"I will not harm you. But, I want to sit faraway," Toki called to Gouki. He climbed up the tree and returned to his position of comfort, among the tree canopy. He watched them all silently for a moment, then asked, "Cat child, who is your mother?"

Gouki would assure Mara as the question was posed.
"We...we don't have mother's Gouki said defiantly. We have been doing just fine the two of us and now we are a family of three." Gouki said defiantly. He wouldn't mind finding more about her mother but he found Mara in a fire and no one about. Who knows what happened to her mother and Gouki didn't want her to worry about it if he could avoid it.

Mara snuggled against him. "I am glad you are back brother. Are you alright?" she asked him looking into his eyes. "Tell me the truth now, I can tell when you are lying." She said seriously.
Mara looked in the direction of the unfamiliar man. "Who is he?" she asked, and she asked Toki, "Why do you ask about my mother?" She hugged Gouki tighter. "Gouki sis my brother, I never had a mother." she told him. "I have only even been with Gouki."

Gouki smiled and kissed Mara's cheek.
"Yeah I'm alright sis. So long as we are together I believe nothing can truly go wrong." Gouki said happily. "As for the man over there I surprised him earlier when I caught him watching our camp."

“I’m going to rest a little more. Wake me when you are done talking.” Sakura would lay down the moment she said this. Her body still demanded a little sleep as she closed her eyes. She had to gain a little control of the darkness in her body and through sleep she could do this.

"Men cannot give birth to children," Toki stated, slightly confused. He shifted a little, the branches creaking softly. His tongue flicked quickly through the air, but his blank facial expression remained. "It seems you... hate me?" He asked the question uneasily, unsure of the right words. "Or do I make you nervous?"

"Nervous." Mara said truthfully, "I don't know what to say to you. Your words. They are interesting. Why did you ask about my mother?" Mara asked curious about Toki. "You can't just ask and leave. Please tell me more."

Toki made a motion to his head, "A woman with ears like yours. I don't see people like that often, so I thought..." He trailed off, leaning back against the tree trunk and closing his eyes. He napped quietly, the rays of the sun keeping him warm.

Suddenly Gouki had a deep feeling of horror in his gut. What if this woman was Mara's real mother. Up to this point Gouki had always thought the mother abandoned her or was killed by those angry villagers. What if her mother was still alive? What if the Mara was only left behind because the mother was not in town and the townsfolk wanted to send her a message. Why was Mara left behind?
Gouki hugged his adopted sister not sure to be happy or sad at the moment.
"Say Mara. Do you want to see if he can show us to this woman with ears like yours?" Gouki asked as he hugged her.

Mara cocked her head to the side. She reached her arms around Gouki. "Um, sure Gouki, if you would like." she said smiling. "It would be nice to meet another person with ears like mine." She giggled happily.

Sakura continued to sleep. Her body seemed to be unable to awaken as she began sputtering water from her lips. The darkness had begun to attack her from the inside this time. Her powers had begun going out of control in her sleep and she didn’t know it and she couldn’t tell anyone as she seemed to begin convulsing and fighting for a single breath of air.

Gouki's sharp ears picked up sputtering and he looked down to the sleeping Sakura. to his horror he found her trying to gasp for air. He dropped and pushed Sakura over so the water could escape her more easily. Gouki pushed on Sakura to try to force the water out of her but he did not know what was causing the water to suddenly build in her.

Sakura was able to draw in a breath, but no sooner did she do this that she was attacked internally by the darkness again till finally it ended. The attack by the darkness subsided. She’d start breathing with Gouki pushing out all of the water from her body. The darkness hadn’t won and taken her life in her sleep. She actually survived it as it seemed to have taken on a new shape in how it attacked her.

Gouki did not want to leave Mara hanging but he had to see how Sakura was doing his face got real close to hers as he checked her neck for a pulse and he checked her breathing.
"Are you okay Sakura?" Gouki asked concerned.

“I’m fine now…the darkness attacked me…” Sakura’s eyes would open as she tried not to cough on Gouki. She knew she had just a little water in her lungs still from the attack. She could feel it trying to shape and change her body. Her body was changing and into something that could end only in death without her headdress. “I fear I have little time before the attacks get much worse. I need my headdress and soon…”
