"That's good, because he has long legs," Miyuki replied.

Of course being little, she would say that. She didn't think she could keep up with someone like Luk at all.
PostPosted: Tue Aug 31, 2010 5:59 pm

Celeb laughed at that comment. "Shorter than any of us, other than your mother," he grinned at Miyuki. "Though I have noticed," he added, turning back to Favian, "even the full-blooded elves here aren't as tall as we're used to."

Favian nodded. "Yes, we realized that a long time ago. Khenan is shorter than you are, and I can see that you are young, but he is considered tall for our people."

Khenan, the leader of the Senate, was less than seven feet tall, which was the elven average in the Four Lands and on the other continents.

Lin was surprised she didn't notice that sooner as she was short for a human.

"Huh... interesting...."

Of course she knew comparing heights to those like Elros or Kerlirahc there had been once a time elves were even taller.

Favian chuckled. "Well, there is much about our people that is different from the other lands. But in what little time you have left here, there is no time to even begin to cover it, so let's not bother yet."

They re-entered the city, and again, Earendil admired the stonework above the gate. He looked back at Favian. "So where are we going now?" he asked. "Back to the senate? Or the ship?"

"I thought we might take the long way back to the ship," Favian suggested. "I could take you through the business district, give you a bit of a look into what our people are like - other than just what they look like."

"That would be perfect," Lin agreed.

To see what everyone did from their day to day lives, one more thing to talk about when they got back.

"We get to look at the shops?" Miyuki asked knowing that's where the shops were.
PostPosted: Tue Aug 31, 2010 6:29 pm

"Yes, we get to look at the shops," Earendil chuckled, squeezing Miyuki's hand.

"But don't you have to go back to the senate for the discussion on whether or not Luk should be leaving?" Celeb pointed out.

Flavian shook his head. "It was my suggestion. My vote is already cast. Besides, Luk won't be allowed to vote on this topic, and they need an odd number. Either way it doesn't matter. And I offered to escort you, so that is what I shall do."

And instead of going up the road that they had taken from the senate on their way out of the city, he turned and followed the wall for a while, until they reached another street that led towards the interior of the city. It was lined on both sides with white marble houses with red, rounded shingles. There were yards in front of them - apparently this was the (or a) residential section. Some of the yards had children playing in them, and almost all of the yards had flower gardens of some sort.

They passed several intersections, and finally they reached a large open circle. There was a marble and silver fountain in the center, and all around the outside of the circle were dozens of street vendors with their tables of wares. There were eight other streets leading off of the circle, evenly spaced.

"Welcome to our business area," Favian said warmly, sweeping his arm in a semi-circle as he presented the area. "Look around as you like. If you wish to purchase anything, you'll have to go to the money-changer, as the merchants only take our currency."

Earendil looked at Favian. "Do you have visitors often, then, that you have a money-changer?" he asked.

Favian chuckled. "No, no, you are quite possibly the first. But we are prepared for visitors, you see. We know of many other lands, and many other people, and though we did hope that no one would take notice of us, here you are! So it is good that we thought ahead."

Lin paused and thought of it, it was always good to be prepared, but it was also clear the knew a lot more than most people.

"How many other lands do you know about?" she asked curious.

"Oh, several," Favian answered as they started their little walkabout. He waved his hand. "Observation only, as a rule, but we know of them. About them, not so much. But enough. Enough to know that we are safe here, and for the most part, undiscovered."

He smiled at her as they reached the first stall, a bookseller. The books were leatherbound, and of a high quality. Many of the books were blank, but there were some books that had writing in them - and rather than them being for sale, the offer was that he would copy whatever book the people wanted into whichever new book they wanted it copied into.

"Besides," Favian added, glancing at the books as they passed them by, "as I said, our time is limited. Perhaps on a future visit, if Luk goes with you then when you bring him back. When you have more time. Then we can talk. Or for that matter you could ask him."

Or do both, which was very tempting really Lin thought as she eyed the books as they passed by. Those were quite high quality.

"True...." Lin nodded in agreement, "It would be nice though to be back here when there is more time to spare."

That was what Lin always said, and to be fair it was getting to the point where she would never be able to be everywhere.

"Then consider yourselves as having an open invitation, when you can, and as you can," Favian nodded. "After all, it could be argued that you have relations here - or at least, you know of one who does, and that is enough."

He chuckled as they passed the next table, which was covered with little wooden carvings. In a way, they were like the ones that Ulrich had made for Adanedhel all those decades ago, but they were also different: they weren't just carved and sanded down to be smooth, they were also polished, buffed to a shine, and had a protective coating over them to protect them from rot and decay.

Lin smiled widely, she loved the idea of coming back, of learning of just exploring, "Thank you."

Miyuki looked at the carvings, she was familiar with carvings, her favourite wooden object was her Mommy's box that held her tea things and a hidden little compartment but Mommy wouldn't say where it was.

She had been too young to remember the wooden ones that Ulrich often made. All she knew was that these were really nice.

"See them Sen-sen?" she held up the cat to let her see the wooden items better.

Favian chuckled softly, watching Miyuki and Senka.

"Your daughter is very sweet," he murmured to Lin as they continued on their little trip around the shops. "Very innocent. I think that is one of the reasons we realized so quickly that you and your people are not a threat. Children reflect the people who raise them, after all, and if she could be so sweet and innocent, then what kind of people must you be?"

The next table they passed had an assortment of art materials: special paper, canvases, brushes, paints, charcoal pencils, quills, ink, and more. Next to the table, there were even some easels for sale.

Lin hadn't thought of it that way, but then again she had seen, or heard of not so nice people who had wonderful open minded parents.

"I hadn't thought of it that way... but I can't imagine her being anything but herself."

Meanwhile, it seemed somewhere between being frightened to death and coming here, Senka and Miyuki had bonded more closely than usual (though Sen-sen and Furball were still the norm).

"What's that?"

"Charcoal."

"What's that?"

"Pigment."

"What for?"

"Drawing."

"That's what crayons are for."

"Furball, that's a Gaian thing."

"Oh..."

Favian smiled at Lin. "As it is said, 'A good seed brings forth good fruit, and an evil seed brings forth evil fruit'. It is the same everywhere, through all ages."

The next table they passed was something that Earendil, Celeb and Haldia had never seen before: scattered across the table were small mechanical items of various types. Some music boxes, some wind-up time pieces, and a few toys that, when wound, would do something, like birds with wings that flapped.

One of the music boxes was playing, and Earendil stopped and knelt down to examine it. It was very pretty ... a little square box, stained a light colour, with silver filigree and inlaid with jewels of various colours. The mechanical part of it was hidden inside the box, but on top a carved unicorn spun in slow, melodic circles.

"Amazing," he smiled, watching it for a moment.

Lin's eyes widen at the next time, "Clockwork! You have mechanical objects."

She had always been used to the way things were in the Four Lands. One of that being the tech side of things were very low, which at times she didn't mind (though she wouldn't mind for a good shower every once in a while).

"That looks like Kali's birdie," Miyuki pointed to one pretty bird in particular, "but her birdie didn't move."

Only because Kali hadn't been finished with that project, she had set it aside for her solar power project instead.
