"I don't know if Leolin and Kedri would let you too close..." Laura said worriedly, taking Leolin's wishes into consideration. "But I could ask Nyhali if you could come watch them hatching. The eggs are with their mum of course."

The griffin chauffed at the affectionate scratching. Oooo that felt good.... Rolling his head and torso nearly upside-down to allow Kalvin to scratch him better.

"I don't think Leolin will mind," said Kalvin with confidence. The gryphon was like puddy in his hands. He had never met Leolin's mate, but knew that Leolin would vouch for him.

"He certainly would! He nearly chased me out of the stable with the eggs in it once they were laid!" Laura said at once, shaking her head. "No no, best to watch from outside their stall."

Not wanting to break the boy's heart, the woman tried to think of something that might make Kalvin equally happy. There had to be something... Aha!

"Maybe instead, could you take Leolin hunting after your shift? He needs to rest now, but if you ride him out to the woods he'll hunt up a deer or boar. Assumin' he can't finish it, there'll be enough left for you to smoke for your own supper."

Kalvin smiled sheepishly. What a dream! "I don't know how to ride a gryphon," he said a little sorrowfully.

That wasn't his only reason. He'd never been to the woods before, what if something went wrong? Kalvin wouldn't know what to do if they got lost.

"It's not so hard; you trust Leolin, right?" Laura asked with a smile. "He'll look after you. If you don't think you can, I can teach you when you come to see Leolin's chicks."

Kalvin glanced at Leolin seriously as if seeking his consul.

((Short post, I know, but I have nothing else to say until Leolin gives some sort of sign, even if it's one of confusion.))

Leolin was leaning on the lad's lower half after being skritched under his beak. When the scratching stopped, the griffin looked up at Kalvin with a cocked head of curiousity. What was more important than making him happy?

Chuckling softly, Laura shook her head. "I could pay you to look after him for the evening. After you're done cleaning stalls and the like of course."

Kalvin was about to ask how much but stopped himself short. This was a great oppertunity, he shouldn't be worrying about money and of course Lucas would pay fairly. He smiled meekly. "I'd like that."

"All right," The woman gave a bow of her head. "I leave him in your care then. Just don't spoil him rotten Kalvin." With a soft chuckle, Laura stepped over the mounds of straw in the stable to her dear partner to kiss him good bye on his beak.

"You be good, ok?" When the griffin squawked as if to tell her 'good bye' she smiled brightly. "Here Kalvin, I'll be going home." Rumaging around in her pocket, she pulled out a closed fist containing several copper coins. Enough to afford him a simple meal, but it was all she could spare. "Please take him out to the woods so he'll be able to hunt when you're done working. He should be rested up by then."

Leolin was fairly surprised by his partner's actions. She was leaving him here with this lad? Ahh well, he didn't mind Kalvin so much. So long as he didn't act like they were having a conversation; that could get annoying as he recalled. Most of it was mindless chirps and whistles, but it kept Kalvin happy.

"Oh..." Kalvin looked at the coins in his hand. "Leolin knows his way around, doesn't he?"

He couldn't back out now that Lucas had paid him, but the coins couldn't stop him from worrying. He had never been in the woods alone before.

"Yes, he catches his own dinner every night." Giving the lad a reassuring smile, Laura stepped away from the pair towards the door. "Leolin can find his way back when he's finished. Just tell him to go home and he'll walk you to where I'm staying in the city." With that said, she gave a small wave goodbye before departing to leave the pair alone.

Watching Laura go, Leolin called after her worriedly. He hoped she'd be all right without him, but he'd been told to stay in stables before. With the word 'hunt' having been uttered, he expected he wouldn't be staying very long in the stables.

Kalvin nodded, looking at the coppers and placing them in his pants pocket. Anyway it would be good to get away from mother's house for a few hours. Maybe if he did a good job Lucas would let him babysit Leolin's chicks.

The manager stopped by not long after Lucas left to inspect the stables. He seemed pleased with the job. When Kalvin told him about Mark not coming into work the manager made a face that made Kalvin smile inside. He didn't want to look like he was out to get Mark. He really was, but he didn't want to look like it.

((And I think that's a rap. We'll continue this in the woods. 4laugh ))

By the time Kalvin got back to work, Leolin had found himself taking a very comfortable nap. With a full trough of water and a soft bed to sleep on the griffin felt like he was getting the red carpet treatment.

With the faint noise of Kalvin finishing up, the griffin's ear twitched slightly to face the direction of the sound. All the while keeping his eyes closed. He was waiting for some sign as to where he was to go next after all.

The air was cool as the last of the racers left the stables. The crowd had long since retreated to their homes and dinner with their families. Kalvin wiped the muck from his hands with the peaceful satisfaction of a person who barely feels the weight of their fatigue. Outside the sun lazily decended along the curve of the earth, leaning on a cloud in the blue sky.

Kalvin leaned his hand on Leolin's shoulder gently to let him know he was there. "Wake up, Leolin. It's time for us to go," he said firmly.

Bright green eyes opened up as the griffin lifted his head to look at Kalvin. Thrilling softly, the griffin bumped his head affectionately against Kalvin's debris covered apron.

With the formalities of affection taken care of, the griffin stretched himself out spanning much of his large stall with a large yawn. Giving a good shake sent the bits of hay and fluff from his feathers, and a little scratch of his beak with his foreclaws. As his eyes lifted, they scanned over Kalvin before the griffin began to nudge him over with his beak in hopes of finding a snack on his person.

With food obviously on his mind, he had completely forgotten Laura had said 'hunt' earlier. Hunt? Who needed to do that when the Racer's number one fan was there, hopefully, with food.
