Essay topic:World issues. Issue: Low self esteem in females towards physical appearance
Many young females constantly strive for the perfect body. Social status,in large or small amount, is extremely important to many young females. Most social cliques and overall society judges the body verbally and through body language . Often, the more beautiful the person is,the more likely it is that they will be accepted into society sexually and socially.
In a sense, all females strive for a better looking body. We fix our hair, some of us wear makeup, a few will wear clothing that falsely adds a small amount of curve to breasts, and quite a few us even go to get surgery done to improve the overall facial structure or to achieve breast enhancements. Even still, females
often find themselves unsatisfied with their overall appearance. However, while most women learn to love their bodies eventually, many still drown in depression and anxiety caused by the fear of social rejection and worthlessness.
According to
CNN (2000), "more than 70 percent of self-injurers are women mostly between the ages of 11 and 26." Most people who practice self mutilation do it to take the control over the body and release the emotional scaring left by low self esteem, abuse, and anxiety. However,to avoid this, many seek out other ways to control their bodies in an attempt to seek their own acceptance.
Statistics show that 1 in 5 women struggle with an eating disorder and 90% of those who have one are women between the age of 12 and 25.
Media tells women that eating disorders are wrong and self injury is pathetic, yet the media still tells them that their BMI's are too high and gives them diets that hardly ever work. While the issues in
obesity are growing, one cannot ignore the constant damage to the average female's view of her body. Media focuses on appearance rather than the health of the female and her personality in general. It puts forth the idea that the underweight body is the most attractive, even though it is horribly unhealthy. The female body to me , however, is beautiful in every way. Bodies, whether they be slim or thick, are all amazing inside and out. Every muscle and every bone are constructed perfectly to enable beautiful figures to strike a pose and move towards a better life. Health care professionals know when one needs to lose weight, not the media.
Perhaps if women could put the remote down and encourage first themselves and then others to appreciate our bodies, then the issue of poor self esteem would be slowed down. The support groups are often helpful, but they aren't the main source for healthy appearance and high self esteem. It is always up to the individual to accept help, professional advice, and make creative decisions. Even now strong, confident women everywhere are reaching for their destroyed peers in an effort to demolish the condescending views of the popular media, but it is up the individual to choose who influences her out look, look into the mirror, and see the gorgeous, intricate body that she was graced with at birth.
