Nyhali sighed. "Sorry, Lucas. It won't come up again." She just hoped nothing came up. She sincerely doubted Kedri would actually attack Laura... snap, maybe, but not attack. It would take a lot more interaction with Leolin than she'd had to know he'd feel comfortable with her, so if something did happen... She was going to have to be the one to retrieve the chicks, and that was just that. But she was going to drop it now... and that was that.
Now... there was something else on her mind. What were they going to do with the chicks when they started getting bigger? They'd need owners. Laura deserved the right to decide what to do with them as much as she did... "Hey Luke? I was thinking, when the chicks get older and mommy and daddy aren't so high-strung... do you think Tika would be good at taking care of one of them? You know she loves Leolin to pieces." That was all she really wanted out of it. Tika had tried hard for a long time to earn the right to help Nyhali take care of Kedri, and she absolutely adored Leolin. If Laura had a griffon, why not Tika?
Kedri relaxed visibly after they were all finally asleep and peace reigned once again. "Ah... they might be like this, for a while. I've heard, anyway. It's a strain for them, going from egg to... everything. But it's supposed to get easier after they get acclimated..." She preened gently at her mate and peered down at the children. Their children. It was almost beyond belief... She nestled down in the nest, making content little chirps. This was... wonderful. If a bit nerve-wracking.

Scoffing quietly at Kalvin's attempt to look more manly, Laura gave a half smile and a shake of her head before turning to Nyhali.
"Isn't Tika a bit young?" Her tone of voice certainly could give room for consideration, but she did think about how much the child's mother hated griffins. Besides, there was something she wanted to do with the chicks. Not that she was too sure Nyhali or even Kalvin would really understand. What Laura had in mind wasn't something thought of out of greed, but rather to keep the family together in hopes they would be successful; Laura wanted Leolin's chicks to be racers like he was.
Admittedly, Tika was a very responsible child, and took good care of Leolin when he stayed the night with Kedri. She might be a good suit for the little chicks, but Laura was worried as to what might happen if Kedri or Leolin didn't like the child near their babies. "Maybe when they're a bit bigger.... and if Leolin and Kedri don't seem so protective.... we could see about it. She'd make a good babysitter if nothing else." Unfortunately for Kalvin, the woman didn't even take him into consideration as of yet.
"Yeah..." Leolin looked pleased at the clutch and their Mother. She was so cute, the male couldn't help but move to pay beside her and fluff his mane up like one of the little chicks. "I'm sure they'll grow up to be as pretty as their mother." He cooed softly, and began preening just beside Kedri's cheek to the equivelant of a human's kiss.

Kalvin stared sadly at the chicks. He understood why Nyhali and Lucas needed to find new homes for them, if they tried to care for all of them when they were adults they would run out of food and money. But it seemed wrong to take them away from their parents. They looked so happy with their mother and father.
Of course Lucas would find good homes for them. He would have to. Someone who had had a lot of experiance caring for gryphons, who understood them like ordinarly people understand other ordinary people--someone like that would make a great owner. Kalvin blinked rapidly. "How old do you have to be to own a gryphon?"

Nyhali nodded. "I definitely wouldn't think about it until the chicks are older and Kedri and Leolin are more relaxed about them. And... well, we may not decide to let her actually have one, but she's done good with Leolin and Kedri so I guess I thought we could at least give her a shot at helping to take care of one of them. If nothing else she'd gain experience she can use when she's older. It's suprising how hard it is to come by people who know how to care for griffons, and especially chicks."
She couldn't help cocking an eyebrow at Kalvin's question. "I think it's more a matter of maturity than actual age... why? Pining for one?" She also couldn't help a chuckle. Griffons were very enticing to look at... though a lot of people regretted it after actually purchasing one. Especially among the nobles. Apparently they actually thought griffons were supposed to act like lapdogs.
Kedri "kissed" Leolin back. "Oh... I hope some of them take after you. Though the boys... seem to look like me already, don't they?" She fluffed up in proud embarrassment, a small blush coloring her nares. "Well I hope they're as sweet as you are, at least..."

"They won't be taking my girl from me." Leolin said as he puffed up his chest as if to look more manly. Quickly deflating when he saw how cute her pink little nose turned red, and leaned against Kedri with a deep throated thrumming.
"Hmmm, I see why they like cuddling. Mommy is cozy..." He nuzzled her soft mane before turning to look at the sleeping triplets with pride. Three little chicks. Never had he thought he would be so lucky as to have a family of his own.
"He's pretty good with griffins, Nyhali." Laura mused calmly as she turned to face the pair. Her ruined vest caught on a nail poking it's head just out of the wood on the rail she'd been leaning on. Surprised, Laura pulled off the tattered bits of leather and sighed softly when she looked over what remained of her vest. Oh well, they could be made into nice gloves if nothing else.
"He's a stable boy at the race track, but I don't think he could care for his own griffin..." Folding the cloth in half, she rested it over her forearm and turned to look at Kalvin. "Is that what you were trying to say?"

“Well… I have been working at the stables since I was nine.” He looked down. “I guess I have always wanted one of my own.”
But Lucas was right. His mother’s house was too small for a gryphon. Money was better now than it had been in the past with just one mouth to feed and no more doctor bills, but there was no way he could afford to keep a gryphon while working at the stables. It was something he daydreamed about from time to time, but to consider it seriously…
Kalvin clenched the wooden railing on the side of the stable. In his whole life Kalvin had never received any gifts, not even for his birthday. He never got anything he wanted, with so much disappointment looming over his life he had never truly dared to even want. What if there was something he could do to make more money? Maybe he wasn’t seeing the situation clearly.

Nyhali gave Kalvin a scrutinizing look. "I dunno, Lucas... You say he's good with griffons? Has he ever dealt with chicks?" She looked thoughtful. "Do you think he'd deserve a chance at one if he could show us he was able to take care of one of them?" He was Laura's friend... and Nyhali sincerely doubted she'd have asked him over here if she didn't think highly of him. Tika was getting a chance at least to show if she could be responsible... if Laura thought it was worth giving him a shot, Nyhali would give him a shot too.
Kedri blushed more deeply and snuggled against Leolin as well as she could without disturbing the chicks. "Daddy's comfy too..." she murmured in a soft teasing tone. She stared down at them a moment along with him. "It's like a dream, almost, isn't it?"

"I don't think so..." Laura mused, glancing to Kalvin a moment before turning to look at the happy family. A cruel practical joke came to mind, and Laura suppressed a smirk. Kalvin surely wouldn't go through with it.... "Maybe if they trusted Kalvin enough to sit in their stall with them. I might consider letting him watch the chicks for a while."
Of course she hadn't ment it, and certainly didn't expect Kalvin to try it. One glance at her vest would show just how dangerous the griffins could be after all!
The griffin made a sound much like a laugh with his own brand of squawks. "I know what you mean." Leolin murmured, looking to the humans on the other side of the rail. "I didn't expect an audiance though..."

Kalvin gawked at Lucas and shook his head. “I can’t do that. They just had their babies. If I went in there now I’d wind up, well, dead.” He narrowed his eyes, not to be put down. “Besides, Leolin already let me fly with him. That must mean he trusts me.”
This was the first he’d mentioned of his unexpected flight in the woods. He thought Lucas would be angry with him before. For some reason, his reaction didn’t seem important now. He just wanted him to know he was capable of handling a real gryphon, even if Leolin’s flight was more of an accident.

Nyhali's eyebrows shot up at Laura's jest, but she decided to keep her mouth shut. This particular bit was between "Lucas" and Kalvin, because Nyhali had no idea as to the exact extent of their friendship or Laura's trust of... well... anyone besides herself when it came to Leolin.
Kedri's happy fluffing went down and she peered at the humans gathered around. "Well... I suppose in their strange human way they're just trying to be happy for us and watch out for us. I just wish they'd realize they keep fraying our nerves and scaring the wits out of us with all the watching and attempts to 'help'..." She peered up at Nyhali and glowered, hoping her human would get the point and vacate with the other two so the griffons could have some nice quiet time.
Nyhali did see, and she did indeed get the point. So much for not poking her head into the conversation between Laura and Kalvin. "Excuse me, gents, but mommy seems to be giving me the evil eye. I think we'd better remove ourselves for a while."

Despite Kalvin's worries, Laura wasn't angry in the slightest. In fact, she scoffed softly. "That wasn't something I ment seriously Kalvin." She turned to look at Leolin nesting beside Kedri and putting her griffin under an almost scrutinous gaze. "But after a race, it couldn't have been good to take him flying with you on his back. He needs a few days rest after a race." Leolin had come through without any sign of injury from the long flight, so Laura supposed it was all right this time. "Next time he lets you ride him, make sure he gets his rest, ok?"
With Kedri's glare and Nyhali's suggestion, Laura nodded her head. "Yeah, I suppose we should." Stepping away from the stall's railing, Laura turned to head out of the stables. "Do you think it's late enough for lunch now?" She asked with a pleasant smile.
The large male laughed softly at seeing Kedri's expression. "You'll scare the chicks with that!" He said in a whisper, not wanting to wake the little ones. Stretching out where he lay, the griffin easily took up his half of the stall only to lay his head and neck over Kedri's shoulders. He had a good view of the boys from where he lay, and looked rather proud of his large family.

Kalvin blinked in astonishment. Leolin had let Kalvin ride him without any persuasion, shouldn’t that count for something? He trudged behind Lucas, furious with him for acting so non-nonchalant as if riding a gryphon was a cute trick any toddler could master. “You said if Leolin trusted me you would let me help look after the chicks.” He glared at Lucas stoically. Who cared if it was just a joke?

The Fates seemed to have turned on Nyhali with Kedri's glare, because as soon as she exited the stable area she was acosted by one of her "lady servants", who promptly scolded her and told she had BEST go get ready or she was going to be late for her appointments...
Nyhali sighed. "That was sort of the point..." The servant looked aghast and she rolled her eyes, waving over her shoulder at the "boys". "Seems duty calls. You two have fun, you're welcome to stay however long you feel like."
Kedri clicked her beak amusedly and her expression softened. She reached over to preen her mate one more time before she settled around the chicks and allowed herself to doze. She was a bit tired after all the excitement and she knew nothing would get at them here, especially with Leolin watching over them.

Surprise flashed over her face like lightening before the storm rolled through. "It was a joke, let it go Kalvin." She snapped in return. "If you press your luck I'll forget about the offer entirely." Obviously, Kalvin could be childish at times.
Glancing to the griffins, Laura proceeded to leave the stables when she saw they were going to sleep. The last thing she wanted was to have a fight then and there with Kalvin when it would disturb the chicks and their parents.
