We need something more with this topic I think. People are just posting the things that give them inspiration (me included), but I think we need to bring more of a discussion into it somehow.

I can be inspired by pretty much anything, but the best, I've found, are my creek (not literally mine, but I think of it that way), and stargazing... Especially in Yosemite, now that was amazing...

Caffeine, sugar, and techno! I actually get most inspired on weekend nights. After the kid goes to bed and my husband isn't pawing at me like a lonely puppy. ^_^*

I had tried to write i think four other times before i was serious about it. I actually started serious writing this past October after we had to write a short story for school. It had to be scary and i made mine about ghosts (cause they rock) and it was about 9 pages long when it needed to be seven pages. After that i began to work on my first novel.

I agree with Mel. How about we could also mention the people that inspire us? I think there's already a thread about places, yes?

But really, there has got to be someone out there who inspires you to do certain things. For me, there have always been very kind folks who have inspired me to be as I am. As an example, I can submit to you the following people:

Princess Diana of Wales (she was a cool lady who was also kind to others)
Hunter Campbell "Patch" Adams (he taught me that life isn't always "serious" business; it's probably why I'm even sillier now than I was before I saw the movie, he-he)

I've also been inspired by folks such as Michael J. Fox when it comes to what I want to do for a living. He managed to get his acting career going without ever studying for it. How about that? The guy was so dam talented, nobody even gave that a second look. Too bad about the whole Parkinson's disease but, even after that, he still keeps on going and wants to find a cure. You gotta admire that guy... 3nodding

A person who inspires me is my grandfather who was a writer back home in India, he published many books and was very popular back in India before his passing. I think I look up to him in many ways even though he passed away as a writer because he always used imagination to the fullest extent. He tried to use his own personal experience distort it a little but integrate it into his works.

I am inspired by artwork because all artwork tells a story. I love to go to the art museum in Chicago and look at different types of artwork as even pictures tell a thousand words even when they might be different perception of it differing it by person to person.

Wow! Yer grandaddy must have been real smart, huh buddy? My grandpa was also a writer but he never managed to be famous or anything before he died. I hope that doesn't happen to me... cry

I agree! Artwork can also be inspiring yes. 3nodding

yeah back before my grand father died he was very popular in writing and such, yet he looked at every experience as inspiration to grow in his personal life and then transform it to his writings.

I see... I think he had the right idea cuz sometimes life can get you to write well. Especially if you lead a very active life! I am not the kind to get out of the house often but even I get lots of inspiration sometimes. 3nodding

History tends to inspire me quite a bit. The rise and fall of nations, the workings of monarchies, the machinations begun by single people or even single thoughts. Bring it on!

My first writing experience was poetry. I had always been one of those people who would write poems in class instead of doing whatever I was supposed to be doing, but that soon morphed into a series of nonsensical snippets of random story worlds that I would make up in my head. I actually got accused to plagiarism once because my literature teacher thought the short story I was supposed to write was "too well written."

I didn't get serious about writing until after I came home from college. It was during this time that I had a few characters rolling around in my head with no place to go. Then I had a dream that put it all together in my head, and when November came along I decided I would start my first novel, Ravensblood, for NaNoWriMo. I have since finished the monstrosity (it's about 145,000 words in length) and am in the editing phase. This November will probably be when I make an effort to really crack down on the second book in the trilogy. That's not to say I don't write the occasional poem just to keep it fresh, though. xd

As for inspirations, I get most of my story ideas from dreams that I have. it's silly, I know, because I don't remember most of my dreams. But the ones I do remember (that are not total insanity, mind you) I tend to write down and put in a hat for later use. Music tends to inspire me to write certain scenes as opposed to entire plots, and so when I'm feeling stuck that's usually the way to open up my thoughts. That and walks outside.

People who have inspired me are:

  • Jacqueline Carey (whose writing and attention to detail is phenomenal as well as her ability to bring real-world cultures into her fantasy world)
  • My late father (who taught me that perseverance is everything and never to give up on my dreams)

@hypno: Patch Adams was a wonderful, phenomenal movie that I now proudly own on DVD. Anyone who has never seen it should watch it at least three times. It's full of life-lessony goodness.

Oh, I've never been that interested in poetry. But, evidently, I can write it, because when my English teacher said everyone in the class should write a poem for this 'I Have A Dream' poetry competition, mine got picked to get published! I was so happy! But, then again, so did about ten people in my class... but I was very pleased with myself, all the same. I've still got the certificate.

Hmm... I can't really remember when I first got serious in writing, but I always enjoyed writing stories, right from when I was little (I can remember writing my own version of Little Red Riding Hood when I was little, one of the few memories I still have. I'm very forgetful, you see, I can hardly remember anything from when I was really young). But I think what got me thinking about being an author was this story about a haunted house that I wrote in year five. It was the longest I'd ever written, three A4 pages. I'd probably have been able to write more if I'd been typing, (and I'd have had much better grammar and spelling too) and perhaps I would have finished it. I always had a problem with finishing stories by the end of the lesson. But an hour just isn't long enough, you know? Then again, when I was that age, I had awful grammar and spelling too; my sentences were ridiculously long and awfully written, thank goodness I've improved so much since then (though Mum still says I can't spell, but I can spell most longer words).

But I wasn't properly serious then. Well, now I'm in my early teens, I am trying to write a novel. But I doubt it will get published. It's more like a test. A practice run. Something to get me going. Well, if it's done something so far, then it's made me realise how much I love to write. It's made me realise my dream, which is a good thing. All I want to do is write and write and write and write... no matter how much my Mum is constantly telling me that loads of good authors never get published.

But, for actual inspiration, it's probably reading. I've always been an avid reader, and I know loads of words that most people my ages just sort of go, "What?" at the mention of them. I just loved the stories they told and wanted to jump right in and meet the characters, and I wished I could do the same, and make people want to jump into my stories. I only discovered that I liked fantasy much more than all that 'Jaqueline Wilson', real-life stuff, and wanted to write tales of dragons and magic and all the things that make me tingle with excitement. Now, I find all that 'real-life stuff' incredibly boring.

People that have inspired me:

* All my favourite authors, especially:
- Christoper Paolini: He was only fifteen when he started writing Eragon, and it made me realise that age isn't a particular boundary when it comes to chasing your dream. And he also wrote the most amazing fantasy novels EVER!
- J.K Rowling: Well, um, who wouldn't want their stuff to be as popular as Harry Potter? Plus, the Deathly Hallows made me cry. Well, almost cry.

Alanora; Gosh, that's harsh. Pfft, just because someone's better than average. You should proud that they thought you were too good to be authentic whee
