A small fly settled upon Nessa's wing and she ruffled her feathers to shake it off. Iritated it moved to sit upon her apple. The green Shrila shook it off and took another bite of the delicious treat as the fly buzzed angrily away.
Turning her attention once more to Milo, Nessa felt much better. The expression held upon his face and the way of which he talked of Sonata showed how much he really did care about her and how happy he seemed to be now. Not wanting to break him out of his little dream world, Nessa took another bite of her apple. Eventually, however, the silence became a bit too much.
"So you've no idea where she is?" She felt rather bad for bringing up a possibly sad question but she wanted to break the silence and really had nothing else to ask.

He flicked his tail, taking another bite of his apple. At least she was nice and allowed him to talk without interruptions. That was always a plus. In response to her question he shook his head sadly. "No, I'm afraid I've no idea."
Perhaps it would be good to tell Nessa why? It wouldn't hurt. If anything, it would explain why he couldn't find her. "The reason I don't know where she is, is because, well.. Her father sent me to find some apples. While I was gone, he tried to force her to be mates with some prideful idiot stallion. He knew I was averse to the idea, so that's why he sent me off. Sonia wouldn't have liked the idea either, I was sure, and I was right. By the time I returned, poor Sonata had run off to get away from her father and the stallion he tried to force upon her, and no one had any idea where she'd gone to. Once I found out I gave her father a piece of my mind and a few apples to the face, then left for good to try and find her. As you can see, I haven't exactly been very successful yet."

She nodded her head sadly. It must have been terrible for the poor mare. If anything like that happened to Clover Nessa would give them a damn big piece of her mind. She wasn't sure how the green Bae would react either. She was too soft, too forgiving, who knows what would happen in that situation?
"I'm terribly sorry for your er.. not loss.. but.. oh I dunno how to say it.." She felt rather stupid and akward now. "I guess I'm just sorry that she and you had to go through that. I don't know what I'd do if Clover ended up in a situation like that.. or what she would do. At least Sonata has managed to get away from the situation for now." Comforting things, she reminded herself. Say something to make him feal better. Boy she was not good at this sort of thing. "I'm sure you'll find her again. Or she'll find you."

He nodded, taking a last bite of his apple. "Yes, I know I'll see her again soon," he said after he'd swallowed, and flicked his black-tufted tail thoughtfully. "I'm sorry it happened, too, but it was bound to sooner or later. Her herd always tries to arrange mates, but she's too free-spirited for such a thing. I'm sure she's much happier wherever she is now, though I still can't wait to find her. She needs me, though, as some can't understand her and her refusal to speak."
He reached up to itch his head, thinking on what he should say next. It was true, Nessa wasn't an expert at offering comfort, but Milo didn't need much. He was an optimistic sort; he knew he would find Sonia soon. But, for now, it was best to turn his attention to other channels. "Would you like to go for a walk?" He asked, looking over at Nessa. "Or a flight?"

If her face could have turned any other color than green it would have, but she wasn't sure it could do anything but go a deeper green. Nessa was pretty much flightless. As a kid she'd been teased by her brothers and sisters when she'd tried flying and ever since she hadn't the confidence to try it again. Afraid she would only embarass herself in front of Milo she shook her head.
"A walk sounds fine. I'm uhh.. not too big on the flying thing..." Nessa finished her apple and then turned back to Milo. "So are we just wandering or did you have somewhere in mind?"

He bobbed his head, getting onto all four clawed feet. "All right; a walk, then." And he set off in no direction in particular, folding his wings at his sides. "Wandering around the valley, so I suppose the correct answer would be both yes and no," he said with a flick of his tail. "I'm hoping to explore everywhere I can in hopes of finding Sonia."
He continued walking, his amber eyes scanning their surroundings as they went. His mind suddenly took in what she had said, and he turned to look at her. "Not too big on flying? It's one of our essential skills. I fly to get fruits high up on the trees for our nequus friends who are unable to reach them. It's also nice to be able to fly with them, too," he said with a nod and a smile. "Are you able to fly? I could teach you how, if you'd like."

Nessa blushed even deeper. She wasn't sure her face changed in color but she was definately embarrased. Dang she should have never mentioned the flying thing. Why had she gone and done that? What kind of Shrila couldn't fly? Oh man now what had she gone and gotten herself into? Maybe she could pretend she was afraid of heights or had some sort of weird bone injury? Yeah right. Like Milo would really believe that. Maybe she could try though. Then again she'd be even more embarrased when he realised she was lying to him. Not if he realised, no he was too smart for that. She was sure he would automatically spot her lie. As it was he had sensed something wrong with her not being big on flying.
As she gently ruffled her feathers, Nessa took a deep breath and then spoke what she had not said for years. "To be honest I really don't know how to fly. I tried once when I was little. My older siblings wanted me to fly and when i tried and failed they only laughed at me and told me how pathetic I was. Ever since then I haven't tried to fly again." The green Shrila looked down at the grass and studied a small beetle as it made its way from blade to blade in search of its next meal.

He could immediately sense that he'd touched upon a tender point when it took her a bit to answer. He paused and turned to listen to her statement, then ruffled his wings a bit. "Well, it seems to me your siblings weren't very encouraging to you," he said, turning to walk back towards her a few paces. "Every able-bodied Shrila can fly, and I'm sure you can, too. As I said, I could teach you, if you want," he said with a nod.
Surely she could fly, if the only problem was lack of practice. It was understandable, in his opinion, to not be too keen on flying when the last attempt, the first at that, had failed and been harshly criticized. Perhaps with a few tips and a bit of encouragement, Nessa would be able to fly better than her insulting siblings. "I don't think it's that you can't fly, it's that you don't know how. If your siblings were kinder they could have taught you how and so saved you from a flightless part of your life you otherwise could have avoided. It's fairly easy to fly, especially for us Shrila. We're much smaller than a nequus, and don't have nearly as much bulk and such to carry around," he explained with a nod.

The green Shrila nodded. Milo made her feel better but she was still rather nervous. Then again she realised now that she had been foolish to have let her siblings push her around. Oh what if she was afraid of heights though? She had never really been up high anywhere. What if she fell again? Or if she was just unable to fly? Maybe she wasn't ever meant to. Oh and why did she have to keep bringing these things up. Finally someone was being nice to her and offering their help and she acted like a complete chicken. No she would fly and Milo would help her to do it.

Her silence didn't put him off; if anything, it was a yes, in his opinion. "Okay," he said, prancing off a few paces to a good flat area of grass. He hesitated, unsure of how to instruct her. He had never taught anyone how to fly before, and he couldn't remember quite how his parents had gone about teaching him how to, either. "Hmm..."
"Oh!" He said, after a pause, flicking his tufted tail. "The first thing you must do," he began as he stretched out his wings, "is to get used to flapping your wings. You can glide while in the air as well, but its best to know your wings can handle the task." And, to demonstrate, he began to slowly flap his own wings, trying to keep his claws firmly rooted to the ground. "Now, if you start to float upwards because of your wings, that's good," he said, allowing his wings to pump faster, sending his thin body a few inches off the ground before he stopped, folding them again, and his amber eyes turned to the green creature before him. "We'll get into full-scale flying later on, as it's best to take it little by little. You try it now."

Nessa shook a little with nerves but slowly she began to move her wings up and down. The green shrila felt rather ridiculous doing so but as she did she could feel the weight of the wind both beneath her wings and a slight pressure pushing down upon them. As she continued to flap her wings she found a suitable rhythm and began to flap slightly harder. As she pushed the wind down she began to gently lift upwards.

Milo sat on his haunches and watched, flexing his talons. The orange claws dug into the earth, though he didn't notice much; he was too busy studying Nessa's progress. As she began to float a bit, a grin broke out onto the white shrila's face. "Wonderful, wonderful!" He said, trotting over and flicking his tufted tail. "Marvelous! I think you're doing quite well so far," he beamed, then looked around.
"Hmm..." He glanced around, looking for any trees that might be in the way, and thought for a moment. "Ah!" Exclaimed the tribal-patterned familiar with a grin. "Next, we'll work on gliding. Very important, very important," he said, trotting over next to Nessa and spreading his clawed feet apart. "First," he began, "you must make sure there are no trees or anything in your way. Wouldn't want to hit any of those head-first, it's not very fun. And before you ask, yes, I learned that first-hand." He pointed with a claw to his head, grinning. "Next, for our intents and purposes, fold your wings. It'll probably be easier like this at first until you're sure you can hold your wings steady." And with that, he folded his feathered wings against his sides. "Now, when you're ready," he said, and quickly trotted backwards several yards, "simply run--" He began racing forward as fast as possible, "-- spread your wings, and jump as high as you can!"
And with that, he unfolded his wings and leapt several feet into the air. He held his wings outspread and curled his talons beneath him, allowing the wind to blow beneath his wings. "No flapping yet, just gliding. You must make sure your wings stay straight." He glided past her, just a bit above eye-level, and landed smoothly several feet ahead of her. He turned and shook himself off and, with a flick of his tufted tail, offered her a grin. "Now, your turn!"

So far flapping hadn't been too bad and gliding didn't sound too hard either. Taking his advice to heart she looked for a good straight path without any trees. The best she could find was one with a tree slightly off to the right. However, as long as she kept her wings straight as he had said she should be fine. Though would she have enough running room? and what if she fell fat on her face with her beak stuck in the ground? Oh that would be so humiliating. Alone was one thing but infront of another Shrilal?
Well if she was going to learn anything she couldnt do so by standing there and thinking of all the possible 'what ifs' that she could. Slowly she inhaled and exhaled and then made a running start. She was bit slow at first but managed to pick up some speed as she moved further along. Finally when she felt as if she couldn't go any faster she took a jump into the air and spread her wings. She was a bit wobbly at first and almost fell out of the air as fast as she had reached it but she managed to balance herself just in time.
The joy she felt at being in the air couldn't be compared to anything else. The wind ruffling through her feathers and, even though she was afraid of hieghts, it really wasn't too bad. She turned her head to look at Milo and see what he though. Which was a mistake. In turning her head she also turned her wings slightly and started to vear off to the right. It was only after she ran headlong into the tree that she realized what she had done.

He watched with approving eyes as she picked up speed and glided by, but started as she headed towards the tree. "Be careful! Look--" BAM. Oh dear, too late. He peeked through his claws (as he had covered his eyes like the brave man he was) and sighed slightly before trotting over fairly quickly to check her over. "Are you alright, Nessa?" He asked as he picked her hat up from the ground, dusted it off, and handed it to her. "That was a magnificent first try. Though, I must advise you to look only at where you're headed. If you look one way, you lean that way. Only with much practice can you keep your path straight while looking elsewhere."
Determined to get her to try it again, he held his taloned feet out palms-out. "Hold on," he said, before swiftly jumping into the air and gliding a little ways off, flapping occasionally to ensure he didn't land prematurely. Satisfied with the distance as well as clear path, he quickly spun in mid-air and retracted his wings, landing quickly and precisely upon a soft patch of grass. "Now then," he began, speaking louder so she could hear him. "Try it once more, and this time head straight for me, if you can. That way, your eyes won't wander elsewhere." As an afterthought, he outstretched his wings and waved his thin arms in the air with a grin. "I can do this, too, if it will help keep your gaze straight!"

Nessa sighed as she looked up at him. Her head swam temporarily as she tried to regain her focus. She also had quite a headache which she feared wouldn't be going away any time soon. While she sat there she began munching on an apple as she listened to what he had to say and she watched where he was going. Once he had finished she tossed her apple aside and tried once more. This time she was determined not to make a fool out of herself.
She started as she had last time and began running. It was easier to pick up now than it had been originally. Now that she had done it once it seemed to come with ease. Within moments she was up in the air and gliding towards him. However, this time, she did not look to the side but only straight ahead. There would be plenty of time to look later when she was much more comfortable with her wings. Just as the last time she felt the joy of flying. The find under her wings barely supporting her and she didn't even have to make the slightest effort.
Nessa began to slow and slightly angle herself towards the ground as she had seen Milo do. The way he had landed had made it look as if it was just as easy as gliding. She was wrong. As she touched ground she went tumbling. Not the smoothest of landings but at least she hadn't crashed head first into a tree this time.
