After the long pause Zach finally decided to speak.
"So can you tell me what happened to Emma," she asked. "What happened that made her human?"

"The gender-swapping plague finally hit me and found itself unable to alter my sex. It found another way to change me." Emma said simply. "Whatever this scourge is, it has a sick sense of humor."

"And you said that you had a way to fix things," she asked Hrothbert. "Would it work on everyone else that was affected?"

"Unfortunately, no." he sighed.
"We have a more...personal connection, and the spell to change me back would involve using that connection a great deal. To use that level of magic on anybody else would be...a violation."

He nodded. "Good luck. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a spell to test." The sorcerer bowed, and departed the library.
"And get something to eat! You haven't had anything all day!" Emma called after him, a mix of concern and affection flitting across her features.

"Best of luck," Zach waved and waited for him to leave before turning her eyes to the books waiting for her to read. There were still three she had not gone over yet.

Emma had returned to her own texts, now poring over an aged grimoire, bound in deep-red leather.

"Hey Emma," Zach asked as she lazily turned the page of a book. "If I asked you to kill me, would you?"

"Okay," Zach looked thoughtful for a moment before returning to the books. She found several cases of phoenixes re-growing lost limbs during a rebirth sequence. She had also noticed that these cases were all done scientifically, which meant that the birds in question had not done this of their own accord.
"I wonder if they had a choice," she wondered quietly.

There was the soft sound of a teleportation spell, and the resident sorcerer stepped out of the shadows behind Emma, taking her completely by surprise.
Which was exactly his intention.
The spell wouldn't work if she was expecting it; if he was to convince both body and mind that they were no longer human both had to be confused to begin with.
Emma felt herself being spun around and-
He kissed her.
Magic flowed down into her like a tidal wave.

Zach looked up from the records at the sound of the spell just in time to see Emma being spun around. When she saw the kiss she immediately went back to the pages and waited until the moment passed.

Emma's outline seemed to blur and alter as she felt untold amounts of power working within her.
This was secondary in her mind to the kiss.
Pain flashed through her slender frame, but she paid it no mind.
Her skin began to change its shade and her ears showed signs of elongation.

Zach peered over the top of her book to see if everything was said and done and her eyes widened at the sight. Emma was changing before her eyes back to what she once was. The sight was awesome to say the least.
