He was wrong, of course, in assuming that she would loose intrest. She was far too interested in watching the strange way that he was swimming... And trying to immitate it.
It was hard, of course. Her tail wasn't nearly as long as his was and that hurt her attempts more than helping. In the end she was left with making strange noises as she swam awkwardly behind him.

He was fine for a bit, convinced that she'd lost interest and that he'd be all alone as he cruised though the water. At least until he started to hear noises from behind him. Craning his head around he glared at the piece of bait following him around.
"You can't swim like that. Your tail was not made for it." Common sense, it seemed, wasn't so common anymore. It was obvious his tail was built to let him cruise with minimal effort. Hers was certainly not.

Her nose scrunched as she glared up at him. "I can still try. No one ever said I couldn't... B'sides. How are we supposed to understand things if we don't know how they work?" Maybe he'd understand what she was saying this time... Because she'd certainly understood his words.

"You don't figure it out by hurting yourself." He turned back around and continued on his way. The reef was getting further off and the sea floor was dropping away under them. She'd get scared soon enough.

When she finally did get slightly spooked she sped up, swimming closer to him. She was too used to following after others to turn back on her own now... Even if trying to find her way back would have been an adventure of its own.
"... A-are... You ever going to tell me your n-name?"

"I am more inclined to tell you to go back to the reef where you belong." He didn't turn to look at her but could easily feel where she was swimming along beside him.
"You do realize that the further you get from the reef the less food there is for you..." He paused for a moment to grin. "And the more like a carry along lunch you seem to me"

"I... I don't eat much." Her nose wrinkled a bit further as a bit of steel returned to her spine. "I am not lunch. The nerve of you bigger fish; always assuming that things smaller than you are eidible. I could be useful, you know."

"That is how things work and you'll do good to learn that." He wrapped his tail and spun around rather quickly for something of his size. "Bigger eats smaller, stronger eats weaker, smarter eats idiotic. You eat or you become eaten." That was how things always worked. Bigger ate smaller unless bigger was a certain black and white whale and then bigger could eat even bigger if it really wanted to.
"You could be useful as a snack."

"I'm not weak and I'm not stupid." She was the smartest in her school and that was saying alot because there were some really smart fish in her school. They knew all sorts of things... But she knew more. Especially now that she had gotten out on her own. None of them could claim to have done such a thing before.
"I won't always be small either! I'm growing more every day and soon I'll be almost as big as you are! Then I won't be a snack!"

She'd followed a predator and gone away from the reef. That was two points into stupid and two too many for his books. Something could be said for her tenacity but that didn't make up for the lacking qualities.
"No, buy then you'll be a proper meal."

Her brow furrowed as she glared at him for a moment before darting in quickly to n** hard at one of his fins. "I am not food!"

He whirled around as she nipped him and his teeth snapped shut on her tail. He didn't use enough force to bite it clean off as he could have most likely done but enough that it would certainly hurt.
Anything smaller than him was food whether it complained about it or not. She would learn that the only reason she wasn't dead was because he figured getting all the bones out of his teeth wouldn't be worth the effort of eating her.

Her scowl darkened as his teeth clamped on her tail. She continued to glare at him with all of the ire of a small woman scorned and would continue to do so until he let go. Ooooh. She'd show him she was worth something more than a snack... Someday.

He let go slowly. "Do not bite me again or it'll be your head next time." And next time she would end up as a snack. Flicking his tail again he turned back around and continued to coast along though the water.

Lesson momentarily learned she simply stuck her tongue out at him once his back was turned before swimming after him once more. She was smart... But she still had alot to learn and maybe, just maybe, this Big Fish would be the one to teach her.
