Awen lowered her arms instantly hearing the panic in the unchanged woman's voice. This was not going to be pretty. She stepped up into the beach bar and gave Nita a small smile. "New islander then...?"

Turning her attention to Maryke she have a half hearted sigh. "My name's Awen." She said softly. "And try to stay calm, no one's going to hurt you here. We don't mean to scare you at all...."

She gestured to a stool. "You.. may want to sit down."

She looked from one to the other and then blanched, her stomach twisted in knots as her heart tried very hard to burst out of her chest it seemed like. All at once she remembered Sabin's little spiel and instantly wondered if these people were inflicted with that 'Dingo Fever' or whatever he had called it. Could a disease make you look like....that?? She didn't know and she sure as hell didn't want to find out. But, she had recieved a vacination, had been given a shot just a few hours ago! So....she was okay... right?

Bracing herself, Maryke slowly sat down on an empty barstool, in between where Nita was sitting and Awen was standing. "I'm not scared," she said turning towards the blue girl and attempting to look confident, easily making it look so. "I just want to know what the hells going on..."

Nita nodded back at Awen. "I have a feeling we're the first she's met," she said under her breath to the blue-haired girl. She was relieved to know that Awen was going about this in a straight-forward manner.

"Basically... we're being turned into animals. I know it sounds impossible, but as you've already noticed..." Nita gestured to her tail, hanging down off the stool behind her. "Red panda." She idly traced designs in the water rings on the surface of the bar.

"A doctor Moreau runs this island. He has tricked or taken people from all over the world and brought them here to the island for his experiments." Awen continues were Nita left off. "There studying some sort of gene therapy, to my understanding. They are researching the effects and properties of their serums. People have been taken here for a number of reasons, I for example had hydrophobia, so they wanted to see what transforming me into a manta ray would do. Other people have some diseases or conditions or defects that they are trying to erradicate from our systems." She was piecing together all that she learned from her time on the island as well as everything Sabin had mentioned.

If someone didn't know better it would sound like Awen had the entire inside scoop like a lab tech. She was very glad Fee wasn't here at the moment to hear all of this.

"We're tricked and brought here and we can never again leave. I'm sorry, really sorry you had to hear it like this. But... the sooner you know the truth, the sooner you can get over it. Lying for the doctors and beating around the bush never helped before..."

She listened intently, though her head was lowered slightly and her hazel eyes were staring at the same spot on the bar listlessly. Too many things were running through her head right then and there. Shock for one, fear for another, but when all was said and down the presiding emotion was of course anger. She had been on the run from the ******** FBI for god's sake. If they couldn't take her, then who the hell could? She thought no one would ever be able to hold down the swanky madame. She was the one who called all the shots! She was the one who was at the top! And she was the one who did all the tricking! But, now.....

"That son of a b***h!" She suddenly yelled jumping up from where she was sitting, after what seemed like an eternity of silence since Awen had spoken. "I'm going to kill that ******** doctor...he....he lied to me. ME!"

She was pissed, beyond pissed. Speaking not to the them, but to herself and by default they could listen in. She was at a loss, completely and utterly. Maryke could only think of only one thing to do, so reaching into the backpocket of her low rising jeans she fished out her cell phone.

"I'm calling my lawer!" she announced, before attempting to punch in some numbers. Her face went utterly livid when she realized, however, that the phone did not work.

Nita sat quietly through Awen's explanation, occasionally nodding to emphasize a fact she already knew. "I was supposed to be studying abroad," Nita added. "And while I suppose this is technically 'abroad,' it wasn't precisely what I'd been expecting."

It didn't occur to Nita to wonder why Awen had such an eloquent explanation, rather, she was mostly just relieved to have someone else doing the talking. She almost smiled at Maryke's reaction, watching curiously to see what would happen with the phone. She had figured that cell phones didn't work on the island-- surely others had brought them along-- and clearly she was correct in her assumption. "I don't think your lawyer can help you now," Nita said softly, shaking her head.

This was bad. Very bad. She had run away from one problem and straight into another. Maryke stared down at the phone, squeezing it so hard that her knuckles were begining to turn white. Anger had taken hold of her and the sad fact of the matter was, that there wasn't anything she could do about this. Out there, in the real world, she would have had Sabin and this Moreau person taken care of. There wasn't nothing she couldn't do with a little cash flow or a cleavage shot.

But here, out 'in the wild' Rules were different. Fine. Maryke would just have to learn how the game was played and then rest assured she'd claw her way to the top. She was bright a woman, and knew what wonders manipulation could hold. Granted the whole turning into an animal stitch would put a damper on things, but right now revenge was the only thing that concerned her. She would get it, she just needed to figure out how.

That was the harder part, the part that took some thinking. And with everything that had just happened, what she had just learned, was doing nothing but throw her mind around like a rag doll. She sighed and leaned over the bar, head in hands, and upper body completely lain over it. Had she been bent over just another inch her crack would be showing, not that she'd care in a situation such as this.

"What am I going to do...." she murmured quietly, squeezing her eyes shut.

Nita watched the new woman fold herself over the counter as Awen indicated she needed to go. Shaking her head softly, Nita was inexplicably sorry for Maryke, obnoxious behavior aside. Learning the true nature of the island was difficult for anyone.

Moving hesitantly, Nita placed a furred hand on Maryke's shoulder. "You'll survive," she said softly. "It's what we all do."

Maryke stayed there for what seemed like an eternity over that counter, eyes shut and body twitching when Nita laid a hand on her. Not because of Nita iof herself, but because Maryke was on edge. She could deal with this, she was dealing. Retribution aside Maryke wasn't a stranger to playing a Roman in Rome therefore in this situation she could act how the 'natives' did. She could adjust until she found some way off this godforsaken island. She was going to ask more questions, demand answers, but she had a feeling they had all been asked and answered before. Surely, she wasn't the only one driven enough to get the hell out of here.

But, that would be for later. She could inwardly plan all that. Quick as a whip the madam was back in her element. If she was going to get off this hell hole she'd at least need to learn more about this place and the people in it. She slowly slid her body back up and to her full height, looking over to Nita as she did. Underneath the wardrobe and the fur, she could almost see the human left in her. Well that was....promising. If not a little creepy.

"Sorry I felt you up earlier," she said simply, letting a light shrug grace her shoulders as she moved a strand of wavy brown hair out of her face. She extended her hand and let one of her more casual grin slip to her full lips. "Maryke," she said simply.

Nita could practically hear the gears turning and twisting in Maryke's head. This woman was obviously someone who always got what she wanted, one way or another. She wondered how long it would take her to realize that what she wanted hardly mattered here.

The red panda girl withdrew her hand and met Maryke's gaze. In spite of the fur and animalistic features, Nita still felt like herself. Whether or not 'herself' was completely human was another question all together.

"Yes, well," Nita said, shrugging slightly. Being felt up like that had been distinctly weird, and she didn't want to say, 'Oh it's alright,' because it wasn't, really. But she would accept the apology. "I'm Nita."

Maryke sighed, leaning back against the bar slightly, and resting an elbow on it. She could sense the tension hanging in the air and the last thing she wanted was to go around pissing off the locals. If it was one thing she knew, it was people. And no matter how high up you were it didn't matter unless you had a leg to stand on.

"Look," she said honestly, "Clearly, we've gotten off to bad start. I..." she raised an eyebrow at the red fur once more. "..misjudged you and I'm usually not this..." she fished for the right word and then merely shrugged, "much of a b***h. Let's say I buy you a drink, hmmm?" she asked before she sighed, after hearing that outloud a new realization struck her. "My money isn't good here, is it?" a rhetorical question that she quickly followed with, "Well, why don't I fix you one then."

At least she was willing to make amends. Nita brushed her long hair out of her eyes, suddenly noticing how much Maryke resembled pictures of her own mother as a young woman. Their attitudes were radically different, but the features had a similar Latin cast.

Nita nodded solemnly. "This kind of thing is enough to make the kindest-hearted person a b***h," she said, only to crack a smile a moment later. "And uh.. yeah. No need for money here. But thanks." She looked across the bar at the cooler where she had been resting her feet. Her half-finished drink sat nearly forgotten, ice melted and probably flat.

"Rum and diet Coke is what I had before," she offered. "At least they keep this place well-stocked. And the cafeteria isn't bad, for what it is."

She chuckled at Nita's first comment and playfully retorted with, "Honey, I was born a b***h." Meant in jest, she was quickly letting her sour mood turn light as she looked around at what the bar had to offer. She looked over at Nita's drink and guessed it had already gone flat.

Thus she set about fixing her another one, sliding it over to the panda girl once she was done. "Hmmm," she murmured, wondering what it was that she could fix herself based off what was available. Settling on a straight up screwdriver when all she could really find was vodka and orange juice. Once she finished she plopped back into the seat next to Nita.

"So...'Nita'...is that short for something?" she asked, trying to make light conversation.

Nita snickered appreciatively. "I always had people say they could hardly imagine me getting angry-- and the prospect scared them." She sipped her new drink slowly, knowing that her altered metabolism worked slowly as well. Alcohol took a while to get to her, but if she crossed her limit even a little, it would hit her hard.

She held her glass up in a mocking toast. "To bitches, then," Nita quipped. Maryke's question surprised her; as far as she could remember, the only islander who knew 'Nita' was a nickname was Rex. "It's Juanita, actually," she said.

"Here, here," Maryke grinned raising her own glass to the mock toast and clanking it against Nita's lightly. At the full name she nodded, "Figured as much..." Without any more care to the name game Maryke began to rummage through the handbag she had brought with her, withdrawing a packet of luckies as she did. She pulled out a particulary nice stick and held her lighter in one hand.

"Don't mind do you?" she asked, though didn't wait for an answer before she lit up anyway. "Nervous habit...and right now..." She looked back over and chuckled, "You're not going to lunge over and eat me are you?"

She was only half serious, if even that. The more she was chatting with the girl the more she realized Nita was in fact, human. Despite the outward appearance. Hell, Mary'd hung around all sorts of types. Well...human people were just another set to add to that list she supposed. She didn't bother to remind herself that she would soon become one.
