Before Hamma could even turn back around another of the tikes was finished. Two this time. Stroking his beard and wiping the sweat from his forehead the man looked down upon the other two finished. One a new student. Dark hair and a stern look adorned her face, but it was not that the man found strange. The youngn’ had on quite the showy kimono. One that probably shouldn’t be in the line of construction, but the man would not say anything. If it made the child happy and she could do the work then there was no problem. The other was the little snow haired rascal that has been around the island for a while. The most known Ibazi on the island. “Aye! Sorri you have just as much energy. You finished fast. Why don’t you show this lass over to the other kids over there.” the blacksmith said referring to Nadeshiko. He then turned down to the girl. “Yep. You got it. Now both of you can get to mixing the concrete with the others.”. Speaking of others… “Break times almost over! All you lads and lasses be getting back to work soon or you’ll see no lunch or supper today!”. That should get them moving.

She was mildly impressed by the fact that the boy, Sorri, had indeed finished very quickly. She looked him over, and decided that Hamma was probably right about his energy. He looked like he was the type that vibrate with excitement. Nadeshiko dumped the contents of her wheelbarrow as indicated, and set about doing her next task. The thought of missing lunch actually intimidated her. She may not look it, but she was a voracious eater who couldn't function properly with an empty stomach. She started to stir a small amount of powder and water together. Mixing concrete was also something she had never attempted before. She soon discovered that it was not as easy as she had thought it would be. Her first, small attempt at it had proved, even to her unprofessional eye, too be much, much too watery.

Akiko carefully lowered her wheelbarrow to the ground. She let most of the contents pour out, but she wasn't quite done after that. She went ahead and began sorting out the different varieties of building materials. It took a bit of effort and sapped a good bit of her energy, but she managed to get the job done. She wasn't exactly sure why she did it, but she reasoned that someone would appreciate it further down the road. Just as she was dusting off her hands, though, Akemi came back with her load. She figured, since she had already set herself to the task, she might as well do the same for Akemi's load. It seemed a good deal heavier than her own. As Akiko worked, she wondered just how much the girl pushed herself. She could be a bit gruff at times, but if she worked this hard at manual labor, she may be willing to dedicate herself to a cause. When only a few pieces remained at the bottom of the wheelbarrow, she heard a clattering behind her. There was the girl she had spoken to earlier, dropping off her load. Akiko began to sweat as she began unloading the new wheelbarrow. The girl she had spoken to before... she seemed a little odd. She could tell there was something unique about her--she approached problems from a different angle, and her clothes didn't seem quite right for her. She couldn't exactly put her finger on it. Akiko wanted to know more about her, but the girl was so quiet and shy... she remembered when she was like that herself. She was new to the village, and she had just gone through a family tragedy. She wanted to stay with her mother and shut out the world. She outgrew it, but sometimes she still finds it hard to talk to people. She noticed that there seemed to be a lot of people in this village who were somewhat the same: unable or unwilling to put themselves forward and make acquaintances. The adults were fine, but a lot of the children were either surly or withdrawn. She hoped she'd find someone someday that was lighter-hearted. She had barely made a dent in the new wheelbarrow before the hospital patient came over with his load. Akiko groaned. Nobody had asked her to do this, but she was beginning to resent it nonetheless. She tried to take her mind off it by thinking about the kid. He seemed to be doing a lot better today. He's certainly vibrant, from what she could tell. But, somehow he had landed himself in the hospital the day before. From what she gathered from his condition at the time and from snippets of the nurses' conversations, she knew it had to do with overworking himself somewhere near a cliff. That would've had to hurt. She didn't know if she could push herself that hard. On one hand, it was honorable to put so much of oneself into a single task. Yet, he struck her as a little foolish and rash. She realized that she didn't really know him, though--she was just working off of assumptions. She'd have to get to know all of them if she wanted to understand what they're really like.
Suddenly, Hamma's booming voice indicated that there was only a little bit of her break left! She hadn't even taken one yet! She hurriedly sorted out the last few pieces of debris and stretched her arms out above her head. After about fifteen seconds, she thrust her stomach forward and put her hands on her back. The dull ache that ran up her spine and along both of her sides was beginning to make itself known. She leaned backward a little and, hearing a pop, decided it would be wisest to straighten back up. She cast her eyes down to the ground as she began trudging over to the concrete-mixing area, rubbing a sore shoulder as she went.

Nadeshiko tried to fix her grey-ish concoction, which, at the moment, was looking like a puddle that her father had put his socks in. She poured omse more powder in, stirred again, and it thickened. Too much though. It was now thicker and darker than tar, and could hardly be moved. One could almost hear a grinding noise as Nadeshiko's face reddened in a concentrated effort to stir it. She stopped for a moment to take a breath, and noticed Akiko (was it Akiko?) looking at her curiously. The other girl was heading in her direction at any rate, and she needed help. Nadeshiko had rudely not spoken to her earlier, so she spoke up now.
" Um...excuse me. Akiko, yes? Do you have any idea how I can fix this maybe?" As always, Nadeshiko even spoke a little funny, in her quiet, lilting little voice. It was undetectable for the most part, but sometimes, the accents and dialects she had picked up on her travels would spill onto her tongue.

[[Really sorry about time in between posts, stuff is so chaotic at my house that I can barely get on the comp for more than five minutes before going back to packing again.]]
Aranami, after rushing out out of the Tenmoki household, had gotten lost. He kept hearing the loud noise, but couldn't pinpoint where it was for quite some time. Finally getting to where the noise was coming from, he looked around at the burnt down apartment building. Whistling softly to himself on how bad it looked, he looked around, trying to find the person who was in charge. There were quite a few people working on doing various tasks, so he looked for someone who looked like they were in charge. Seeing Hamma, who looked like he could probably be in charge, Aranami went up to him and asked "What should I be doing?"

"We're working on getting the concrete mixed together now, honey," Yuki told Aranami as she walked back over to Hamma. Putting a hand on his shoulder, Yuki patted the large man who was rather tall compared to her! "Why don't you go take a nap, Hamma? You've been up all night making these plans. I think I have it under control now," the woman said in that motherly tone she had perfected over the years of tending to her own children and the children of the village. Turning to Akiko and Nadeshiko, Yuki put her hands on her hips, still holding the clipboard with one hand. "The concrete is a very dangerous substance. I want you girls to put on gloves and watch your feet. It will damage your skin if you're not careful. Use one of the spades we have sitting off to the side to mix it," the woman instructed those already working on the concrete. She then turned to Akemi, who hadn't started yet and Aranami who had just arrived. "Why don't you two take these plans and start assembling the pipe system?" Yuki said, handing the plans over to Aranami. "You'll have to screw the pipes together with a nut bolt. More than two hands are required to assemble the pipes so work together nicely, ok?" Yuki said as more of a warning to Akemi rather than Aranami. Yuki wasn't stern when she spoke, but more giving a careful reminder. Akemi had been working together with her fellow classmates ever since that brash meeting her first day in the academy.

"Oh, and Akiko, darling! The concrete is 1 part cement, 2 parts sand and 3 parts gravel," Yuki said, telling her niece the ratios for the cement. With a little cooking experience and a bit in alchemy, Yuki knew that Akiko would be able to understand what she was trying to say. This way, the girl would be able to help the one of the newest additions to the academy. Yuki knew the importance of having a sempai when growing up. Hopefully, Akemi would mold herself into one as well. She knew Akemi wasn't as soft and friendly as Akiko had become, so pairing her up with a boy was a little more suitable! "There should be a wrench over by the tools near the well, Akemi. That should help you with the nuts and bolts," Yuki said, pointing out the helpful tool to the girl.

Shinichi didn't meet Yuki's surely piercing gaze, but stared around the work site, surveying everyone's work. It wouldn't be wise to start a fight with her here, not that he would particularly mind. With no mediator to calm their fired nerves, though, there was no telling how far the fight would go. Anyway, the work was coming together nicely, so no need for him here. Well, almost. "Is it a wise idea for you to be working so hard right after yesterday, Sorri?" Shinichi asked gently and more rhetorically than expectant. Well, it was his body. So long as he didn't die or lose an important limb. The man shielded his eyes from the sun and looked about again. With the exception of pouring rocks and the occasional wall being smashed to pieces, everyone was surprisingly quiet. In fact, he'd never seen such a large group together in peacetime that was so much like mute mice. The Kage counted the kids he knew, then the ones he'd seen a few or for the first time. Ah, that was why. Nobody was really familiar with each other. "IYou guys can make the work a lot more fun if you start some conversations up," he said, "Work together. Get to know a few more people. Hell, start singing if you have to or we'll have some people dropping to sleep." Shinichi touched his brow and headed off to find the lazy butts that hadn't shown to work yet.

"Be glad to do that, Suko-sempai!" Orika chirped, swiveling on her heels to face him with a mock salute, "It'll be more fun learning it together!" She watched him stare fearfully at Yuki and turned her head, wondering what the woman had done to frighten the chuunin. There was nothing out of the ordinary. Orika turned back and the young man was already gone. It really puzzled her why people were afraid of Yuki-sensei. She was really nice and helpful! With a shrug, the girl bounced over to the ANBU and listened to their instructions. Okay, gloves, feet, and spades, got it! Orika didn't wear gloves very often and she'd left her only pair at home so one of the gloves Hamma brought would have to do. She selected the thinnest cloth, for the girl really hated to lose control over her fingers just for some extra protection. Then again... she looked down at her crusted feet and thought that it might not be a bad idea to listen to Yuki and not get her feet mixed in concrete. That would be more pain than she could handle and that was saying something!
"Righto!" Orika said with a bright smile. This job sounded like fun too. The girl dragged a few bags of sand and gravel over by the concrete and looked over the tiny girl's work so far. Ooh, that didn't look too good. "1 part cement, 2 parts sand, and 3 parts gravel," Orika muttered to herself, "That's a lot more sand and gravel than I remember." She had helped her father build the deck when she was younger and the mixture for that type of concrete stuck with her, as with all numbers and quantities associated with cooking. She wasn't a gourmet chef, but instead made an effort to learn why the quantities were as such. "Good thing you didn't start with too much," Orika giggled, "Don't worry. Once we get a lot of this stuff mixed, that little goop won't really matter. I think we should leave that alone and work out how many parts water to add. Sound good?" She scooped half a spade full of concrete into the other side of the wheelbarrow, where the two mixtures wouldn't touch, and added the right amounts of sand and gravel.

"I think the first time you tried, you added too much water too fast," Orika commented, lifting the bucket of water and measuring how much to skim off the top with her eyes, "Cause see, water is usually the uncertain ingredient. You gotta add it real slowly so you don't mess up the proportions. One quarter part water should be a good starting point." She carefully poured just a few drops of the water into the mixture and stirred with her spade. The ashy concrete powder turned a shade greyer, but was still rocky due to the vast proportions of rocks. "Are you a new student? I'm Orika in my last year at the academy. Too bad we won't be seeing each other much, eh?" Orika chatted as she added in another quarter part water and continued to stir. The smell of wet concrete reminded her of rainy snowy days, when the water would seep into the packed, frozen dirt and release whatever chemical to make that earthy odor. The girl, upon finding the mixture to still be too crumbly, added yet another quarter portion, getting a bit annoyed at how slow this process had to be. "Stick the spade through the middle, pull it out, and... nah, still too dry. See how it crumbles down the middle? The concrete's supposed to stay together on both sides. That means there ain't supposed to be water down the middle either," said Orika, wondering how she became such an expert at mixing concrete. It was really easy to her. Just a bit of this, a bit of that, some common sense, and voila! Speaking of which, after she added another quarter part of water and did the spade test again, the mixture stood like earthen walls on both sides.

"So one part water, one part concrete, two parts sand, and 3 parts gravel," Orika recited happily, setting her spade down to stretch her arms out. It was so gorgeous out here and a lot of people were working together and she got to smash walls and play with concrete and sand and well, the girl was really happy. She took off the gloves and grabbed a bite of lunch, choosing a delicious looking turkey, cheese, and vegetable sandwich. Sure, working was fun, but it was also nice to just hang back and chill for a few minutes. "You got that?" the girl asked the other girl who had been mixing concrete, "Oh, and I'd pull your hair back or something. Hair and concrete go nasty-nasty together!" As Orika ate, her mind drifted to Karite again. It wasn't like him to not show up to help out. Surely he had seen the smoke from the Tategami grounds? Unless Maya had him doing some tough training? Orika grunted and snapped at her sandwich. Ever since Hanabira broke away from their squad because she didn't feel she and Karite were 'ready' to be genin, their squad hadn't been meeting regularly. In fact, she hadn't seen her boyfriend since Hana left. Not ready to be genin? Sure, she hadn't learned all the jutsu, but she could still kick Hana's a** in any fight: brains or brawn. Well, the first one she'd have to train a little harder at, but she wasn't too far behind that nerd. Orika finished the sandwich and walked over to the wheelbarrow to add another mass of concrete materials together, stirring as she thought about their squad. She really wanted them to be happy together, but they needed a third member and far as she knew, there weren't any other genin available. Then again, she didn't know any 3 person squad except for Sukotto's and he just said he had an incomplete one! Oh...! "I'll be right back, Yuki-sama! Nice to meet you... uh... person!" Orika chirped, putting on a grin to reassure her that nothing was wrong. She was gonna find Karite and settle her anxiety once and for all!

"I... I'll try, but I'll have to see what this stuff's like first." This was promising to be quite a difficult challenge. As Aunt Yuki was telling her about how dangerous the mixture would be, Akiko shuddered. She had no clue what sort of peril lurked beneath the shifting gray surface, but her imagination filled in the gaps rather nicely. She envisioned putting her hand in and pulling it back out to find that only bones were left. Unsettled by this, she immediately reached for the protective gear and began putting it on. She then reached over and grabbed a spade, hoping that the distance between her hand and the mixture would prevent her hand from melting off. Her aunt called out the proper proportions, but it only served to confuse Akiko. She had no experience whatsoever in anything even remotely related to this, and she had no idea what her aunt was trying to say. Most importantly, what on earth was a "part"? She shrugged, absolutely clueless. She really hoped she'd get it right... after all, the quiet girl had asked her for help and was probably looking up to her for help. How could Akiko be a mentor to the girl if she herself didn't know how to do this? The pressure was certainly on. She looked over at the ingredients and found a wheelbarrow of her on in which to experiment. "I think it's something like this. I'm not sure, though," she forewarned. She used her spade to grab a little bit of cement and put it in the barrel. Then, she took two pinches of sand and three good-looking pebbles to add to the mix. Upon mixing them together, they formed a little pile of dirt that didn't look anything like the concrete she had seen. She sighed. The pressure was on, and she was crumbling apart just like her first attempt.

Just as the girl began wheeling her load of rubble toward the now rather large pile, she heard Hamma's big booming voice call out to her about mixing concrete, and as she dumped her wheel barrel's contents in the pile, she heard Tenmoki Yuki's voice call out to her and tell her to skip the concrete job and move right to pipe assembling. With a small sigh, she rubbed her temples, she wouldn't admit it out loud, but she was more inclined to listen to Yuki then Hamma... only because of her not so happy experience with the woman her first day here a few days ago.... She would rather not deal with the woman's dark side today... maybe later.
With a sigh, the girl looked around to see the who the woman had given the plans to, because she hadn't known the name that she had heard the woman say was to be working with her. She put a hand on her hip as she finally laid her eyes on the small boy that she had given the plans to, and scowled a bit to herself. To Akemi, the woman was playing favorites again, but she only thought that out of spite and the fact that the woman suggested that she get the wrench and handed over the blue prints to the scrawny boy. She mumbled incoherently to herself as she walked over to the well yet again, and this time picked up one of the metal wrenches that Yuki had pointed out, and then walked back over to the sandy haired boy. “Lets just get this done…” she mumbled to the boy, and avoiding looking Yuki in the eyes.

This didn't look right at all. She looked around helplessly, trying to find someone who might know a little more about this. She spotted Shinichi, whom she knew from his confrontations with her aunt. She didn't know much about him, but she knew that Aunt Yuki didn't get along that well with him, so by extension she wasn't that fond of him, either. He did have a point about conversation making the job go faster. "Umm, hold on, I'll get this soon..." she mentioned to the other girl, looking over her shoulder briefly. "By the way... what's your name?" Hopefully she'd be able to get the girl talking about herself. She'd learn more about the new kid, and it might distract her mind from the stresses of the construction. She also noticed one of the other workers was talking all about the project. She listened closely and began to learn a thing or two about it. For one, she had neglected to add water... not that she knew to use it. She didn't really understand what the person meant about the sides and the middle, but she did glean from the speech that the concrete wasn't supposed to crumble. The cement expert used the term "part", too. What exactly did that mean? Perhaps it didn't really mean a part of the ingredients... maybe a part of the mixture? But then, that would mean the mixture would be made up of seven parts: three gravel parts, two sand parts, and one part each of cement and water. She had no idea what three parts out of seven looked like... but that raised another question. What did seven parts look like? She couldn't imagine, but she supposed she didn't need to do so. Technically, seven parts could be as big as she wanted, so long as three of them were gravel and so forth. Then, that would mean the parts would have to be roughly the same size... or would they? She still didn't know how much a single part was... so she had to make it up. She looked at her puny little pile from before and shook her head. What an idiot she was! Three little pebbles in the middle of all that other stuff wasn't even close to right! She rectified this immediately and loaded it up with the correct proportions of dry ingredients. She was about to just throw the water in, but she remembered that the expert said it should be added slowly. She gradually poured in water and mixed with the spade. It began to come together in the bottom of the wheelbarrow... not much, but it looked similar to the example she saw. "Oh, hey!" she exclaimed, "I think I got it... maybe. Come look at this," she beckoned to the girl behind her.

Aranami nodded at Yuki when she gave him the blueprints, and turned and smiled at Akemi. Aranami was glad that he was only given one partner, even though such a big group overall kinda put a damper on his spirits. Hearing her mumble about getting it done, he nodded slightly. He walked over to the well and set up the blueprints so that both of them could easily see it. "Uhmm, hmmm..." He said, looking at the blueprint with a confused look on his face. "I think... I think I have no clue." He flatly stated looking at the blueprints. "Possibly this piece, but... I'm not sure." He said while looking at a piece that looked kinda like the piece that they should start with in the blueprints. "You any good with this kinda thing?" He asked as he looked over at Akemi.

Nadeshiko screwed her delicate features over in frustration. She simply stopped attempting to mix the stubborn grey goop to listen to what everyone else was saying. Yuki made it a lot clearer and a good deal easier saying that it was best for the concrete mixture to be stirred with a shovel, which Nadeshiko promptly kicked up from a nearby pile of now abandoned tools, and began to remix the cement, which, at the moment, resembled nothing faintly like cement and inspired minimal confidence. Another man, who Nadeshiko couldn't catch the name of but had gotten a feeling that he was important, seemed to be taking a look at what everyone was doing and advised them to socialize. Not her strong point, but even Nadeshiko could feel the unsettling gloomy quiet of the silent crowd. And then a muscular girl hopped over and began buzzing around her. Nadeshiko was tempted to tell her to be quiet so that she could hear herself think, but she found that the other girl was actually quite helpful. Akiko tried to help too, but she appeared to be just as lost as Nadeshiko herself was. The little girl attempted to put everyone's advice together, and found, to her great surprise, that the mixture came out looking and feeling like real cement. Nadeshiko was so happy that she squealed and even did a little happy dance.
