Space Marines are just the noob vacuum, everyone usually starts as them due to the free pieces in the starter set plus they are simple and they are best all around fighters.
I wont say were to start, but Ill say were to stay clear of for your first army:
Chaos
Eldar
Witch hunters
Daemon Hunters
Dark Eldar

Id have to argue the Eldar being on that list. They were my first army, and the first army of the guy who got me into it, and the first army of a guy i got into it. 2 out of 3 of us never had any problems. And the one who did, the guy i got in, only had problems because he was choosing nothing but heavy units and played Iyanden, he was always outnumbered, and for all his firepower, it was only really good against tanks.

I reckon Chaos don't need to be there either. They're the most versatile army out there.

But they are still complicated with such a variety of choices as to overwhelm beginners...

Yea. Chaos is not a good army for true begginners.

I've told the people at the local Rogue Trader I've recently found that I'm starting up a Death Korps of Krieg regiment for my first army, and they say I'm crazy. Then they say that I should fund their armies too. I retort that I'm too poor for my army, much less theirs.

Lesson of the day: Start with a non-expensive army if you want to start playing soon.

i started with chaos i originally wanted to buy space wolves cause i had read some of there fluff on line but when i got to the GW store and got a look at the art(I am an art major so things like art work usually decide for me) in there codex i was disappointed then i looked to my immediate left and saw the chaos codex and they looked all cool with there grisly trophies and that dead imperial guard guy and the bolter all firing and i knew they were the army for me so i bought the box that had 3 bikes one rhino 12 berserker and 12 regular marines and the codex and they have yet to fail me in battle i even won my first game with them against necrons

People can start with just about any army. I started on Orks. My friend started on Dark Eldar. A third started with Necrons.

Its not about picking the army that is the best, its about using the army you like best. I'm sure I would be great with Tau, but I would never ever want to play them. I think,(No offense to the Tau lovers out there) that the modles are fairly ugly. Sure, great shooting, but unfun to build and paint. But Orks, (Again, in my opinion) are the funnest army to build, paint and play with. There are so many things I can do with my Orks. I'd never trade them in.

I think, and this is odd coming from a guy who is doing it, IG is a poor army to start with. If you go for the foot sloggers, you're spending an obscene amount of cash for your first five hundred points in comparison to other armies. If you go with Mechanized troops, you're very likely to end up like half the other IG lists I've seen that just focuses so heavily on their three Heavy choices.

Eh.

On a side note, I'd love to play Dark Eldar. Not so much for the fluff, but their style seems so wonderful. I've seen the Codex - such speed, such firepower! Fragile, yes, but I just love how they can zoom and unload hurricanes of ammo. It's just that... well... the models are amongst the most idiotic things I've ever seen.

"You've got BDSM in my 80s metal! Your got 80s metal in my BDSM!"

The vechiles are alright, but the infantry looks so silly. I couldn't even bring myself to paint them bright pink and go with a Hello Kitty theme because I know they'd still be the same silly model underneath.

back when i started 40k 11 years ago i started with plain old mairnes, mainly becasue of theree money cost vs pts cost, and there the second easiest models to paint(necrons are first easiest but were all metal back then). honestly tho i would stay away form space marines, chaos or imperail variety, i have played the spectrum over the years and the most fun to play army was eldar, there super fast can be infantry heavy (infantry = win) and now they get harlequins as a squad in the latest codex. orks are fun too just for the pure randomness of and crazyness of it all.

i supose tho it all boils down to what you like to look at them most, atleast for me, ive palyed thema ll and ended up going bakc to marines, something about the powerarmor just keeps me coming back ive been in love with it ever since i saw a painted blood angel marine on an oooold gw leaflet after i mailed them a letter asking questions aobut warhammer fantasy back in '95.

play what you like, there is no best army, only the army you like best. all the codexes have lots of confusing rules to noobs, all it takes is reading the books a few times and getting out there and playign a few games, take what you get and learn to paly it correctly and youl find yourself winning more and more( perfect example is a guy at the local shop started with dark eldar lost his first 20 games or so then realised he wasnt using DE to there strengths, speed and firepower, started mounting squads in raiders and now is one of the top players at our shop)

I have to reccomend my army, Necrons.
-It's possible to be pretty lazy painting them and they still look okay, even if the modelling takes a bit.
-They're just as tough as any space marine.
-They've got MASSIVE firepower, they're standard infantry gun can harm vehicles, and can double shoot within 12" if you don't move.
-They've got 3 units that can move like jetbikes. (Destroyers, Heavy Destroyers, Wraiths.)
-One unit (Flayed ones) can deep strike, even if the game conditions don't allow it. (I'm not sure what things from other armies can do this, if any, but it sounds pretty cool from where I stand)
-They're one vehicle, the monolith, can fire D6 shots at multiple targets, with an ordinance blast, is super-tough, and can teleport a nearby necron unit to it.
-Possibly the most appealing thing about necrons for beginners is that they can get back up after being killed, making necrons very forgiving to new players who are prone to mistakes. My first fight ever with my army, I almost completely destroyed the enemy, I lost three troops.

Not true beginners, but when you're off the "few games" stage and want to expand, Chaos can be there as well.

And when you're a wisened sage, your Chaos army shall still be malleable. smile

I'll have to disagree with the statements of "Choas is a bad starter army." I've recently started playing 40K, and decided to get a Chaos army after I got my Macragge set. Why? Because Chaos Just seems so... Damn fascinating. There's just something cool about being the bad guys.

Back on topic, there really isnt any downside to Chaos. They're just as versatile as normal SM, but have some extra benefits (As well as lose some).
Other than a few questions I've had on what sort of expansions I should get on my army, I'm happy with them.
