The pidgey hunt!

After a good night of sleep at the pokecenter, Evelyne woke up early and packed a few things in a smaller bag: 5 pokeballs, 3 potions, her map, pokedex, a small lunch for both her and Ayoka and... a freezbee?

Ayoka, awake since long before Evelyne woke up herself, was currently running in circles after her tail around the dormitory. 'I bet she didn't sleep much because of excitement and yet she's still full of energy', though Evelyne, amused.

"C'mon, Ayoka. Let's go explore Zatao!"

***

"I think we're there, Ayoka. Let's eat a little to get our strenght back before we do anything else, though."

Ayoka let out a happy exclamation at that. They had been on a pretty long hike to reach this point. Evelyne got the poketreat out for the skitty and a sandwich and a bottle of water for her. She also got a bowl to put some water in for Ayoka. They ate in silence, smiling at each other when they weren't admiring the view. It felt so good to be right in the middle of nowhere, in wild nature.

After they ate, Evelyne thought it was time to train a little.

Evelyne: Okay Ayoka! This area is apparently filled with pidgeys, it's a good pokemon to start with. It'll be a good training for you and if we're lucky we might even catch one!

*Ayoka perks up and licks her mustaches*

Evelyne: No, not to eat! It'll become your friend too, like I am sweatdrop

Ayoka: Ki? neutral

Evelyne: xd Yes! I'm telling you! Anyway, we're up against flying pokemon, so I brought this freezbee. We'll practice your jumping tackle, alright?

*Jumps around excitedly and start running even before the freezbee is thrown*

Evelyne: sweatdrop *throw it* Yes, run after it, that's it!

Thinking it would be nice to meet other trainers here, Evelyne watched her skitty miss the toy within a few inches, then pick it up in her mouth enthousiastically before running back toward her.

They did this for a while and Ayoka was beggining to be quite good at catching, or at least head-butting the freezbee in mid-air. The small pokemon was running and about to jump when suddenly, a swarm of pidgeys appeared as they flew out of a tree they were hiding in.

"Oh my, they're here! Ayoka, er, quick after them!" shouted Evelyne, running herself toward the swarm. 'I'm gonna catch a pidgey for sure!', she thought, to fight back her nervousness. It had been a while since she fought a wild pokemon to catch it! Oh well, now it was time to see if she was still in shape as a trainer!

How to catch a pidgey

Ayoka ran toward the swarm then, as the group of pidgeys seemed to start to be too high for her, she jumped and tackled one of them in mid-air. Evelyne, silently thanking whatever existing gods that those were pidgeys and not spearows, caught up to her pokemon, shouting: "Good! Quick, weaken it with tail-whip now!". The other pidgeys, slightly panicked, were flying back into the forest.

Ayoka was turning around to hit the bird pokemon with her strong tail but she barely touched it as it managed to get back in the air. Then, it flapped quickly its wings to throw sand at Ayoka. The small skitty let out a cry and curled up in a ball, her tail facing her opponant as she was engulfed in a cloud of sand. Evelyne couldn't see much either. This wasn't good, the wild pokemon would probably attack at any moment.

"Ayoka! Quick, move!" cried Evelyne. But it was too late; the pidgey had just tackled her, using its beak to do even more damage. The sand cloud had almost disapeared. It was now turning to tackle again.

"Ayoka, it's coming again! C'mon, use... use CHARM!"

At the sound of her partner's voice, Ayoka's ears perked up and she got back on her feet, looking determined. Looking straight into the pidgey's eyes, she let out a long "Kiiiiiiiiiiiii!". Evelyne wasn't sure if that was a proper charm technique because it was the first time she asked it of Ayoka, but it seemed to have worked because the pidgey stopped in mid-air and looked very surprised and just stayed there, looking at Ayoka as if it was hypnotised.

For a second Evelyne looked at the scene, doing nothing, then suddenly, acting mostly on instincts, she grabbed a pokeball and aimed.

"POKEBALL, GO!!" she shouted, as if she was 10 years old again and catching her first pokemon. As the pokeball dropped to the ground, she felt tears were almost about to flow out. She grinned as images of her catching a small rattata came back to her. Shaking herself, she tightened her hands into fists and looked at the ball. Her heart was about to jump out of her throat when finally, the ball stopped moving!

Overwhelmed with joy, Evelyne ran toward the ball. Ayoka was faster and already playing with it.

"Ok, let's find out some more about this little one!" Said Evelyne, getting her brand new pokedex out. She scanned the pokeball with it. "Hm, so it's a guy, young but fully grown. He knows tackle, sand-attack and gust. Wow, gust is pretty rare for a young wild pidgey, he must be quite strong. Good job defeating him, Ayoka!"

"Ki!" replied Ayoka happily. She started sniffing the pokeball and looking and Evelyne.

"Ah, I see, you wanna take a better look at him now, don't you? Pidgey, go!"

A pidgey came out on the ground, looking slightly confused. He started walking around, his wings not quite flapping. Ayoka jumped in front of him, excited. He got startled but stayed on the spot, looking at her. When she started sniffing him, though, he snapped at her and flew over to hide behind Evelyne's leg. Laughing, she turned and sit down on the ground. He seemed a bit nervous but didn't run away.

"Hi there. I'm Evelyne. Come here, I'll give you something to make you feel better. Don't be afraid..." Slowly, the pidgey approached her and let her administrate some potion on some minor injuries. She did the same for Ayoka.

"I have a idea what to call you." she said, gently touching the soft feather on his head. The bird pokemon closed its eyes, obviously a lot calmer now. "Charm would be a fitting name, don't you think?" The pidgey nibbled playfully her fingers in approval.

The injured ponyta in the desert

It was hot today, and being where she was didn't help Evelyne. All of the south half of Zatao had pretty warm weather, but on the other hand had for the most part plenty of trees, hills and moutain for fresh air and shadow. The bare, dry land of the Saxukai desert was something else entirely, even when you were still close to its borders. Evelyne was the kind of person who had difficulty enduring heat too, but she wouldn't give up that easily. She wanted to see them... the herds of ponytas and rapidashes.

She heard of them the evening she came back to the pokecenter with her newly caught pidgey, a sharp-eyed male she named Charm. She had found and caught him just outside a wood close to the Rinaul moutains, just the day after arriving to Zatao. Even though it had been only four days she was here, Evelyne was determined to eventually explore all of Zatao, so of course she wouldn't let heat discourage her! It was nurse joy who had told her that ponytas lived in that region. They were talking as her two pokemon, her pidgey and a skitty she had rescued back at Kanto not long before leaving for the new world of Zatao, were having their small injuries healed.

"I see, Ayoka did a good job battling that pidgey." had said Joy with a cheerful smile, just after Evelyne had told her how she had finally been able to catch the pidgey after Ayoka, her skitty, had surprised him with a charm attack. This was where she had gotten she idea for his name.

"Yes, she's getting stronger! When I found her, she was so weakened I thought I'd just keep her as a pet. But she wants to fight, that little one!" Evelyne had laughed after saying this, feeling proud of her feline partner. "I've been meaning to ask, I saw on my map there is a desert in the south region of Zatao and I was wondering what kind of pokemon lived there..."

"Well, let's see... that region haven't been explored a lot yet, but I hear herds of ponytas have been spotted not too far. They don't wander to deep into the really desertic regions, I recon, but mostly stick to the border and around the big lake in the west. Maybe I'm wrong and stronger ponytas and maybe even rapidashes go deeper into the desert though! And there must be all sort of ground pokemon living deeper in the desert too... well, one thing's for sure, a ponyta herd have been spotted by a ranger earlier this week, close to the eastearn shore."

"Wow! That's incredible! Those pokemon are nearly instinct back at Kanto! I always dreamed I'd see one as a kid...eheh, they seemed almost legendary to me! Ok, that's it! I'll have to go see for myself!", had said Evelyne in a determined voice.

And so here she was. She had brought plenty of water but she didn't dare touch it too much. She wanted to make sure the small Skitty at her heels (Ayoka didn't like pokeballs) and the pidgey hiding in a pokeball attached to a armband she wore on her left arm would have enough for themselves. Especially Ayoka, since she was obviously getting weak, out in the heat like that. Evelyne looked at the small thing with worry.

"Ok, let's take a break Ayoka." She put down her backpack. "Don't look at me like that, we both need to rest." she added as Ayoka made a sound of protest. They sat down on a blanket she fetched in her bag. In spite of herself, Evelyne felt again pride at the determination of her pokemon. She also felt a bit ashamed of herself, because despite everything she said, she was beggining to think it was a waste of time and that she wouldn't see any ponytas. As she was shaking away those thoughts, Ayoka suddenly stood back up, her ears pointing toward the shore that could be seen in the distance.

"What's wrong, Ayoka?" Asked Evelyne as she opened her gourd to pour water in a bowl, before drinking some herself. But soon enough she could hear it too... a thundering sound. And it was getting louder. Looking in the distance, Evelyne saw nothing but a dirt cloud. But she got up too, her eyes wide open. "Is that what I think it is?" she whispered, mostly thinking aloud. They were so fast she could already see them now. Getting nervous now, Evelyne quickly put back her bag on and took the blanket.

"Quick, we should go back a little to not get stomped!" she said, a bit panicked now. They ran for about a minute, before Evelyne judged they weren't in the way anymore. Breathing a little hard, she looked back. The herd was almost in front of her now.

They were beautiful. There was at least thirty ponytas and Evelyne thought she had spotted two or three rapidashes too, but she wasn't sure. She didn't care, as mesmerized as she was by what she saw. Ayoka, a bit scared, had climbed up to her shoulder and her claws were piercing slightly into Evelyne's skin but she didn't notice either. It lasted only a few seconds but while they were right in front of her, about only fifteen meters away, she could see how all of them looked slightly unique, with their markings, their height, the shape of their faces... maybe it was their fire, but she thought it was getting hotter, too. As the herd was once again engulfed in a cloud of dirt, Evelyne closed her eyes to fix forever that image and her feelings in her heart. She felt a little ridiculous about it, but tears of joy were threatening to flow out now. Oh well, she felt too overjoyed to care.

The thundering sound was getting dimmer now but... Evelyne thought she could still hear hooves pretty clearly... "Maybe I'm a little crazy.." she thought aloud with a grin on her face. She opened her eyes. And gasped.

A ponyta was desperately trying to run toward the herd which was now already far away. Evelyne noticed its right hind leg was bent in a un-funny way. The poor creature whinnied and fell to the ground. Horrified, Evelyne ran to it, Ayoka still fixed on her shoulder. As she got closer, the ponyta tried to get up but fell down again. It whinnied again, obviously scared. Evelyne, nervous, slowed down and fetched a potion in the small bag she wore around her waist.

"Shh... don't worry, don't worry..." she babbled. The ponyta was still fighting to get up as she knelt down about a meter away from the dangerously bucking hooves. The joy she had felt only moments before was gone now. Now she wished she could really be the ranger she sometime daydreamed to be. Trying to calm down, she began to approach the ponyta a few inches at a time. Slowly, the ponyta stopped moving, probably from exhaustion. It stared at Evelyne, its eyes wide open and spooked. They were a stunning pale, almost transparent blue. Its base color was just a little bit whiter than most ponytas, and it (he, noticed Evelyne) had pale, bluish grey markings; boots on each legs that faded to a darker and bluer color down to the hooves, spots of varying sizes on his rear, some paler and greyer, others with a little more blue in them. His muzzle was tinted too, and it faded up on almost all the lenght of his long forehead.

Evelyne gained a few more inches. The breathing of the ponyta was more even now. She was close enough to administer some potion on the injured leg. It wouldn't help much; it was probably broken at the ankle. Now Evelyne wished she was a pokemon healer. Fighting back the uselessness feeling, she picked a pokeball and let her Pidgey out. She quickly searched her bag for paper and a pencil and wrote a quick message: "Found an injured Ponyta. Broken ankle. I need help quick! I'm about ten miles south of town. Charm will guide you. Evelyne."

"Charm, I need you to get this to the pokemon center. They'll know what to do. Can you do that?" She asked the pidgey. It made a 'priii' sound, nodding. Then it took the message with it clawed feet and flew away. Evelyne turned back to the injured horse pokemon.

"Don't worry, we'll get you help. You'll be running in no time!" the now quiet beast seemed to understand, because he moved his head a little to put his muzzle under the girl's hand. Smiling, she petted him gently, carefull not to touch the flames. Ayoka finally climbed down off her shoulder and went to smell the muzzle. Then she put both her front paws in the thick fiery mane and began to lick the ponyta's ears.

Evelyne felt a slight panic but relaxed when her skitty didn't seem to get burned. The small cat pokemon then decided to snuggle up between the chest and neck of the ponyta. "If you'll let me keep you after you're healed... I'll call you..." began to whisper Evelyne, knowing well she shouldn't get attached already to the wild pokemon. But she couldn't help herself. Slowly, she ran her hand toward the fiery mane too. And then, when she touched it, the weather didn't feel so hot anymore, strangely. There was just a pleasant warmth that tingled from her fingers into the rest of her body.

She smiled and added:"Hinto"

Charm's mission

The pidgey who had a 'human name' since only a few days, flew away swiftly, taking his mission very seriously. From what he understood, bringing the piece of paper to the humans in the city would help the injured pokemon. Those big fiery things on four hooves weren't a natural predator to bird pokemon so Charm, as he was called, saw no reason not to help it if he could. Pushing his thoughts further than he ever did before that fateful day when he was caught in that strange ball, he marveled at how extraordinary it was that, maybe thanks to him, a pokemon that left alone would no doubt have died, now had a chance to survive.

It wasn't out of cruelty, but usually when a pokemon was too weak to stay in the group had to be left alone to die, or else it just endangered the group. It was like that for pidgeys, and it was probably like that for those strange big pokemon too, thought Charm. But the girl, Evelyne, seemed to think it deserved to live. That girl had been gentle to him, and that gentleness had filled him with emotions he didn't know existed, so he had decided, very soon after being 'caught', that she had to be a very wise member of her specie, and that he'd be loyal to her no matter what. So, gaining in speed, he challenged himself to reach the city as fast as he could.

Being quicker than a human on foot, he could soon see the city's outlines. Remembering, thanks to his bird genes, exactly where the pokecenter was since it was from there they had gone very soon this morning. Just as he was speeding toward it, and wondering how he'd get in, he got lucky as a random young boy opened the door. He made several items fly in the air on his way to the counter and then gracefully landed on it.

"Priiii!" he said to the startled nurse, releasing the piece of paper on the counter. He then proceded to scratch his feet with his beak as the pink haired woman speechlessly took the piece and stared at it for some reason.

"Oh my!" she finally exclaimed. She put something on her ear and poked a strange looking device a few times with her finger. Satisfied with how things were turning out, Charm flew up to perch on the square thing (computer) behind the counter and decided to relax a little, as the woman was jabbering in her device about getting the ranger squad and things.

***

Charm didn't get to rest very long. Under half an hour, a truck parked outside and a man asked Charm to come with them. Feeling very important to be talked to as an equal like that, Charm perched at once on the man's fist covered in a thick leathered glove.

Soon though, he was flying ahead of the truck, showing them the way. He had a feeling those humans knew where to go, but let him be their guide out of respect. To not slow them down, he took the most aerodynamical pose he could, to fly even faster. But still, he thought it wasn't fast enough. Unfortunally, despite his best efforts, he wasn't able to be faster. He knew the truck could go at a much higher speed, though, he had seen it when he was still perched on the man's glove.

If only... his wings... were larger... as he thought this, Charm felt a tingling in the tip of his wings. The tingling spread throught all this body. Suddenly, just a great flap of his wings could carry him a lot further than the tiring fast flapping he had endured so far. Not stopping to wonder how that could be, barely hearing the surprised shouts back on the ground, he joyfully sped to the spot where he knew the girl was waiting.

The rescue team

At first, Evelyne didn't notice the change, they were too far away. She was too overjoyed at the sight of the truck and Charm flying ahead of them, anyway. But one minute later, when Charm zoomed toward her and stopped right in front of her, well.... first she blinked, then, unsure of herself, she whispered:"Charm?" the pidgeotto cocked his head to the side, wondering why his girl didn't seem to be sure it was him. "Priiiidje..otto" he said, as he was about to playfully peck at her finger. But then he stopped as he made the 'otto' sound and just looked at the girl with a confused look. "You.. you evolved!" Said Evelyne "That's incredible!"

She petted him with a wide smile. The truck reached them at that point, and a ranger spoke to her.

"Evelyne, I assume? What exactly happened here?" he said with a stern voice. Getting up quickly because he impressed her, Evelyne looked back at the injured ponyta then back at the ranger.

"I saw a group of ponyta passing here, and this one was the last. It's his leg, he wasn't able to run and stay with the rest of them. He fell down.. and he's been asleep for almost an hour now... ". More rangers were already in the process of putting the injured pokemon on a stretcher. "I...I sprayed some potion on the leg..." added Evelyne in a small voice.

They were already puttin Hinto... no, the ponyta, Evelyne forced herself to think, into the back of the truck.

"That probably eased the pain a little but it was useless, the leg is broken. Maybe it'll be impossible to fix it. I have to be honest with you, if it can't be repared, he'll have to be put down." said the ranger with a tone that seemed patronizing to Evelyne.

As those words sunk in... 'put down' ... the young girl felt more useless than ever. Charm, who a lot taller now, three feet tall was her guess, seemed to feel her pain and touched her hand with his beak. Ayoka layed down on her foot. Evelyne felt that if her pokemon weren't there to share her pain, she'd break down under the weight of it.

They were in a sort of bubble so she jumped when one of the ranger, a girl, said:"Hey, want a lift?"

She took a few seconds to realise she was spoken to, then said:"Yes..."

"I won't leave his side until he's alright..." she whispered, more to herself.

And so they reached the town when the sun was almost set. They couldn't go too fast, the ride had to be smooth for the ponyta.
