How do I get closer to you?
When you keep it all on mute
How will I know the right way to love you? It rang a few more times. Jeez, how long could he wait before it became annoying? And didn't a girl, like, answer her phone every possible second? Oh what. This was Charlie they were talking about. She wasn't a normal girl who was obsessed with her phone.
She was obsessed with football.
A few more rings. A few more seconds...or minutes? Passed by.
Finally, the phone picked up on the other end. There was quick breathing. "Hello?" said that same edgy, sweet feminine voice on the other end.
Jay didn't suppress a grin. His first thought (as always): Charlie could totally be a rockstar. "Hello to you, too," he greeted with his usual friendly warmth and enthusiam. Personally? His day had just brightened with just the sound of her voice. Imagine what her presence would do. "Are we still up for hanging out?"

Why the ******** was she being so stupid?! This was Jay. Jay, ya know, her best friend since forever?
And Uhm. Hello? Landon Lamb, her boyfriend, was just in the other room. Waiting on her at that!
"But I can't hang for long. Landon and I have plans for later." Yeah! Ha!
Why didn't she feel good about rubbing Landon in his face? Ugh.
This girl s**t was too much for her. She didn't particularly enjoy it.
See, a scrapped up knee was easy to fix. A band aid and bam! It was fixed. But a broken heart? Or an emotion on the lose?
Yeah, those weren't so easy to deal with.

When you keep it all on mute
How will I know the right way to love you?There was something nervous about the tone of Charlie's voice. Jay wondered if she was sneaking a call as well. And in the bathroom! Hah, that would be the greatest coincidence ever. There was no time for that now, though. He had to make sure that they were still hanging out together.
"Of course I still want to," Jay nearly laughed. "Why would you think any different? We're...best friends."
Oh man, his voice was getting choked up for a second there. Jay cleared his throat and laughed softly. "I can't hang out for long," she practically rubbed in his face. "Landon and I have plans for later."
Jay bit his lip. He almost kept forgetting that things were different between them. "It's alright," he said, keeping his voice bright and cheery. "Whaddya wanna do?"

Charlie hated Maddison. With like, a deep burning passion.
And that b***h hated her right back. She would do anything to destroy her, of that she was sure.

Wait a second. Madi, she hated Charlie. And the whole rumor...? No. Why would she? Charlie hadn't seen Jay in awhile..
She shook her head at the words best friends,
"Right of course." She sighed softly.
"And uhm. Whatever is fine," Charlie glanced at the door.
Maybe, she should tell Landon she was hanging with Jay..?
No. She wasn't going to bring it up. But she sure as hell wouldn't lie to him,.

"Just meet me at my place in like an hour and a half. Bring a couple of balls or something."

Jay winced, the verbal blow stinging like a slap across his cheek. Why couldn't Charlie just get along with Maddison? Maddie had never done anythign to her. Jay shook his head and sighed away from the receiver. And Maddie hated Charlie right back. The feeling was mutual between the two. "Because I wanted to spend some time with you," he murmured into the phone, loud enough so that she could hear.
Why couldn't that get through to her make up covered head of hers?
He listened to her for the next few minutes. Jay nodded. "Right. I'll be there. I'll bring a softball."
He snickered softly at her pun. Very funny.

Charlie was shocked at his reasoning. She didn't speak for a few moments. But he said that he was gonna bring the ball.
"Mmk," She clicked it off and then tucked the phone in her backpocket and left the bathroom.
After she went into the bedroom again she found Landon still planted on the bed. She sat down on the edge, sighed way too loud and then flopped down on her back.
Aside from the dramatic sigh, she was quiet.

How will I know the right way to love you?Charlie was silent for a few moments on her end. Jay's lips curved into a warm smile. It worked. He wasn't manipulating her. It was the truth. Jay really wanted to see Charlie. After all, who wouldn't want to see their closest friend in the world? She was it. He couldn't imagine playing ball with anyone else by his side. Just her.
"Mmk," she murmured before hanging up.
Jay ended the call on his phone and lowered it from his ear with a soft sigh. He looked at his reflection in the mirror. It stared right back at him. Jay narrowed his eyes. It narrowed its eyes. He made a silly face. It made a silly face. He became serious. The reflection mimicked him perfectly. Finally, Jay turned around and walked out of the bathroom into Maddie's living room.
And she still had her phone glued to her ear. Jay rolled his eyes. Congratulations to the girl getting radiation!

She had plopped down next to him and being who he was, Landon couldn't help but comment.
"You better get that excited when I call you." He had deffinitaly noticed something with all that swooning/one second buisness.
He wasn't accusing her of anything, for all he knew it was some chick on the other line, but it was still funny to see Charlie like that.
There was whining coming from the hall. Landon rolled his eyes.
"Pachino you're allowed to come in!" On cue the dog burst into the room tongue hanging and flopping about.
"Paccchhhiiinnnooooo." It was the kind of name you said as much as you could. It was just that ******** brilliant.
Pachino placed his paws on the bed and lifted him self up.
Typicaly the dog wanted in on the action. He moved over to the end of the bed and sat on both Landon and Charlie's feet.
Though was was expected, Pachino placed his head on Landon's leg.
He was in love and it was sooo ******** obvious.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Her ears perked up as she heard her boyfriend come out and she smiled hanging up her phone not even bothering to say good bye or anything. "So is it a go?" She asked softly closing her phone and slipping her clothes back on. Maddie had heard nothing from where she had been but she was going to make sure to call Ryan later.
"If it is I can take you right now if you want. I need to get some stuff done so I'll drop you off." She explained looking around for her shoes.
Something about the way he looked at her displeased her. Frowning for a split second she thought about what could make him like that.
Unsatisfied sex? Hell no. That was a no no. He probably had some other crap going on.

"What?" Charlie turned on her stomach to look at him. Her head coming about halfway up his thigh, but she was laying next to him.
"Oh, I wasn't really excited.." She shrugged it off.
Then Pachino was bursting into the room and plopping down on the bed by them. His body on their feet, head on his leg.
"Anyway, would you mind giving me a ride home?" She looked him over. "Err, not now but just like, soon?" Her eyes lingered on his before she pulled them away.
She couldn't feel guilty about hanging out with her best friend! Jay was her buddy, they hadn't hung out all summer really, and now they were going to play some catch.
No biggie right? Right.
So why did she feel her stomach tightening? And her heart beating? And why did guilt well up in her stomach when she looked at Landon?!
"And I can still borrow your car right?" Yeah.. hopefully. If not she was screwed.

"I wasn't." Charlie's voice was hard, her face straight. She softened quickly after that though, knowing he was only messing with her.
But she was just antsy now. "Special? No Not really at least.." She bit her bottom lip and then her jaw dropped slightly.

Oooh that made him suspicious. Of what he wasn't sure.
"Come where though? You better not be planning to murder me or something because I'll tell you right now Pachino will burst in and beat you up, right Pachino?"
The dogs ear twitched.
Landon would take that as a yes.
"Okay I'll drive you as soon as I stop being lazy." He didn't seem to be getting up anytime soon.
Charlie crawled up to him and pressed a kiss to his lips.
He hadn't expected it, but he sure as hell didn't mind.
Landon puckered his lips instantly and kissed back, his brown eyes closing immediatly.

Sighing softly she pulled on her cute face and shook her head. Walking over to him she placed a finger to his lips and said, "Nope. I'll give you a ride. Besides I need to talk to Ryan really quick."
