Necron bits make very good parts for Orks to use indeed. My Cyborks are 1/3 Necron warrior. But anyways, I think the best starting army is probably what the game recommends, Space Marines. True they are -incredibly- powerful, but they also have the fewest numbers to remember and the curse of the "one model" stat line (i.e. almost every have the exact same stats regardless of points cost or army role). Also, you can get extra marines by buying the paint set (5 free old style marines to play with), they have small squads overall meaning fewer models to buy, and there are literally hundreds of eBay members and other auctioneers selling their old shelved Marine armies after discovering the army they now adore most. All of those reasons aside, play something your friends don't play. It's more fun and will help you stand out and surprise your enemies who haven't bothered to read your army's Codex.

It all depends on how much you think you can handle when you begin to play

For a newbie to 40k, there is no better army than marines imo. They have simple rules, well, they did, and they are forgiving in most respects, even more so than orks! Tie than in with an easy paint job, low numbers means less work, and you still wonder why marines are the most common army....

Guardsmen are simple as you want them to be or as complex as you can make them

Although space marines are the most prefered choice, I personally think that warhammer is way to expensive to go swithching off armies with, I personally think it's smarter to split a friends army, play some sample games, get the hang of the rules. After that to some studying on each army and based off the games taht you played see which one you would most enjoy playing. Or thats how I went about it.

I jumped head first into the ranks of the marines, and have never left them. I even quit the game for 4 years, and came back to it. What happened? Back to the ranks of the marines.

See then your one of the few people who actually start marines because they like the idea of them in general, like my cousin. Most start with them because thier told that they're the best army or because everyone else they know has them. xp

Start marines my friend, and then feel the weakness... Let your weakness fester. Let your anger boil, and let it turn to hatred. But do not fret my young friend, for there will still be hope for you yet... As the call from Chaos beckons, and pulls you closer, you will feel the power, the power you sought. And as you fight, fight for victory, revenge against the False Emperors false teachings. The Corpse on the Chair is weak, and he will soon bow down to Chaos, for we are immortal, and he is only a human! DEATH TO THE FALSE EMPEROR!
(Start marines, convert to Chaos...)

I started playing just because of one model. I was at a friend's house and saw a Tau Broadside box, and asked if i could build and paint it. I did, and he taught me how to play. I started with tau, and there are good and bad things about that. By using tau, your forced to have to use a lot of strategy, and patience. However, my second army was Chaos. You definately appreciate BS 4 and a 3+ save after using Tau.

I think Orks are a great army, but wouldn't recommend them to a beginner. I lose a lot of games because I still haven't built my army up to operational strength. Make sure you understand all of the rules before you dive into an army. I was under the impression that my shoota boyz would get more than one shot per turn with their big shooty shootas. I was sadly wrong. They get one shot and only hit on a 5 or 6. ='( I right away bought two mobz of them and they suck. Big mistake. I'm still working on making my slugga boyz (stupid parents don't let me work on my army at home.). I need to find a use for my damn near useless shoota boyz. Imperial Guard are a very good starter choice because it's a pain in the a** to counter an armored company that's rolling over your BS2 Orks. If you want to do something interesting, you could make an army of Lost and Damned (From Codex: Eye of Terror) but requires you to but Codex: Imperial Guard, Codex: Eye of Terror, and Codex: Chaos Space Marine. It's a really fun army to make thought. A lot of fun conversions for mutants and traitor guard units. I've been using a lot of Ork bitz in my 6 traitors.
In summery: I reccomend Imperial Guard for beggining but you could easily convert them into an army of Lost and Damned.
