Josh put a hand on the shoulders of Fyrin and Gennady. "I'm sure our three demon friends are aware... if word of this base's location ever gets out, Angelic Vengeance will fall upon you all."
"There are plenty of temporary residences you can rent out. We can open up an account for you guys so you can begin making purchases; your previous work will give you a decent level of starting credit," Alan informed them.

"Are you kidding?" Fyrin scoffed. "Let Ma'Krogeyna get his hands on this? Not a chance... not a single chance..." he murmured, staring back out into the dome, trying to identify things. What might that be? Public services, perhaps? An apartment? It was beautiful...
Paul nodded in approval. "Credit, though? Not... you know, real money? Like, we'll probably end up paying all of this back?" He was hesitating. Making ends meet was hard enough without splurging on a room in an amazing... underground... city... Maybe they could stop renting the other place. Maybe this would be a nice place to live, other than the magical anomalies.

"Our economy works kind of like this...." Josh began. "Our basic unit of currency is one hour of your work, in the field or in production or information gathering. Anything, really. To build up the value of your time-credits, you do stuff successfully; a good has the value of however much time it took to make it, plus however long it took to deal with the costs of world-currencies, materials, and magic. Your time-credits will have unusually high starting values because of this missions you've run with us already.
"To obtain a good, you essentially are putting your time-credits out into the system; you stay a night in a rental place, they'll want some arbitrary number of time credits; they can then use your time credits to sell to others for other goods.
"Essentially, a time-credit is like money with all the value you are capable of giving it."

Paul nodded. "Right," he murmured. "So... I'm probably kinda wealthy. Given all the crap we've pulled," he added. Dang. Siber would be worth trillions, Joe perhaps as much. Paul probably only accounted enough to make up for the ammunition he'd wasted.
"Is there... some way to get around faster than just walking?" Paul inquired hopefully. He stared down at Joe's jacket, unzipped it slightly to look at his trashed shirt, and shuddered. No more walking; it was soaked in sweat already from Fyrin's little escapade.

"With Shadow magic disabled? I should hope so," Alan replied. "Look carefully." His finger pointed at a valley through the buildings. "That's the train line. There's one at each stop every five minutes or so."

Joe listened to the information on money with interest. "Are you serious? Then we're worth..." His fingers flicked in and out rapidly as he calculated in his head. "Well, at the very least, about three month's worth. That's...2160 hours. At least." He looked around. "That a lot, right?" He turned back to Linda. "And hey, if Arturo needs suplies and stuff, I'd be glad to pay for it. Not like I'm gonna get much more than clothes and maybe a haircut."

"It doesn't quite work like that," Josh replied with a laugh. "Independent action doesn't get money, only contracts. So, if I take on all your contracts, you have now... around 10 each of my time-credits. But, you also can sell your time-creds in small numbers because yours have high value. So what might cost an initiate ten or so credits, like a night in a hotel, would take more like two or three, maybe even one, for you."

One of Joe's eyebrows drooped and the other raised skeptically. "Riiiiiight. OK. I'll take your word for it. Maybe when we go out, you can come with us."

"We'll just head to a banking/contract terminal," Josh replied. "I'll register you, Alan and I will put in our recommendations and explanations of your tasks, the computer will process it, and you'll be set. Come on, the lift to the ground level is this way." He walked towards a glass elevator.

Nyeaaah.))
"Hey, new girl," one of the vampires grunted. "What magic do you have?" Vampire soldiers were running through the plane, arming themselves and preparing for what seemed to be something very big.
