Finally, they were there.
Giving one last heave, he slammed the other male agaisnt the tree, his wing writhing in pain at the mouth still attached to it. It swung and fought to free itself, sending dozens of black feathers flying in the air in the process.
Forced to look at his chest as his mouth was still clamped to the other's body, Plague barely noticed the other's hoof swinging out. He wasn't sure what the stallion's motive was, but the hoof landed on his own shoulder, causing the mutant to scream and release his prey, the hoof having hit the former scar Diabetia had left in his leg from months prior.
"Damn you!" he howled at the stallion, attempting to slam him against the tree once again, "I've eaten your kind, and your kind's offspring for years, long before you were ever conceived by your wretched parents!"
One hollow eye gazed into his opponent's as his head drew closer to the other's. Nearly cheek to cheek now, neither could attack without the other attacking directly back. Baring his fangs, his glare bore into him.
"...and what makes you think I won't do the same to you?"

Helaku bellowed in pain as he was slammed against the tree with a faint sound of cracking ribs, releasing his opponent's wing with one last wrench. Agony laced up and down his side, intensified when the massive mutant slammed him against the tree again. Struggling not to wince with each breath, the grey stallion stared back into the black's hollow eyes. "Because...you are...a bully...fighting only those...you...are sure you can beat." He paused often as he spoke, trying not to tax cracked and possibly broken ribs.

He paused, and stepped away from the stallion, allowing space between the two of them as his wounded wing fell down and held itself against his side. His anger had subsided just as quickly as it had grown, and his eyes still focused on the creature in front of him.
"Bullies choose their prey because they are weaker. When I have found an opponent worthy of my time and skill, I will have no qualms attacking and defeating it. And that makes the difference between a bully and myself."
He drew closer, his aching jaws demanding more of the flesh they had savored the flavor of earlier, when his nose caught the drifting scent of sweetness. Of all times to have found her...
He took a step backwards yet again, and turned his back towards the stallion, showing he had no fear nor respect for the other creature who had pained him only minutes before.
"It would do you good to watch that mouth of yours. Next time, you won't be so damn lucky." he growled, before stepping back into the forest and out of sight. If he hadn't discovered what he had been searching for, there was no doubt he'd continue on with sating his appetite. But priorities came first, and he wasn't about to lose her yet again.

"So you think..." Helaku held himself up until he was certain the dark...thing...had truly gone for good. Once assured of his own relative safety, he allowed himself to slump to the ground, sliding into unconsiousness brought on by pain and blood loss.
Yes, there was more than emotional pain to worry about.
