Slow progression only means meaningless quests like this will be easier, as will gathering his own materials later. He could probably continue to grind out some coal to start his weapon smithing as well. The recipies do need coal for every item, so he may just need to stay here for a while longer and try and manage his mining skill. He would probably hate to have to come back here and sit through this again, hitting the walls of this dank cave and getting stone and pretty much nothing else, because that's all that really has been happening for the past hour or something like that. Speaking of hitting the walls of the cave, could he just mine stone off of any rock face he comes across? Was there anywhere else to mine on this floor even? He would have to make sure to check when he got back to town, cuz maybe he arrived late and missed all the digital coal because of the other beta players.

All the coal he needed, now it felt a little better that he was punishing himself for himself.It wasn't that big of a deal now, knowing that he could literally stop at any moment. Does the pick have durability? He hoped not, getting another one of these with no money would not be fun. Maybe he would just go back to the weaponsmith and get another one. The item had no durability so he was probably safe from worring about that. Maybe he could make a better one later that helps with his mining. Maybe one to help him get more materials would be better. If he continued he wouldn't need the aid of a tool to get the materials for his crafting. Hopefully the crafting system wouldn't put him through this much strife, at least the low level stuff.

Rota walked nonchalantly through the undergrowth of the Gloomwood, tanking in all of the unfamiliar surroundings that encompassed the area. He felt as if adventure was around every corner, just waiting to be discovered, and then an unfamiliar p***k in the back of his head told him to move.

The Player noticed his HUD change from the standard one he had seen before, to one that was expanded, and he saw a health bar clipping through the bushes. he had known that combat was dangerous in ALICE since permadeath was what the game was built on, and felt that combat was fast approaching him. he had to move, NOW.

Rota leapt back as a wild boar charged out from behind a bush. He readied his stance, planting himself in the ground, ready to charge that boar back if it decided to attack or not. It was kill or be killed now, and despite a lack of training, he had to maintain his confidence. Without that, failure was assured. He leaned lightly forward, his right hand tightening on his sword, and prepared for what the savage beast had in store for him.

Rota took the initiative, and charged before he noticed the the Boar trying to move. he advanced to the left flank of the beast, grabbing the remainder of the hilt in his left hand as he charged in, and brought it across the ribs of the wild creature, gashing it open.

A red stripe appeared on the boar. The Player took this to mean a successful hit, and to confirm, he saw the health bar drop almost by a third. he couldn't see any numbers of health, but that was a significant drop. he had to keep it up.

After the damage was done, he looked at the Boar, and saw it poising itself to flee back where it came from. He had already done damage to it, and it seemed to want no more. He would not oblige that. He could taste victory, and he wanted to end this as quickly as possible.

Rota charged the Boar once more, the tip of his sword grazing the ground on his left side as he ran to the left flank of the beast one more. With a shout of exertion he hefted his blade diagonally, as if connecting the lines of a right angle to make a triangle between he and the ground, bisecting the already existing wound on the boar. The boar let out a squeal of pain as its flesh was torn open again, albeit less effectively than before. This Boar appeared to be done running. It had gone on the defensive, and had been prepared for this assault.

The Player became nervous for multiple reasons. 1, he had visibly done far less damage to the Boar than last time, meaning that he couldn't count on damage being consistent in this game. 2, He could see that its health bar was just shy of what he could assume was 50% of its life, meaning it was getting close to dead. 3, it hadn't attacked yet, so he still didn't know the true power of this thing. 4, he had no idea if ALICE A.I. had a 'Pissy Boss' mode.

Rota readied his blade straight in front of him, the blade sitting between his two eyes much like the combat stance of Cloud Strife. This creature had not attacked him yet, and if it was getting more confident in this battle, then such action could be coming any time now.

Rota stood poised to strike, when this time the initiative was on the side of the Boar. It charged him, goring him in the right side with its razor sharp tusk. Rota gurgled in pain and surprise as the Boar rammed him into a tree, it was at this moment that he hefted his sword up, and stabbed the blade into the center of its back. It unfortunately didn't seem to do much, but it did get it off of him.

The Player's head was in his hands. If the RNG hated him like that again, Rota was going to die. he looked through his manual for something that could give him an edge, and everything was either inaccessible or far too risky. only one was viable. He began to OOC chat the world, and Rota's Hair and Eye color went light Grey. "HELP, PLEASE!"

As soon as he'd sent off the message, Alyx realized that he was still in combat. He sighed as his shoulders sagged. He didn't even wait for the monster to completely reform before he began to attack it, thrusting his sword powerfully into the cloud of crystal shards that was forming and waiting for the monster to materialize around his blade. With his shield strapped to his arm, he was free to raise his off-hand to massage his eyes softly. He always ran into the boars and bears that stood back up, but he'd had to slaughter dozens of spiders to get the trophy. Ironically, he was wearing nothing but spider equipment. How did that even happen? He guessed his luck was just way better with spiders.

Alyx ripped his sword out of the newly-formed monster, tearing a gash in its shoulder. The game didn't seem to like him exploiting its spawn system, and the boar appeared at full speed, ramming into Alyx' stomach and sending him sliding backward as his toes dug into the earth. The monsters may not be able to damage him, really, but the physics damage seemed that it would always be there. The attack had moved Alyx' health bar by such an infinitesimal amount that he couldn't even see it, but he'd still be sent back almost ten feet. Which made sense; the boar was the size of a bear now, and getting hit by something that size would realistically throw you some distance. As the boar snorted, Alyx bit into the dirt and slashed his sword diagonally across the boar's face as he ran forward.

Alyx cut straight through the boar's face, taking out one of its eyes and bisecting its snout. The boar roared and rubbed its face on the dirt. Alyx grinned and stepped forward as the boar was distracted, raising his sword and charging the glowing white light that would spell doom for this wretched creature. If he'd survived, it would have been left with a pretty intimidating and striking scar. He thought back to other games he'd played, and all of the interesting battlescars he'd seen carried by characters and monsters. This was how they'd happened. Battle. He had a thought that it may not have been quite so one-sided, though.

The boar dashed forward, kicking at Alyx as it felt the sword pierce it just behind the shoulder, tearing a large gash in its side. It fell to the ground as it lost its footing and clambered back to its feet, snorting a steamy breath and scratching at the ground, roaring and charging at Alyx directly. The knight took a breath and raised his sword in both hands, the point facing the earth. The blade began to glow white as he waited for the perfect moment. It was as he was driving his blade down that a notification appeared on his HUD. An OOC announcement filled the woods, and an arrow appeared pointing into the trees. A player needed help.

The boar realized its folly at the last possible second and moved into a defensive position, as if hearing the shout itself. It ultimately ground to a halt, presenting its side to Alyx and taking the sword's tip in its armored shoulder, deflecting most of the damage entirely. Alyx hastily thrust his blade toward the boar's head, aiming at the base of its skull, hoping to sever ts brain stem and move on to the next crisis. He just didn't have time for all this at this point. He'd finally been joined in the game by other players, and he had stuff to do. This fight was over, if he hit his target. He just had a couple seconds before he was free to leave.

The boar was dispatched, finally, and Alyx' blade nicked the back of its head as it collapsed into the dirt, finally giving up the ghost and exploding. Alyx wasted no time, looking into the trees and dashing forward to find the source of the call for help. He found a clearing and saw a man standing against a boar, both wounded. Alyx hefted his shield and charged forward, sliding into position perfectly between the boar and the warrior. He noticed that the man used a Two-Handed Straight Sword. What was it with THSS users and getting into trouble? He wondered idly where Abaddon was before locking onto the boar and preparing for its next attack.

"Don't worry. I'm here to help. My name is Alyxandeyr. I'll take care of defending against it. You just deal enough damage to end this."

The Player smiled as someone came in and stood between the boar and him. he couldn't believe his luck, and it looked like the one who called himself Alyxandeyr was significantly more adept just by looking at his gear. "Thanks. I'll get this done" He turned off his OOC, and Rota's hair reverted to its normal black, and his eyes went back to crimson with scarlet pupils.

Rota returned to consciousness after a while of blacking out. When he came to, there was a guy in front of him coated head to toe in webbing and things that looked like they were ripped off of spiders. He paid him no mind at the moment. All that mattered to him was killing this boar. he removed his hand from the wound, and gripped his sword tight, ready to strike.

Alyx' appearance seemed to have startled the boar, as it appeared to not be intent on attacking any longer. Alyx focused on keeping his shield ready, though, and kept an eye on the boar's movements in case his ally was targeted by a surprise attack. He took the time he had to examine the situation. The other character seemed to only have been hit once, a rather nasty looking gash on his right side. But he was still at roughly fifty percent health, so it wasn't a total loss yet. He was dressed in starter equipment, and armed with a starter THSS. What level was he? He couldn't be too high level, if one hit was enough to bring him down to this state. Alyx focused on keeping him alive for now, and they'd figure everything else out later.

Rota had missed. He had tried to dart around the man, whom he felt that he already knew the name of, and his blood loss started to get the better of him and he had to catch his breath. He glanced at the Boar, and it was clear that the combination of Alyxandeyr's presence and the damage it had incurred from Rota had sparked its desire to flee anew. Rota would not stand for it. He was going to end this. NOW.
