Severus could fly. Voldmort could fly. No one else, including Dumbledore, could fly. Thus Severus and Voldemort place above Dumbledore in the power category.

Severus could trick the Drak Lord through Legilimency and Occulumency. No one else could, except possibly Dumbledore. Thus, Severus is more powerful than Voldemort.

So, clearly, Severus ranks as the #1 wizard, in reference to sheer power.

Flamel, Ollivander and Gregorovitch get points for cleverness, but not for power so much. And the founders, along with Merlin, are part of a totally different era.

Oh, yeah. And not only did he invent spells, as others have mentioned. He created them at age sixteen!

And! Grindlewald's alive in the flashback section. xD

Actually, Voldemort killed Grindelwald in book 7, after he found out from Gregorovitch that Grindelwald stole the elder wand.

Which leads me to my last point: We can't really say that Snape is the third most powerful wizard because there are so many witches and wizards in the world JK Rowling created, and we don't even know who a fraction of them all.

No, I'm not saying that Snape is a powerful wizard. I'm saying that, yes, he is powerful, as almost everyone here has pointed out, but he might not be the third most powerful.

I absolutly agree. It's true Snape is a great wizard, and one truely not to be messed with, but you never know. There could be plenty of wizards who are, perhaps, even stronger than Dumbledore. So we really can't know for sure if Snape is indeed the third strongest wizard of all time.

Snape is the best and nothing anyone can say well ever change my mind, I mean every thing he has ever done was to help Harry *so what if I wanted Harry to die in the 7th book* Snape also lost the love of his life to James and I think that having all that happen to him made him stronger.

To nitpick in favor of fourtysecondscarf, Flamel was technically an alchemist, not necessarily a wizard.

But I agree that Snape is wicked powerful 3nodding

True, but I'm not entirly sure he would have been well known if he were merely an alchemist, even IF he invented the sorcerors stone.... not only that, if he were a muggle, where would he have gotten the resources, or the knowledge, to create the stone? Because if he were a muggle, he wouldn't have access to everthing he needed for that. I'm fairly certain he was a wizard, or at least had ties to the wizrding world prior to his invention

OOH!!!
I must discount the flying thing though...I think it was a spell that voldemort created over the 6th book, which he taught to Sev. Dear old Dumbles didn't have a chance to learn it...*tear*

That is...If I'm right...we also don't know if he could fly or not...he might have...

But still...You bring up a good point, and I think you could be right on everything else...

I agree with all of you that well Snape is powerful, but that hes not the most powerful out of all of them. In other countries, there may have been some extremely powerful ones. Look at Harry, I think he would be one of the most powerful ones, or just a wizard with alot of luck.

I'd say it goes more like:
Albus
Voldemort
Grindywald
Snape
Harry

Now I would be able to concede that Snape and Harry may be around the same, but I don't know.

Actually...Harry isn't all that powerful. He's a cut above his classmates in defensive spells, but in mostly everything else he's average. The only thing he has goin for him is the whole prophecy thing....

Hermionies the REALLY useful one of the group...

I agree in that Snape was one of the most powerful. I think that all three are extremely powerful, but in different ways. Dumbledore said that he could never do some of things that Voldemort could, but the same thing is with Voldemort. He could never do some of the things Dumbledore could either. Snape however, I believe might actually be the most powerful also, because;

1. He is EXTREMELY tricky, the whole book you never knew for sure what side he was on. He had almost the entire wizerding community fooled. That shows he has MAJOR brains.

2. He makes his own spells.

3. He tricked Voldemort with ledgilimency.

4. He is an AMAZING potion master, and thats not even his best subject!

5. He's the Half Blood Prince.

I heart Snape!

I think Snape could easily have been the third most powerful wizard. He could fly just like Voldemort. I don't know whether Dumbledore could or not but we've never seen him doing it so maybe not. Also, Snape was a very skilled Legimens and made up his own spells and some of them quite powerful. Not only that but he made up these spells when he was a teenager.
