Callista frowned. "Perhaps, but very few know of our existence, so the likelyhood that your father has studied our magic or under one of our people is not good. Unless he studied with the mages. But we're at war with the mages..."

"What are the mages like?" Valzar asked remembering something he'd read in his father's library.

Callista frowned. "Well, the Mages and the Carpathians used to be good friends. But one of the mages got jealous of the Carpathian immortality. He kidnapped one of the most beloved women, and a war broke out. The mages taught us the safeguards we use today. We've tweaked them a little, but without the mages, we would be vulnerable when we go to ground." She sighed. "The Mages were good and blessed with gifts of their own. While they don't have the immortality that we do, they had long life. They could command the elements and make terrible spells capable of helping or hurting someone. They were powerful in their own way, like my people are powerful in theirs."

"These safeguards," Valzar frowned. "I've heard my father use that term. What are they like?"

"I shouldn't tell you. It's dangerous. If a vampire caught you...I could be killed. But, I trust you. The safeguards are powerful weaves that make invisible barriers to those who don't know what they're looking for or who would try to harm us. They can bind an enemy to one spot, burn them to a crisp, or just simply keep an enemy from going any further."

Valzar frowned thoughtfully, "Can they detect emotions and intentions as well?"

Callista shook her head. "No, they can't. It is up to the setter to warn those who they care about to stay away from the lair."

Valzar nodded, "I see. I wonder if that was something he added to the basic spell...""

Callista shrugged. "I haven't a clue. I konw it is a safety measure though. Vampires can use loved ones and others to move about during the day while they must go to ground. One could attack a lair and kill."

"We have...similar problems," Valzar said quietly. "At least my younger siblings and their mother do..."

"I'm sorry. It's no fun to be hunted at every turn. Do you know any safeguards? They might help keep you and your family safe..." Callista looked worried. She didn't want anyone to hurt Valzar.

"That's good. Anything to keep you from getting hurt." She stretched a hoof to touch Valzar's, but stopped in mid motion. "I could teach you one that I use, but you would have to promise me something in return."

Valzar frowned and studied her carefully for a moment, still weary of trusting those, especially female, outside of his family. "What would you want?"

"I want you to guard yourself heavily from attacks. Mentally. I want you to be safe, but I can't just give you something without being sure. If you can build a mind block and guard yourself like I do, I'll let you have it. If not, and you still want it, I'll have to take your blood. That way I can always know what you're doing and whether or not you have turned." She stood up and walked a couple of feet away. I shouldn't do this. It's too risky. But I can't let him be open to attack either...It shouldn't matter though, but it does...
