MidoriRen
audio books kill that with a boring voice.

I''d prefer a book read in monotone on a tape in class than listening to some of my fellow students who apparently can''t read at a second grade level. I don''t know how people who can barely read make it to high school. If they don''t understand the material presented, they don''t need to pass into the next grade quite yet.

Sir Ichigo

I have trouble paying attention to spoken language, so I usually stick to text.

That's probably why I don't like them much... I just don't. I don't even have a good reason, other than that I can't seem to pay attention.

I may, however, have to find a good fantasy book on tape for my commute to high school (Yes, I have a commute... it's 15 miles as the bird flies to my high school, and takes a half hour by car, hour by bus) just to tick my sister off by not letting her listen to the screeching that she calls music in my car. twisted

I have an hour's commute to the university so it's either audio books or cassettes. The radio sucks out that way. sweatdrop

Hmm, that's true. Though we didn't do a whole lot of reading aloud when I was in public school.
(btw, cool new look, Ichigo)

Thank you very much. 3nodding

We read almost everything aloud in my district. It drives me crazy. It's a waste of time in my opinion.

The same thing happens in my classes. It's painful listening to ninth graders who can't pronounce words like contemporary, intermediate, and ability.

"Vaccine."

I was the only person in my ADVANCED Freshman English class who knew what the word meant and how to pronounce it. It made me sad.

I believe reading is better than just listening to the books. But if your in a car, listen to music.

I like them, especially during the school year, that way I have something to listen to on the way to and from school...

eek i was scared because people in my class couldn't pronounce Bow. (as in to bend over in respect), and then when they used the word Bow (like a bow-tie) it was Bow (first one).. woah thats creepy. but anyways. then someone managed to pronouncce bosom. but couldn't pronounce much else. its scarywhen you can read shakespear and no one else can. (except my good friends. the lords (& ladies) of shakespear)

Does anyone listen to them? I spend about 1.75 hours in the car everyday, so I started thinking about getting a couple audio books (ones I'd already read) to listen to.
The only time I've ever listened to one was when I was first introduced to The Phantom of the Opera. My phan-obsessed friend listened to it as she fell alseep during a sleepover, several years ago. But the narrator was rather monotone, so I wasn't too impressed. neutral

Good experiences; bad ones? Would you recomend them?

I've listened to them on road trips etc. I personally, like the HP audiobooks, though I wasn't too impressed with the HP6 one. In fact, I was in Europe when HP6 came out, and I reread the whole series before reading book 6, but I, of course, didn't want to take the massive books 4&5 to Europe, and so listened to them on audiobook instead. The only downside is that while with reading you can read slow or fast or whatever, but with audiobooks you can only listen as fast as the narrator can talk.

Most of the ones I have listened to are as you say "monotone" so be careful not to get overly sleepy while listening... but If you get a tape of a really good book and are driving that far they can be nice to have.

some are good but you have to watch out for others. Most are narated by only one person and that type are BAD, but when they have a full cast there normaly very interesting. then you can find out how names are pronounced and how people think the characters sound.

I listen to them as I go to sleep. It's nice.

I think they're a great idea. Especially when you have two really hyper little brothers in the back seat. It's about the only thing that will keep them quiet and away from each other's throats.
