Ishizuke blinked at Jacoba's newest attack on her, and decided that it wasn't worth it. She didn't even know what the girl was talking about. What was Halloween? Mama had never explained that to her. She cast around for some way to distract from the topic until she could understand better.
"You'sa sister very talky," she said eventually. "Eats crayons," she added disapprovingly. "Talka lots an' then leave an' you come." She added the last two words darkly, like Jace's arrival had ruined her day. And truly, it hadn't, but maybe she would get the hint and lay off.

Jacoba's face darked. "Wisp s'dummy," she said airily. "She stoopid." Eating crayons sounded like something her younger sister would take to with glee: she had nearly given Beatrix a heart attack by celebrating the first few days of her life by eating "paint candy". (Beatrix had had to mutter about wallpaper.)
However, it didn't seem quite right for Ishizuke to disapprove. It wasn't her sister. Jacoba owned Wisp by rights of family, shackled by the ownership bonds of being older. "But she not monsterface," she added, and in awe: "You's hidjus."

Ishizuke blinked when Jacoba insulted her and bit her lip, turning her head and back on the cruel little girl. She crossed her arms over her chest and tried determinedly not to cry. There was no reason for her to cry. She wasn't hurt.
But she kind of was. She knew what the word 'hideous' meant, and Jacoba had just called her that. That was really mean. Nonetheless, she wouldn't let Jace see her cry, no matter how mean the little legless girl was.

Jacoba had really only been impressed; her cruellest insults mainly pertained to how somebody smelled, or threatening to put them down a toilet. The fact that she considered Ishizuke to resemble a monster mask was a compliment. It was probably difficult to get that ugly. Jacoba herself tried to perfect pulling faces in a mirror. She pulled her teeth up over her top lip, crossed her eyes and blehhhhed at Ishi.

Ishi eventually got herself under control and turned to look at Jace. For a moment, she blinked, and then she realized that the girl was making faces at her and didn’t seem to be insulting her anymore. Her expression changed from mildly angry to something like amused, and she smiled just a little bit. Screwing up her own face, she stuck her tongue out right back at Jace.
She wasn’t going to let her guard down, though, and stifled the giggle that bubbled up in her throat.

Pleased at the reaction, Jacoba moved to her next party trick; she wrinkled up her eyelids and touched her nose with her tongue, obviously a hugely impressive thing for a toddler. Then she grinned at Ishi, frank and pleased with herself. Ishizuke didn't have the medal yet for funny faces!

Ishi's mouth formed a wondering 'o' when Jacoba touched her nose with her tongue. She couldn't do that!
...could she? Immediately, the girl proceeded to stick her tongue out and curve it, trying her hardest to touch it to her nose, halfway crossing her eyes in an attempt to watch what she was doing. This went on for several seconds, but eventually she gave up in disgust and looked sadly at Jacoba.
"I no do," she said, sticking her thumb back in her mouth to punctuate the disappointment.

"I got long tongue," Jacoba bragged, having taken it away from pressing against the bridge between her nostrils. Bored with simply demonstrating to Ishizuke about how she was a great example of her species, she said: "Le's play bears. BRRROWAR."
The last seemed to be her imitation of a bear, hands raised and hooked into claws as she snarled with full teeth.

Ishizuke blinked when Jacoba transitioned from making faces to roaring at her. She did a lot of playing pretend with her big sister, but Angelique's idea of a good imagination game was playing princesses, and sometimes pirates. Not bears. Ishi frowned a little bit, wrinkling her nose as she thought about bears.
She knew they were big and furry and they tried to gobble up Goldilocks...but that was about the extent of it. She wasn't a big studier of animals. Her mommy kind of...hated biology. And zoology.
So she did the only thing she could think of: tried to clarify. "Bears, like Goldilocks? I growl?" she asked.

Jacoba knew Goldilocks well: and it made more sense, considering Ishi had blonde hair and everything. Besides, it was loads more fun playing a bear with a possible victim. "You be Goldilocks," she said immediately, orange eyes narrowing. "I's gonna be bear."

If Ishizuke's reasoning skills were slightly more advanced and her memory better, she might have thought uh-oh and gone and hid from Jacoba. As it were, she smiled at the idea of playing a part she understood and nodded. "Kay!"
Then she waited patiently for the other girl to initiate the game, mostly because she wasn't quite sure what to do otherwise. In the back of her head, reason began to sneak up on her, and she began to realize what she had gotten herself into. Sort of.

"Rowwwwr!" said Jace immediately, hands in the 'claw you to death' position again, making gruesome faces as she got into her role of The Bear. She managed to conflate it with the Big Bad Wolf, somehow, but it still worked: "I'm gonna EAT YOU'S UP."
She did not wait for any kind of counterargument; she just began crawling towards Ishi, still making blood-curdling growling noises.

And then it registered with Ishizuke exactly what she had gotten herself into. She winced when Jacoba roared, scrambling to her feet and backing away from the snarling girl. "Nooo," she whined, not even playing, just genuinely afraid of her growling companion.
"Don't eat me," she continued, backing away until she hit the low wall of the creche. She had never spent time with anyone like Jacoba before, and it didn't seem at all unlikely that the girl would just drag her down and eat her.
She was scary.

It seemed as though Ishi wasn't such a wet noodle after all - she was interestingly hidjus AND she could play realistically! "Raaaaarrrgh!" the bear demanded. "I's the bear!" Then she clamped on to Ishizuke's shoe with her teeth and shook her head like a dog with a rubber bone.

Getting bitten for real was altogether too much for the already high-strung Ishizuke. She squealed loudly and tried to pull away, losing her balance and falling down. The scariness and then the shock of falling and the stress of being up late were taking their toll on the girl.
She wasn't sure what to do, so she did the only thing she could: she screamed loudly and tried to escape the scary Jacoba.
"MOOOOOOOOMMYYYY!!"
