Ah I heard about that! I just never saw it. I've only seen EoE once and I didn't notice.

I don't think there's any big symbolism in it. I really just think that Anno is just messing with us...again. If it HAD to be there it would be more noticable...kinda like his hate letters...Those really were needed either other to satisfy his own indulgence.

The last series he directed before EVA was cutie honey, which was basically chicks with big guns, and bigger tits.....it sucked.....If people sent mail(love mail/hate mail) about EVA to him, its just telling him that people are actually wacthing his material, and that is what matters

Man....I really can't type in the morning.

Just to clarify....showing the letters was unneccessary in the film other then the fact that he wanted to do it. I just approach the whole Shinji/Rei thing in the same light. He wanted to have it in....no other real symbolic reason.

I think that shot was because Shinji and Rei are a part of each other. Kind of...not necessarily genetically, but...psychologically. There seems to be this force that pulls them together and they became one somewhere along the way. If you read the manga (#5), when Shinji explains to Asuka that he is NOT dating Rei, he says that they just seemed connected and that for some weird reason, Rei is like a part of him....it was in the french version ne ways....

Ya, it was like that in the English version as well.
Something about her 'being a part of himself that he lost a long time ago' or something along those lines.
I could check, but I'm lazy. ...

So in the manga he doesnt 'like' Ayanami in 'that' way.

Or, at least, he doesn't say he does. wink (must get the manga series...but must save money as well...crap) I'm not to sure exactly how Rei and Shinji relate to each other, on intimate levels and interpersonal levels...but I too have always felt that they had some sort of connection.

They do have a connection. Rei = Yui stew, so you'd figure that she has some kind of unseen bond with Shinji.

Well, yeah...that's kind of a given. biggrin Personally I always thought there was something a little more than that...I don't know, maybe its my Rei fandom...ness...that leads me to think that way. wink

Haha, I nearly forgot about your Rei fandomness. lol

Please don't tell me you JUST found that out?
I haven't watched Eva in... say 5 months or even focused on it in 5 months because I didn't like how it felt when I did it... So here goes my little input post.
If I remember where this scene is correctly, I think that Shinji has simply found himself in Rei (Now Lillith Rei) and if mem serves, he's screaming in the background so he's freaking out over it too.
Lillith Rei is the pure connection with every living human being on the plannet, Shinji realized that in a diffy way, I suppose.
*shrugs* But what do I know... I'm just a girl...

The tank isn't in End of Eva tho is it? Ritsuko had destroyed it by then. Unless it was one of the trippy flashback things.
