Heeey~ I know I've never posted here before but I might as well get into it right? I do Choy Li Fut Kung-fu.
I'd say number one. The bulk shouldn't be too bad and Grappling offers little to no protection against standing kicks. If your looking for something to just get comfortable with I'd say number two but in the long run I think number one would deffinatly be the right choice. They look better put together in my opinion.

This is a relatively old topic, but still relevant because I still haven't purchased new shinpads
I've decided to go with #1 pretty much for the same reason was what you said
I already have a set of grappling shinpads, andd even though they stink, I' I can use them for grappling and/or competition
