Lin laughed, because she had told Earendil that, because at the time she had been blindsided that the two had gotten married. To be fair to an extent the two hadn't changed at all.
"You have to understand first, Halmir, after the last war became a bit quirky, and while he's a great fighter and a serious soldier when it comes down to it. Back then, when his usual self he can be easily distracted. Elros would always pair Halmir and Arthael together on patrols because of this, she seemed to be the only person who can keep him on track."
She now wondered if it was because the two just worked well together and actually had love and high respect for each other.
"When I was really little, I went to Haven during the Gaian holiday of Christmas to give everyone candy, because it is a tradition to give gifts during Christmas. I ran into the two while they were on patrol and Halmir was... being himself. You see, my father founded Haven and Halmir was joking on how it was nice that someone remembered them all the way out there. Arthael felt it was really improper of him to joke about that, and slugged him in the jaw. I probably should have realized something was going on, because he took that very well. He later tried to follow me back to the Ranch but Arthael dragged him off in the other direction to finish their patrol... having pulling him off the snow bank he was standing on."
She looked very thought of on that one.
"That pretty much described their relationship. Halmir's quirkness needed to be reined in sometimes and Arthael needed someone who could lighten things up."

Luk had to admit, Earendil was right: it was a funny story. He laughed heartily.
"But they are happy together, yes?" he smiled. "That is after all what is important."

"Very happy," Lin agreed remembering all the times she had visited the two.
It was fun to visit them whenever it was possible.
"I wonder what they're doing now that things are peaceful..."
Especially since their son's family lived in the area.

"If things are peaceful," Earendil reminded Lin. "Remember, the last time we were there, they were preparing to invade the Human Southland."
At Luk's startled look, he explained. "Though the slavery problem in the north with the dwarfs was finished, the humans still have elven children as captives. The elves, when we left, were preparing to raid the human lands and take their children back."
Luk frowned. "Why do the people do these things?" he asked. "I don't understand it."

"Actually when we left they were in negotiations with the Human King," Lin corrected, "While there might still be a raid, it might not be a full invasion that could lead to a small war."
She really hoped it wouldn't come to that, that was not something she wanted to see for the lands she had come to love.
"And I wish I knew, trust me I do. It doesn't make much sense, but... there are still issues."
Nevermind the ones involving marriage and race.

"One thing you have to understand, Luk," Earendil said cautiously, "is that the other lands we know of ... none of them are like your land. We do not have the technology that you have, and we don't live in the peace that you do. To my knowledge, there haven't been any elven-human relations, and they are frowned upon. There are fights at the mere suggestion of it. Not everyone feels that way, of course, but it is the predominant prejudice."
"That makes no sense." Luk shook his head slowly.

Lin shrugged, "We can't make sense of it neither. It's... just the way it is. I have no other way of describing it."
How could she describe something that didn't even make sense to her? She was Gaian, marrying other races were the norm, look at her parents.

"That does beg the question, though," Luk said slowly, looking from Lin to Earendil and back. "If mixed marriages are unheard of ... then what does that say about you two?"
Earendil chuckled. "First off, that we're not married," he grinned, silently adding, yet. "And secondly, that we just plain don't care about what other people say or think. To be honest, I liked the look of your land - the people, I mean. The equality. The way everything and everyone is accepted. There are just a lot of others who would not like it."
"Such as your father," Haldia spoke up.
Earendil flushed. "Yes, like him," he agreed, though it was clear he was still embarrassed by his father's beliefs.

"Yes yes, we know about that, give the man time, if he managed to lighten up after several decades just a tad, give it several more," Lin replied.
True, she may have times have issues with Ruel, but she was certain that he could change. After all he stopped being a jerk to Elnara, and after how many years he finally learned Common Tongue.
"At any rate, not only do we not care, but it's a norm where I originate from. My mother is an angel, my father is human, and between them they've adopted a lot of children who are one, or the other, or neither..."
Not that one could tell by looking at some of her siblings, but she was pretty sure it would be highly inaccurate to call Mia or Helen human.

Luk nodded. "Well then. Good for you. And good for your family."
It was another hour before they reached the city. Gone were the walls, and the old city itself had almost vanished. Most of the new city was complete, or in the process of being completed.
"Looks like they got quite a bit done while we were gone," Earendil smiled, quite pleased with the progress that had been made.
"Look!" Amalirahc beamed, pointing. "There's our friends!"
Leyenda laughed and held her hand out for her son's bag. "Go ahead," she told him with a warm smile. "Be back at the castle by dinner time, though."
"Okay!" And Amalirahc ran off to go tell his friends all about the places he'd seen.

Miyuki looked at her mommy and ada eagerly, "Can I go too please?"
She wanted to go see her friends too, while it was fun and all being on the trip she did miss playing with other children.
Lin nodded, if it got Miyuki to burn off all that energy she was all for it, "Just as Leyenda said, be back in time for dinner."
She was old enough to go off on her own and play and she wasn't as clingly as before. Most of the time.

Earendil chuckled softly. "Come. We will be at the castle shortly. There, we can put our things away and then we can take you to meet Rhea."
Luk smiled gratefully. "Thank you," he murmured. "You are very thoughtful."

Lin smiled, "It's been quite a trip, and it was a bit more crowded than what we're use to."
Even having just two extra guests had really pushed the rooming situation to the limit.

"And for myself," Luk admitted. "We have many people in our land, but I have lived on my own for so long I'm not used to crowds."
He looked back over his shoulder in the direction of the docks. "And I don't know if it's just me, but it seemed like there were far too many crewmen, even for a ship of that size ..."

"The Sky Elves were on the ship to learn how to sail," Lin explained, "So while the trip to Nauros was purely for visitation for some of us, it was also a change to let them experience sailing in a practical sense."
So not everyone was there as part of the regular crew.
"I assure you, when we head back to the Four Lands it will not be that crowded."
