Something nudged him. Axel cracked his eyes open blearily. It was the mare. He shut his eyes tightly. Maybe if he pretended to be dead, he would be dragged off to the nurse and this horrible day would at last be over.

The horse's snuffling nose moved closer to his face and Axel jumped to his feet with surprising speed. He didn't want to get bitten in the face by the damn horse.

The mare didn't protest as he climbed up into the saddle, and set off at an easy pace around the walking course. To Axel's utter astonishment, they reached the end without any bites, falls, or other disasters. The mare must feel guilty about trying to kill him. He sat perfectly still in the saddle and felt his head, wondering if he had cracked his skull on that last fall and was imagining this now.

In utterly shocked surprise, Preacher didn't even notice when galvani refused to jump the hurdle and instead swerved around it.

It was kind of lame that everyone else was trotting around like a grand equestrian jumping hurdles and so forth, and his greatest achievement yet was managing to stay aboard a horse for five minutes without falling off. Also he didn't like Preacher laughing at him and kind of didn't want her to remember him as being by far the most pathetic trainee of the day.

His confidence bolstered by that single successful ride, Axel set the mare off around the walking course again and booted her, hoping that maybe she would at least gallop impressively. Instead, she tried to buck him off. Axel managed to hang on, but only just.

This was a task Mykanos felt comfortable with, as well. Growing up in the mountains as he did, he was quite accustomed to both wild life, and the partnership with horses. He approached the horse that was designated to him. Comet. Interesting name for a horse... The energy the temporary stallion possessed was quite palpable, and robust, in clear opposition to Mykanos' own stoic demeanor. But that didn't keep the tall man from offering some affection towards his steed, rubbing along the long bridge of his nose.

edit: { reread instructions. mykanos is an experienced rider. so no modifier. }

With a bit of gentle, and calm coaxing, Mykanos was able to successfully bring Comet out to the field with the other trainees and horses. It was a little bitter sweet being around them, having had to sell his own to a neighboring family before leaving for the military. But he knew they'd take care of his old dear friend. Giving a pat along the stallions neck, the hunter walked along the large beasts side, and hoisted himself up onto its back with ease. There was some initial reaction from Comet, adjusting to his new rider, and the two of them getting comfortable with one another, but the ungulate seemed accepting of their pairing. An encouraging nudge against the back of the ribs was given in order to get the two of them going into a light trot. Since he had ridden plenty of times back home, Mykanos thought it may be crucial to try testing himself with something he'd never really had the chance with; the hurdles. While there were overturned trees that had to be cleared from time to time back home, it wasn't often that leaping was involved during his rides. Come to think of it... would it really come up when they were out there doing their duties? what did he know.

Leading Comet to the hurdles, he waited his turn, before giving a confident command to set his steed forward. After watching others go before him, Mykanos tried to imitate their movements, and how they'd handled the jumps. It required some getting used to. The first hurdle was the most foreign, of course, but as they went on, Mykanos was able to keep up with the spirited beasts gung-ho nature. From time to time Comet would stop to shake his head roughly, or nod it abruptly. But they got through the course in one piece!

+1 modifier || 1 lap completed ; 9 hurdles cleared

"It's the final stretch!" Hwan was not going to mess this up again. He'd re-positioned the last hurdle back in place after having knocked it down with his last attempt and knew this was his shining moment of glory. He'd have to do it right this time or Ervette would never think of him as a man, only an idiot. Plus, he didn't want to end up looking like Alec rolling around on the ground. Seriously, what the heck had happened there?!

His pulse quickened and he stroked Vivi's mane to calm himself down more than for her benefit. Taking in a deep breath, he guided her forward and the two soared over the hurdle almost as if in slow motion. It was the most amazing day of his life as a cool breeze washed over them and the sun shone brighter than anything.

Or well, that how it'd gone down in his mind. In reality, they simply leaped over it and landed before Vivi trotted back around to where Larisa, Jeong and Alec stood.

"So, ah, that's done. Anyone up for apple crisps?" One round of hurdles was enough for him and he was keen to get out of here and find something to snack on. Walls, was he ever not hungry?

Alec stood himself up, brushing off and even from his position on the ground he easily lifted himself back up onto the saddle as he planted his weight in the stirrups and swung his leg over the horse. Settling he sat up and gave a little click as he trotted over to join the small group.

"I dunno, I let go since I was laughing. I should know better I've ridden enough times." His cheeks were flushed, coughing to clear his thought."Ohh! Apple Crisp sounds good. I'm game." he agreed nodding his head. "I'll go stable up this mare, and we'll go look into that sure thing." Maybe they'd have to step off base if the kitchen was too busy, but they were free for the day now that training course was over...so what could it hurt to make new friends? He looked sheepish given he'd laughed his head off like a crazy person, but really the three trainees didn't make him feel bad or anything about it. So by his books, Alec was content to joke along and have fun.

Ervette took the horse once the red head hopped down, she was satisfied what the misstep was recovered from and offered a sly wink of acknowledgement to the lot for having finished. All in all she was immensely pleased. "You guys got a good hand on this, I'm proud. keep it up." She bolstered grinning at the little group before excusing herself needing to keep an eye on the other trainees for the now.

Ervette stood before the trainees. Behind her was a large barrel of water and a big chest of supplies. A few smaller buckets were stacked next to the barrel.

This was going to be some very serious business.

"Week three. Shelter and first aid. This is very important stuff here. There are times where we spend weeks out there, and we don't have the best supplies with us. This can mean that many times, we'll be responsible for our own shelter, and our own first aid. We've got to be inventive more often than not, and we've got to work together to keep ourselves - and each other - alive."

Ervette paused and began to pair off the trainees into teams of two.

"Now. First we need shelter. You will work together with your teammate to build a shelter that can sustain heavy rainfall. And by heavy rainfall, I mean we'll be dumping a bucket of water on your shelter to see if it's worked. If it has, congratulations. If it hasn't... well, learn from your mistakes and the mistakes of those around you."

The woman gestured towards the chest of supplies.

"Once you are finished with your respective shelters, each one of you will suffer from a different injury that could happen out on the field. Sprained ankles and wrists. Cuts. Gashes and scrapes. Bruises. There will be blood out there, trainees, and sometimes it won't be pretty. You'll have to think fast and move faster, and you will have to rely on one another to make sure that you don't die out there."

Ervette spent a moment designating injuries to the various trainees, and then clapped her hands together.

"Lets go."

Quote:
Welcome to Survival, Week Three: Shelter and First Aid.

This week is broken into two mini-events! First, you will be paired off. You and your partner will be responsible for building a shelter using things they find and scavenge.

Each pair is issued the following:
• One tarp
• One bedroll
• Rope

If both parties agree (and this is completely optional) roll 2d6 with your final post and quote me. The first number of your dice is how waterproof your shelter is (1 is awful, 6 is amazing), and the second number of your dice is how stable your shelter is (1 is awful, 6 is amazing). This is completely optional, and should only be used if you want to add a little RP flavor!

Second, you and your partner will need to practice the basics of first aid! You have each been assigned some sort of wound, and you have each been given a small crate of supplies. Each crate also comes with a very bare-bones edition of first aid basics! One partner must practice first aid basics on the other, and then they must switch. Please feel free to make up whatever is in your crate; this is only a loose guideline!!

To complete this course, you must post a minimum of 800 words worth of interaction with your designated partner as your characters complete the tasks they've been given! This is 800 words cumulative, spread out between the two tasks for this week's training.

If your partner disappears (i.e. does not post for a long period of time without notifying you), and you are afraid you will not reach the minimum word count for this week: please quote me and you will be given further information!!

You have until August 21th 11:59PM PST to respond to this prompt.

Ervette had lead the class away from the military compound, heading off grounds into a wooded areas. Behind those gathered was an open field, while in front are large trees that seem to go on forever. It is mid day, part of the day had been spent trekking to the off site location. All the needed supplies and gear for this week's lesson were readily on hand, including food and water. Trainees have been handed their supplies and groups assigned. Ervette sits crouched down by a makeshift gathering for a fire. It doesn't take her long, she explains the importance of how to create, and properly maintain a fire for those interested. She expects everyone to begin their lesson while she sets up their base camp in the mean time.

Busy at work, if called for she would attend to those looking for her. With groups assigned she went about her own business in the mean time.

Having lived most of his life in a cottage and then moving to the city, Hwan had no idea how set up a shelter. He could work out some logistics in theory but the boy had never been faced by a challenge like this before and eyed the tarp and rope with curiosity. Somehow these two things needed to combine to create something hardy enough to withstand a bucket...

"Shakuntala, was it? I'm Hwan." He talked breezily, trying to play it casually as he stepped closer to the girl. Of course he remembered who she was, the dark skinned girl was the shy and soft-spoken wallflower at the Truth or Dare game but he didn't want to embarrass her by reminding her of it. She'd timidly sat off to the side until dragged into the spotlight and his eyes lingered on her lips in memory of her confession. It had been crazy, were people really that unlucky in the world? Ervette lectured on about the properties of different fires but he couldn't help but spend his time wondering if Tala had ever kissed anyone else, human anyways. He had no way of knowing just how uninterested she was in boys or romance at all. Eventually the instructor's remarks came to a close and it was time to begin!

"So! I've never done this before in my life," Loud sheepish laughter, "But you look smart so I'm sure we can figure this out." Picking up their share of materials from a pile, he started towards the forest to find a place to begin. In actuality, it would be best to get deep in the cover of the trees to hide from anything but he kind of wanted to stay close to base camp for the exercise in case they had to beg Ervette (or his brother) for help.

"What do you think of this spot? Looks nice. Sorta." He patted a low branch from a nearby pine tree. "The lower branches look dried out and dead. We could take the needles off for insulation and use the branches to set up a fire." Coming from a humble almost-poor home, Hwan knew a few cheap tricks to help warm things up. However, he still had no idea how to make the actual shelter that they were being tested on but... hey, maybe they could get bonus points for extra things like bedding and fires!

"I don't know how big of a 'cot' we could make quickly but I don't mind sharing the bedroll." They were going to have to anyways since they'd only been given one but he felt like making the sad reality a little more fun by flirting. Glancing at her over his shoulder while he yanked branches off the tree, Hwan sent a subtle wink her way.

Shakuntala was quite reluctant to leave her horse friends and carry on with the next task of the week. She cast maroon eyes to the mare she had come to know so well over the course of two riding sessions and the others she would never come to know at all. Even as Ervette spoke and informed her and her other fellow trainees of their new duties to come, she kept her eyes pinned to the arena and the horses being led back to the stalls as she followed the group until they disappeared out of sight altogether behind the thickets surrounding the compound. Now that her mind was torn from its distraction, she shifted her attention fully on the green-haired instructor, but not without giving a passing thought to how wonderful of a horse Scout was.

She listened intently to the instructions required of shelter and first aid. Unfortunately, her knowledge when it came to camping was on par with Hwan's. Having lived under a roof that she dared not step much out of during her youth, she didn't know where construction began and ended for a temporary shelter. The materials provided did not raise her spirits either; they seemed flimsy and incapable of withstanding the artificial downpour that was to come. Shakuntala glanced to the face that spoke her name and chagrined slightly at the fact she was always seeing double when it came to the twins. This was reflected in the slight thinning of her lips -- which she forced into a welcoming smile upon his introduction.

"Y-yes, I'm Shakuntala... Nice to, um, n-nice to meet you, Hwan..."

Having learned that Hwan too was unfamiliar with outdoor survival upped her uncertainty tenfold. She took his compliment in stride as she followed after him; the silence on her lips a product of her hesitancy when it came to the task. She immediately thought of going to Ervette for pointers and even kept her eyes pinned on the woman as they descended into the forest to find a spot. Glancing about at the area Hwan brought her to, she gave him a slight shrug of her shoulders.

"Sure, i-it works," Shakuntala replied with a nod, before giving a clueless blink to the wink he directed to her. Was that a signal for something? Did he want something? Did he tell a joke? Was she supposed to laugh? Was she not supposed to laugh? What did that mean? It took a good, lengthy while for the meaning of Hwan's implication to register in her mind as, and she had bent at the waist to pick up the tarp and unfold it, it dropped limply from her gloved hand when she stiffened from a flush.

"I... Uh... Um..." Shakuntala choked nervously at him, eventually forcing out. "Let's... L-let's just make the shelter, o-okay?"

Yamashii

Build a shelter. Sounded easy enough, but to Hazel it did not feel like it would be an easy task. She desperately wished that first aid was first, at least with that she knew what she was supposed to do. Her teal eyes looked at the crate in front of her, it contained a tarp, a coiled up rope, and one bed roll, were Rose and she supposed to share? Hazel scanned the group of people, who was Rose? Her eyes skipped over a boy with pink and green hair and then returned, was he Rose? He was about a foot shorter than she was, his eyes fascinated her, one was blue and the other one was green.

“Hi, I’m Hazel, are you Rose?” The young woman looked at the crate on the ground where she had left it, the other groups were breaking up and discussing how they would build their shelter and keep it from getting destroyed when the bucket test came. Hazel turned back to the young boy, “I don’t know what I am doing, I haven’t needed to build a shelter before.” She was thinking it would be best to utilize the trees in some fashion, but she was not sure if that was considered cheating or inventive. There was so much about the military that made her branch out from what she would usually do. Before she never would have done hand to hand combat, would have never ridden a horse, or would have never needed to have the skills to build a shelter in hostile territory. During the past couple of weeks she has gained in strength and added some muscle mass. She was not sure if she still weighed 105 pounds, she doubted that she did, now that she had three meals a day. And bread. So much bread. That is one positive about joining, although it was not her favorite, it was still delicious carb filled bread.

“So… how should we do this?” Hazel Snow fervently wished that her partner new something about survival and how to build a secure structure out of the tarp and rope. If he did not, then she would silently observe those around her and see how they set up their contraption and if it could with stand a bucket being poured upon it. What would happen if they failed? It was not a thought she wished to dwell upon, so she pushed it from her mind and concentrated on the task at hand.

Zinnia was feeling very enthusiastic about the newest stage of their survival training classes. Hand-to-hand combat had been fun but painful. Horse riding had just been painful (so to speak). But this-- this would be like camping, right? She'd never gone camping before, but she loved nature so it would definitely be fun.

Leaving the compound with the rest of her class had been exciting. The trees behind the compound were huge and seemed to go on forever. She hoped that they would be able to spot some wild animals in the field or forest; she didn't see many other than birds, horses, and insects back at the compound.

She listened with interest to Ervette's instructions on how to build a shelter and fire, as well as the basics of first-aid. Her heart leaped when she heard her name paired with Lenore's; this couldn't have gone better! This would definitely be the best class; if she was working with her friend, it was sure to be a lot of fun. She immediately turned her head, trying to make eye contact with the younger trainee, but she held herself, quivering with eagerness, at attention until Ervette had finished calling names and turned them loose.

"Lenore!" Zin said, skipping to her side immediately. She continued, speaking at a mile a minute, "Hi! How are you? Have you liked the classes so far? This is going to be so much fun; I've never built a shelter before! But how hard can it be? I sure hope that we do a good job and don't get soaked; that would suck. I wonder if a bucket of water is a good representative of rain. Sure, sometimes it rains pretty hard, but... Oh! Let's grab our supplies! And we have to find a spot, quick, before everyone takes all the good places." She rubbed her hands together, her eyes darting around as she tried to decide what to do first.

The horse riding was something Rennati had enjoyed thoroughly. She could definitely see herself taking up riding. At least it was an easier way to get around and she didn't have to worry about herself tripping over anything! That was a definite plus. It was probably the reason she enjoyed it so much, even though she knew she got lucky with the horse she was handed. Some of those horses didn't seem very nice!

But now it was time to move on to shelter building and first aid. Ren smiled to herself with the first aid part, if being a klutz had taught her anything it had been first aid. The building a shelter part got her a little worried though. Sure she had gone out with her dad a few times to collect some wood, or even on the few times her brother went out but they never let her try to build it. It'd just take longer having the klutz try and do stuff. She had learned to just stay out of the way when she was growing up. That being said, though, Rennati had seen shelters made a few times and she wondered if she would be able to replicate it.

Once they had made it to a wooded area, Ervette started showing them how to build a fire. That was definitely something she would need to learn. Actually, there were a LOT of things she needed to learn, but she would have the time to learn them. Grabbing one of each of the supplies they were supposed to get, Rennati stood away from the group a little bit. She had been paired with someone named Hilda Rose? "Hilda? Hilda Rose?" She called out and approached someone at random who little did she know was actually her partner. "Hey do you know who Hilda Rose is?"

Axel listened to Ervette's instructions closely, his spirits lifting with every word. This. This. He could do this. He would be on solid ground, not handling any blades or finicky gear, and no horses would be involved whatsoever. For the first time in quite a while, Axel felt bright and happy and supremely confident that he could complete the assigned tasks without making a total a** of himself in front of his classmates.

Then partners were assigned.

Axel's bright mood dimmed significantly. It wasn't exactly that he dreaded working with Preacher. It was more that he dreaded humiliating himself in front of Preacher. Her laughing at him over his spectacular failure with the horse was bad enough. If he kept screwing up her opinion of him would sink even lower, and Axel was pretty sure Preacher's opinion of him was already at rock bottom.

He had to try to think positive. Preacher had confided in him recently. They'd had a Touching Moment, even if she had laughed at him while riding horses. And if her opinion of him was already as low as it could possibly go, there was nowhere to go but up!

Hooray?

That positive thought in mind, Axel picked up the tarp, bedroll and rope, and carted them over to meet Preacher. "Hello, Preacher!" He gave her a sunny smile. Positive! Think positive! He wasn't going to screw up this time, and Preacher was going to be impressed by his ... his adequateness. Or something.

Axel had never been camping in his life and hadn't a clue what to do. Preacher would know, of course, because Preacher was a very clever girl who had all kinds of tricks up her sleeve. He could at least do the bedroll. Axel knelt, spread the bedroll out on the ground between them and looked at her expectantly, awaiting further instruction.
