Sju sjuka sjöman sköttes skyndsamt av sjutton sjutna sjuksköterskor. biggrin

It's a tricky sound I've heard. But it's like an English SH pronunced with the tongue in the position of an English K sound, which makes it sound a bit like the CH in the word "loch".

1. Try find the place of your palate where you pronounce your K's. Then make a SH sound and slowly pull your tongue backwards untill you hit the K position. That should be the sound, I think.

2. The other way of achieving the proper pronunciation is to first make the H sound in "human" (not the H sound in "hard") and then pull your tongue backwards the same way.

I dunno which one of these is the easiest to follow, but yeah, it's all I can come up with right now. Perhaps there are other explanations out there on the Internet that are better.

A recordning of the Swedish word "sju" is to be found here.

Varsågod! smile
^^ Tack så mycket! That's sure to help. I can't wait to improve~

Could someone tell me what "ooa hela natten" means? I promised my friend I'd try and find out, but no one seems to have a translation.

Oh, all night! (The whole night)

More like making noices all night you wont find it in a dictionary but that's what it means it's from a song.

It really means "to make happy sounds all night long", like Eoinda said.

One thing that bothers me very very much:

This may sound like a stupid question...the word "och". I always thought that you don't really pronounce the end "ch" part and always learned it that way. I read and hear that in a lot of places but I also see many where they do pronounce the end "ch" and they don't reduce the word to just a sort of "o" sound.

confused

What is the proper way to pronounce this? I don't want to go around sounding like some ignorant person...is there a sort of regional dialect difference here maybe?

---

I also want to make a recording of me pronouncing "sju" so some native Swedish speakers here can verify that I'm pronouncing it correctly; I think I am based on what I've heard and read but I haven't gotten feedback on myself yet. xd

It depends on the dialect I guess or what have you.

Och can be pronounced as 'oh' or 'ohk' but it all depends on the person using it. I think it might be a personal preference. Either you pronounce it as "Ohk" or you pronounce it as "oh."

Now Mivi Navook made a recording a while ago demonstrating "sju"s pronunciation. I think this is also a dialect thing. It's pronounced like "Ch (Like a Scottish "CH" in the word "Loch") + yoo).

if You want to say "och" just try saying "lock" in a heavy british accent(and then take away the "L". but in swedish slang (stockholm slang) we ussually pronounce it as "å" or "oh"

varför gör danskar alltid narr av svenar? jag såg en dansk film som hette "yes det är far" eller något sådant, och i hela filmen snackade dom om svenar.
