Not me. I just started on the mouth piece. My mother used to play my flute, so I just asked for her help. It was pretty easy for me.

We never used essential elements. Our band teacher now uses it on the sixth graders, but we never got it. We used "the red book". Our old band teacher just had some good tricks.

Thanks for the input. I'll try that. Oh, and nice signature, pickle relish! I wonder where that came from?

My BD goes to elementary school as recruits 5th Graders, and uses Essential Elements with them until sixth grade. .People who weren't in band in 5th Grade get to be in Beginning Band in middle school, where the book isn't really needed.

FLUTES ARE NOT MEANT TO PLAY JAZZ. -hyperventilates-
My BD plays jazz trumpet for a living, and all we've played this year (besides our Festival march) has been jazz. It makes me want to slap him!I don't particularly hate jazz, but it's getting ridiculous. Flutes aren't even supposed to play jazz. It doesn't sound right. ):

One of the other bands is playing swing, and it was weird trying their music. And one of the High School Jazz Bands sounded pretty good, and it was mainly saxes...

We have a seperate jazz band, in which I play saxaphone, unless there is a specifically written out flute part. However, my BD hates jazz flute, so I don't get to play it very often.

exactly, we had to sightread 2 pieces of jazz based for the saxes, and we didn't do hardly anything, and it just didn't fit with the type
