laura murmured before taking a swig from her waterskin. After a gulp, she lowered the skin and used her sleeve to wipe her mouth. Well, not quite the best, but she didn't need to tell Kalvin that. With the commotion from the griffins, Laura turned to see what was going on.

With the crisis averted, Leolin turned his attention to Jade once more. The large tuft of fur at the end of his tail came to land beside Jade only to flick away once more. Hoping to entice the chick with his cat-teaser tail, Leolin lay down to watch his chicks.

The crying stopped when the stinging ebbed and Bree looked over to her brother. "Bree?" She called in curiousity. What was he doing now?

“Oh…” Kalvin placed the nozzle to his lips and tentatively lifted the skin. He pursed his lips, eyes shut tight, and curled up like a dying insect. Shivering, he stuck his tongue between his teeth and peered into the waterskin in silent confusion. “It’s really bitter.” He blushed. “I’ve never had cider before. I mean, I’m just not used to it.”

Jade watched the tail thwap the grass, standing perfectly still. His little muscles tensed and he pounced.

The woman looked to Kalvin with a faint smirk. "It's not even booze yet! It's not that bitter." Hoping to reassure him, Laura thumped him on the shoulder lightly. "Maybe you'll get used to it when you're a bit older, eh?"

The tail disappeared, and Leolin looked around as if it had vanished. His tail having wrapped around his body away from Jade, Leolin kept it out of sight. "Where'd it go?" He mused.

Wobbling towards Jade, Bree began looking around for the tail tuft as well. Where had it gone? She didn't notice the tail twitching faintly between Leolin's forelegs as that was behind her, and decided to amuse herself by watching Jade's own tail. Her own stood straight up behind her as she watched Jade try to make out where their father's tail went.

Kalvin flinched and wrinkled his nose at the cider. His mother could never afford these fancy drinks. Maybe he would get used to it eventually, but for now he watched the chicks play.

Jade chirped and glanced over his shoulder. He didn't care much for daddy's tail. Newness was all around, waiting to be explored, but not alone. Instead of playing daddy's game Jade jumped on his sister and tugged on her ear, trying to coax her out of daddy's arms to adventure with him.

Kalvin gave a tiny smile. Lucas was so lucky to have Leolin and Bree all to herself. Lately gryphons were all Kalvin could think about.

When the griffin chicks began to wrestle, Laura laughed softly. "Aren't they cute?" She asked no one impraticular. More like she was just talking aloud.

"BREE!!!" The chick screeched at first when she was tackled, trying to wiggle free as her brother chomped her ear. Sure it didn't hurt, but it surprised her! The screeching becamed loud chirping, and more and more playful. In the end, she began tussling out with her brother in hopes of getting her ear back, but Jade had the upper hand.

"Hey Kalvin?" Laura asked, watching Jade and Bree a moment longer before turning to her companion. "Remember how you said you wanted to look after the chicks? I really want Bree and Jade to grow up like their father as racers... But with Leolin's racing, I don't have much time to train them. Would you mind helping me?" She gave a sheepish smile, and looked away. After a pause, she spoke again to deliver a bit of bad news. "I can't really pay you though..."

Jade released Bree and scampered away. After a few feet he stopped, bouncing around in the grass and chirping at his sister.

Kalvin looked up. Sometimes people would say the things that were on his mind, like they knew what he was thinking and were just impatient. Usually it frusterated him (he never showed it), but not this time. "Well actually, I am looking for a new job. I could work full time for you if you wanted."

He hoped he could pursade Lucas to pay him something. Most of the time his employeers would start him off with a real small salary until they saw what he could do, then they might pay him a little more. Lucas was one of his only friends, he would have to be more generous than that.

At hearing Kalvin jump at the offer, Laura turned to face Kalvin once more. "I just said I can't pay you. I don't make a lot racing and being a mai--- a major part in the chick's lives." Phew, that was a close one. Looking embaressed, she went back to staring at the chicks in play. "I want them to learn how to race too."

Bree got to her feet and watched her brother bounding off. With a few squawks and wobbley steps, Bree found she wasn't able to keep up with Jade, and made her way over towards the humans instead. Let Jade come to her instead!
