"Shieldon use Protect!" Roark ordered the moment Jake ordered for a Water Gun. The rock type gym leader did not want his pokemon to get hit by the attack, even if his defense was pretty high. He would have to be careful this battle since he had been right about this pokemon knowing a water type move.

On the ground the Shieldon covered himself with the green aura that would protect him from the nasty looking water attack. There had once been a time when he hadn't minded water so much but ever since he had been brought to this strange time he had strongly disliked it. Looking at his opponent Shieldon snorted wishing he could do something other then just guard this attack but he wanted to stay dry even more.

~~~~~~~
"Well you two seem to be fairly evenly matched." Tony said out loud as he watched the two trainers stare each other down. They both apparently didn't like that comment to much since the point of a battle was to strive to achieve ones goals and that goal was winning here.
"Ace use your Mach Punch again!"
"Sparky blast them away with another Spark attack!"
Both of the pokemon sprung into action charging at each other ready to take the other one out. Ace was easily the more agile of the two and using that to his advantage the ape like pokemon leapt into the air flipping around so he was now behind the Luxio and let his fist fly. The Luxio though wasn't to be under estimated and his body crackled as electricity surged through him blasting Ace in the chest just as the electric pokemon fell to the ground from the force of the Monferno's punch.
This exchange wasn't quite over yet though, as Ace got up he felt his muscles seize up and he couldn't move for a second. His eyes widened as his opponent realized that and decided to take advantage of his state.
"All right Bite him while you can!" Joe shouted as his pokemon picked himself up.
Ace let out a cry of pain as the Luxio's strong jaws clamped around his midsection. This was not fun at all! Though it seemed like the pain had finally cut through to him and his muscles allowed him to move again. The Monferno decided to make things every uncomfortable for the Spark pokemon. Summoning the fire within him Ace let out a powerful looking Ember attack right in the Luxio's face. The other pokemon quickly let go of the Monferno and backed away doing its best to paw the flames out that were on its head now, no doubt that it would be burned now.
'Giga Drain, how sneaky!' Roxanne thought, still smiling to herself. It always pleased her whenever a challenger had planned ahead. The greenish orbs, though wavering slightly as they were battered by the Sandstorm, pushed through and slammed into Onix's side, causing him to roar in pain. They reappeared a moment later, looking brighter and healthier than before as they returned to the ghost/poison-type. Roxanne winced, knowing that it hurt the rock-type a lot, but it hadn't been nearly as damaging as it could have thanks to the Sandstorm boosting Onix's special defense.
"Fight back with a Rock Throw," she called out, and Onix complied, letting out a loud roar as he slashed his heavy tail against the rocky battlefield, sending a barrage of rocks raining down on the Gastly.
Riza frowned as she listened to Amy's story, looking in the direction the man had gone off in before she looked back at the younger girl, not entirely sure how to react now that she new more of the story. "There are a lot of bad people out there in the world," she said, looking down at her Quilava. "There's not a whole lot we can do about it, but it was pretty brave of you to stand up to him," she added. Eris barked sharply to show her agreement. Riza checked her watch. There was still some time before they had to head over to the hall. "Let's go over to that cute little coffee shop by the Contest Hall," she suggested. "Their sign says they have the most delicious hot cocoa in all of Kanto and Johto. My treat," she added, still unsure of what about Amy she liked so much. Maybe it was because she still seemed naive, or maybe it was some big-sister instinct, but either way she wanted to help Amy clear her mind before the contest. After all, since they'd be competing against each other they'd be rivals, and Riza wanted her rivals to be at the top of their game.
"Come on, Kord! Wake up!" Katie shouted, cupping her hands over her mouth like a megaphone. Even though the Elekid resisted flying-type moves, Katie knew that if he didn't wake up the damage would rack up and he'd faint before he could do a thing. The Hoothoot gave one more vicious peck to the electric-type's head, hooting sharply as a sudden wave of static electricity burst from between the Elekid's prongs and struck the owl Pokemon, rendering it paralyzed. The Hoothoot cried out and staggered backwards, barely managing to remain standing on a single leg. It seemed reluctant to swap legs as it wasn't sure it would be able to remain standing. Kord, on the other hand, remained sound asleep, a small grin etched on his face as he dreamed of growing stronger and stronger.
"Oh no, Hooty!" Alexandra cried, not liking the fact that her Hoothoot had been paralyzed, though she looked to her Chatot, who seemed to be faring quite well against the Buizel. "Fury Attack!" she shouted. The Music note Pokemon flapped its wings and flew forward, thrusting its beak forward and landing several sharp pecks to Miles' body. The Buizel cried out in pain and hopped back, growling fiercely.
"Miles, fight back with a Swift attack!" Katie called. Normally the attack would strike both opponents unerringly but unfortunately for Miles he and the Chatot were too far away from Kord and Hooty for the attack to go that far. The Buizel took a step forward and pivoted sharply, his tail slashing the air and sending out a shower of shiny gold stars in its wake. 'Miles' attacks are so pretty, and he's so agile. He'd probably be quite good at contests,' she thought idly as the stars sped through the air and struck the Chatot.
The girl looked up to Riza, feeling as though she would do something drastic if she looked back to the retreating figure. "Thank you," she said with a much softer tone, offering both the coordinator and her Quilava a little smile. She reminds me of Cindy... I wonder how Scarlet's doing... she thought briefly, and looked back to Riza.
"That sounds really good right now," Amy admitted with a little laugh, glad for the subject change. "Thanks." She began to walk toward the Contest Hall, deciding she would call her redheaded friend sometime soon. And it'd be rude not to call Cyan, too... she thought as her smile faded a bit. Finally, her eyes flickered back to Riza, and the smile blossomed once more. The girl's voice had much more cheer it when she spoke. "You really do look pretty. Where'd you get your hair done?"
Miharu looked on as the Gastly was recalled, offering a slight smile in Scarlet's direction. She'd been a trainer long enough by now to see that the Ghost/Poison-type had potential, and she wondered how long Scarlet had been out on his own as the Quilava trotted out onto the battlefield. Mori's gaze shifted briefly to her fellow Fire-type then back to the butterfly, impressed that he was still flying strong even after he'd been burned. The Ponyta whinnied and stamped her hooves on the ground, eagerly awaiting a command.
The green-haired girl giggled at the Ponyta's enthusiasm, glad they seemed to be working well together as a team. This is our first real battle together, she thought, recalling all the training they'd done back on Cianwood. Jett called for another Stun Spore, and Miharu quickly realized that the angle the Beautifly was coming in on would make it impossible to evade. "I guess we'll have to take a little bit of collateral damage," she murmured to herself, pointing at Aerosmith. "Mori, Flamethrower," she said, short and sweet. The Ponyta neighed again, her mane and tail flaring up brightly. She reared back and loosed a powerful jet of fire at the butterfly, subsequently finding herself (or the parts of her that weren't on fire, anyway) coated with a fine layer of golden dust in the process.
“Hey kid, wake up, I gave you a half-hour extra to sleep. You gotta get ready for the Bug Catching Contest,” the guard from the night before said.
Peine just turned to the other side and gave the guard the finger. If there was one thing that Peine liked, it was his sleep, and he didn’t enjoy being woken up by anyone.
“Kid, I’ll have the Scyther go out on you if you don’t get up soon. Your Pokemon got up before you,” the guard said pointing to Sel, who was walking over to the two humans as he spoke. Sel motioned for the guard to step to the side. She then put her claw back and it started to get icy. Sel punched Peine with the Ice Punch then, which seemed to wake him up.
“What the heck Sel!?!?” the boy yelled as he jumped out of his sleeping bag. “I could’ve woken up on my own.”
“Actually, I let you sleep longer, and you still didn’t get up,” the guard said. “You’re going to be late for the registration. You want to enter, don’t you?”
“Oh ya, the bug catching contest…I should get up shouldn’t I…” Peine rolled up his sleeping bag and put it in his backpack and then motioned for Sel to follow him into the main gate. As he walked into the main gate, he saw a bunch of Bug Catchers and collectors comparing Pokemon. The words “my Pokemon is better than yours” and “I’m going to beat you all” filled the room. ‘Son of a b***h I think I’m entering the largest nerd competition in the world. Not a single girl here…’ The guard who was watching over Peine made it back to the front desk and gave him a pen and some paper.
“Here’s the form to fill out. Just a waiver signing that you’re only going to catch one Pokemon, that all damages done to the park by you are your responsibility, and any damages done to you aren’t our problem. The usual stuff,” the guard said with a smirk. “And if you have two or more Pokemon, you have to deposit them in your PC or let me hold onto them, you can only use one.”
“Thanks,” Peine said as he took the pen and pencil. “Don’t worry about that, Sel’s my only Pokemon, besides the few I have at home, but they aren’t for battling.” Peine sat down, filled out the form, and signed it at the end. ‘That was a big waste of time…’ “Here you go sir.”
“Thank you, now we’re starting right now since you were the last person we were waiting for here are your twenty park balls, don’t use any other kinds of pokeballs during the competition, and please, have fun.”
The doors opened and Peine, Sel, and the other bug catchers sprinted out to see who is the best bug catcher out of them all.
Sam focused on the Quilava as it walked onto the field. She was excited since it seemed to be such an obvious type advantage, but she knew to remain wary. She didn't know how strong the Quilava was, and that meant taking no chances.
"Star, use Surf!" Star nodded, before summoning a large amount of water, and building a wave that hovered above the Quilava before breaking and falling straight for the Fire Pokemon.
Crap! Jett thought, knowing this was it for the Butterfly Pokemon. The Flamethrower hit dead on, but Aerosmith refused to make any embarassing shrieks or anything from the sort. As it ended, he managed to offer that firey horse of doom and its trainer the best glare a swiftly fainting Beautifly could give.
"You did great," Jett called as he recalled his little trooper. He grinned at the Pokeball. "Really. Thanks, Aerosmith." He glanced to Cindy as she entered the fray and realized that there was still that awful type match-up he wanted to prevent in the first place. Not sure we're going to necessarily win this one... Jett thought as he brought out his next Pokeball. "Athena, let's show them what we've got!"
The Hoothoot emerged and promptly began to swift feet, her wide eyes examining the enemies. A fire horse and some bipedal mud fish... thing. Finally, she let out a shrill hoot and readied herself for battle.
"Use Hypnosis!" Jett called, pointing to Star. He hoped there wasn't a rule about suddenly switching opponents, but this was sort of a team thing and if he could help out Scarlet, it'd be better for all of them. So the Owl Pokemon leapt forward as her eyes glowed, releasing several rings that shot right for the Marshtomp, hopefully putting it right to sleep.
If only there were words to describe the expression of mixed terror and shock that instantly appeared on Scarlet and Cindy’s face when they heard the word ‘Surf’. It was a super powerful move, the opinion of some being that it was the most useful water type move, a move that could swamp an entire battlefield in sheer liquid death. Fortunately, Jett’s call for hypnosis snapped him out of it.
This was a team battle that called for strategy, and he sure as hell didn’t wanna bring his new partner down. Or get Cindy hit with a giant tidal wave.
“Cindy! Quick attack on that Ponyta!”
Cindy barked in agreement, her body disappearing in a blur of black and orange, zooming in a tackle toward the paralyzed fire horse. It was Scarlet’s hope that the terrible fish creature would fall asleep and finish taking the brunt of Terumi’s awful little present, but if not, its move would probably wipe out half the combatants on the field, in part thanks to Cindy’s new proximity to the fire horse.
It’s been five minutes since the catching contest has started, and Peine and Sel weren’t having the best of luck. The two sprinted around the field of the National Park to try to find one bug-type that interested them. Unlike the bug catchers who were trying to catch every Pokemon that they saw, Peine and Sel had one goal. Before the competition, when he was filling out the forms, an available Pokemon list had to be read. Peine was intrigued by the fact that Scyther could be found here, and it was the only Pokemon that he wanted. Though all he could find were Metapod. “I freaking’ hate Metapods!!” Peine screamed as he found his fifth of the day. “Sel, Ice punch to knock it out, then let’s continue,” Peine yelled. Sel’s claw turned icy as it knocked out the Metapod, and then followed Peine. ‘The Scyther’s got to be here somewhere…’
Another five minutes and pass, Peine and Sel seeing many more Pokemon other than Metapod. Though none of them were Scyther, they were among the Kakuna, Weedle, and Caterpie variety. The boy was practically fuming when he found another Weedle, which like the rest, was ice punched for the knock out.
“Ten minutes to go contestants, ten minutes to go,” the intercom informed the trainers. Most of them looked up and then walked towards the exit, them being happy with their captures, Peine being the only person left.
“Why me??” he asked himself as he looked down in shame.
"Okay! Let's do this!" Laichi yells as her opponent's pokeball is in mid air.
A glow shoots from the pokeball. With the crowds attention now on this one battle, screams and hollars are heard from children, other trainers, and even business workers and construction workers alike.
"Go Onix!" The Hooded boy yells as the small laser light grows into a tremendous rock snake beast.
Laichi and Zii for their first time look up at the gargantuan pokemon with a feeling of regret.
"Zii, you ever battled a pokemon that big?" Laichi asks.
Zii shakes his head as he cries inside. He has no idea on how he will take down the towering stones. In his history of fighting pokemon he has always been the tallest pokemon. The tables have turned and neither Zii or Laichi like outcome.
"Zii let's do this!" Laichi yells, as Onix is commanded to Tackle.
"Dodge it with quick attack and see if we can draw blood from a stone!"
Onix is taller, stronger, and can endure much more than Zii. But, Zii has learned already, he is faster. Zii jumps as Onix creates a small crater where he slams into the ground. Zii flips onto the side of a building and with a quick release, pushes himself at Onix. He lands a solid kick.
"...Zan!" Zii growls while jumping off the stone snake.
Laichi's smile of victory seems to fade as she notices that kick seemed to weaken Zii's legs. She can only imagine the feel of putting all your force into a boulder.
In a nervous state, and odds against Laichi and Zii, Laichi still will not give up.
"It's just the first round Zii! We've climbed mountains before! Let's show this moving fortress what we are made of..." Laichi yells with determination returning to her voice.
"This is going to be tough..." Laichi whispers to herself.
Star lost focus as she saw the blue rings heading towards her. She let the Surf go too early, and it crashed upon the field, spilling water everywhere but missing it's initial target. She noticed the water puddling around the two Fire Pokemon, and vaguely hoped she hadn't hurt Mori too bad by accident. Star began dodging the blue rings, but as she sidestepped she felt a gnawing pain in her body.
Sam saw Star clutching at her sides as she ran from the Hypnosis. 'That Curse sure is a pain...' she thought to herself. She looked to Jett and Scarlet, who had evidently realized their type disadvantage and switch opponents. 'Good for them. Smart. But typing alone won't win the day. I should still attack the Quilava though. Star's Ground moves are sure to miss.' Sam called to Miharu.
"Hey, nice job with the Beautifly, can Mori handle the Hoothoot? I hope Star didn't get her too wet!" Sam looked down at her own feet to see water traveling up her jeans. 'Oh joy....' she thought.
This time, Kasiya was only vaguely aware of the fact that Sasha was behind her, though every now and then she'd look over her shoulder. The pink-haired girl appeared to be attempting to rest, and Kasiya smiled, happy that Sasha was able to do so. I sure have a strange, yet wonderful assortment of friends, she thought, grinning. She glanced over to Keegan, amazed that she and him were still on speaking terms even after everything that had happened between them, and even more so that he was managing to keep the very angry-sounding Skarmory in check. She glanced back even further, her gaze falling on the purple-haired girl that was Mitsu. Mitsu had been one of the first people she'd met after she'd started her Pokemon adventure, and even though they weren't as close now as they had been back then, she still regarded Mitsu as one of her best friends. Then, there was Kilik. Back when she first met Kilik, she wouldn't have believed anyone if they'd told her that down the line, she'd consider him to be not only a strong ally, but a good friend as well. She could still clearly picture that night on the roof of the Silph Co building when she, Nina, Sabrina, and Jaeshan (who'd more or less been dragged along) had been facing Kilik, a cold glimmer in his eye as he threatened to send out a signal that would bring hundreds of Rocket grunts swarming in on them. She shuddered to think of it, still a bit amazed at how they'd managed to get past that to where they were today. Of course, riding with her was Sasha, whom she'd met the day after the Silph Co incident in Saffron City. They'd become friends almost instantly, and their Pokemon, too, and she knew that her journey would have been a lot duller without the pink-haired, French vixen around.
Kasiya's gaze then moved forward, her blue eyes settling on the mighty Charizard leading the way. Last but certainly not least was Mike, also someone she'd known since her earliest days as a trainer. The first time she'd ever seen the brown-haired boy was when he was running full-tilt towards the Pokemon Center, his butt on fire thanks to a rather amused then-Charmander named Nitro. Kasiya smiled fondly at the memory, though the first time she'd spoken to Mike had been on the phone, when he'd answered Mitsu's PokeNav. It's amazing how far we've come, she thought, thinking back to how Nitro had evolved into a Charmeleon to protect her from Hiro, at that point a hot-headed and distrustful young Growlithe, to all the double battles they'd fought together, including the Five Island incident. She'd never forget the double-evolution that occurred during their training match - Nitro versus Fang. The duo had been fighting tirelessly until they backed off from one another and evolved into their final forms, Charizard and Crobat. And of course, she'd never be able to forget how Mike had gone out of his way to rescue her from the Rocket Base in Celadon City, or how they'd fought side by side during the Rocket attack at the Cherry Blossom Festival and their invasion of the Viridian City base to rescue Nina. So many memories over such a short time.
Kasiya snapped out of her daydream as the somewhat-familiar volcano came into view, and she nudged Sirrus to carefully follow Nitro's descent. The Flygon touched own gently and Kasiya dismounted with Sasha's help, kissing the dragon on the nose to thank him before recalling him into his Pokeball. She glanced around the area, as they'd landed behind the Lavaridge gym instead of near the Pokemon Center, though for once Kasiya caught on quickly, realizing that Mike didn't want to be recognized by the citizens of his hometown. She looked to Keegan as well, figuring he would be the best candidate to take over the lead at this point and without even thinking about it she grabbed Sasha's hand, feeling a lot more calm with the pink-haired girl at her side as they followed after the redhead.
Jake looked on with wide eyes as Bibarel's Water Gun, which he thought had looked pretty powerful, was easily deflected by the Shieldon's protective barrier. I guess it won't be as simple as that, he thought, though he was a little glad that Roark intended to make this a challenge for him. A familiar rush of adrenaline started pumping through his veins as he studied the situation. He recalled somehow that Protect blocked all damages, but there was something else about it that he couldn't quite put his finger on.
Well, we could either try another Water Gun, or we could take the moment to bolster our defenses again, he mused, glancing to Bibarel. He decided on the latter, and nodded to Bibarel. "Go ahead and use another Defense Curl," he said.
Bibarel didn't like taking the defensive but she did, tucking her legs and tail in closer to her body to conceal her weak spots. She knew the strange, rock and metal Pokemon in front of her couldn't hide behind that Protect forever.
Flannery couldn't help but cross her fingers behind her back as Torkoal's Flamethrower slammed a direct hit into the Hariyama's chest, and even with its Thick Fat ability found itself staggering back. Its upper body was now blackened quite a bit, but it was still standing, paralysis and all. Dammit! Flannery thought, gritting her teeth. Why wont this thing fall down?! Robbie called for a set of Arm Thrusts, but the Fighting-type could not fight off the paralysis this round, and thus was unable to move even an inch forward. Seeing an opening to score some massive damage, Flannery leaned forward on the balls of her feet. "Torkoal! Get 'em now!" she hollered. "Overheat!"
The tortoise threw his head back, the coals in his back glowing brighter and brighter as he summoned the energy to bring forth the powerful attack. With a loud growl, he unleashed the tremendous fireball, both he and Flannery watching as it sped through the air and slammed directly into the Hariyama. It let out a bellow of pain and toppled over backwards, unable to continue battling. "Yes!" Flannery cheered, pumping her fist into the air. She was too busy celebrating her win over the Arm Thrust Pokemon to notice that Torkoal was breathing heavily, as Overheat always took a lot out of him. Robbie congratulated the gym leader for bringing down his second Pokemon, recalling it as he sent out his third, a smallish, blue bird with bright red markings - a Swellow.
"Onix Bide!" The Hooded Boy says while growing a smirk across his face.
"Zii, dodge and scratch Onix's eyes out! Go for the weak area!" Laichi says.
The crowds cheer as the match has progressed past the first round. Laichi feels this city has seen this Onix fight before. He has home turf advantage, and Laichi does not like this knowledge. She wishes ignorance was a part of this match.
Zii dives out of the way and lands on all fours, where he squats and shoots himself toward the face of Onix. Onix narrows his eyes and the Hooded boy laughs as Zii fell into a trap.
"Zii watch out!" Laichi screams.
Onix ducks quicker than Zii could understand. Zii started as the fastest pokemon. It took him a mere second to realize: Onix was acting slow to knock Zii off his game.
Zii would rather have Laichi punch him in the stomach with a pair of stone gloves instead of what happens to him now. Onix wraps himself around Zii and crushes the Zangoose.
"Scratch your way out of that! Hurry Zii!" Laichi screams, she is now competing against the crowds cheering. Laichi turns, "Shut up! You filthy whismer loving loudmouths!"
Of course, nobody heard her. She turns around to watch Zii scratching as much as he can to no avail. She goes back in her mind to every tactic they have come up with and every training mission they survived. There has never been even one event where Zii, or Laichi was stuck. She did not know what to do.
Zii screams in pain while Onix continues to crush him. Laichi can no longer hear the screams of the crowds. She can no longer hear her opponent laughing. She can only hear Zii's screams, and her heart beating,
Zii falls to the ground as Onix releases him. There was no threat anymore. Zii has feinted. Laichi shuffles over to Zii with tears running down her cheeks. Their first loss. Laichi does not like losing. She feels useless, like now.
"Zii... I did not know what to do. I'm sorry." She whispers to him while wiping a tear from her eyes.
The hooded boy rides away on top of his Onix. He did not care about the cash reward. This comes to Laichi instantly: He had a purpose of humiliating Zii.
"I will bury him, and his Onix too. Return Zii, lets get you treated!"
She runs through the crowds toward the Pokemon Center.
Peine started to rush, trying to find a bug Pokemon that he liked. Instead of fighting them to level up Sel, he just ran right by them. Most of them couldn’t even move on their own anyway so it wasn’t the toughest thing in the world. After a minute or two of running, they go to the center of the field, where the grass was shorter, like something or someone had cut it. A green blur went by them, knocking Peine and Sel of their balance. The figure stopped, and Peine could see it was a Scyther. ‘Bingo.’ “Sel, use your taunt!!” Peine ordered his Pokemon with confidence. ‘Let’s not let him get any faster than he already is.’
Sel stuck her tongue out at the Scyther, and then yelled some derogatory things in Pokemon. The Scyther, not being so happy with that act rushed towards Sel with a quick attack. Sel jumped over the Scyther, dodging the attack and landing behind it.
“Nice job Sel, use your ice punch!!”
Sel’s claw started to turn very icy and cold. She ran up and struck the back of the Scyther with the super effective hit.
‘Now’s the time.’ Peine took out one of the park balls he was given, and threw it at the Scyther. Though the Scyther still had some fight left in it and used a vacuum wave, slicing the ball in half. Scyther then used another vacuum wave on Sel, who had no time to get out of the way due to the amazing speed of the attack. Peine’s Sharp Claw Pokemon was hurt, though she still stood up with pride.
Sel didn’t even wait for an order of Peine’s it was personal now. She rushed in with a scratch attack while Scyther used a quick attack, the two Pokemon colliding with each other.
Leon was very pleased to see that the Giga Drain attack had been successful, knowing that it was going to be a huge help. In fact, it was honestly the only reason he really had a chance, although he was very confident in Muuma's skills, if Ghos couldn't handle it.
At this point, Ghos was thinning himself out (being a ball of gas was useful in situations like this) to try and free himself completely from the rocks of the Onix's previous attack. He was very unhappy when he was hit by a barrage of rocks and was battered with the sandstorm. Why did moves like that even exist?!
At least now he could actually get himself free. Once again Ghos heard his trainer's voice over the storm, this time calling, "Will-o-wisp!" Well alright, if he said so! A ring of oddly-coloured balls of fire formed around the Gastly, before shooting off towards Onix, and hopefully hitting him just like Giga Drain had! Only, you know, not coming back. That would suck.
