I like my section leaders, but whenever one of them is missing, they both seem to be missing, so I get stuck playing first part by myself. I had to play a solo I had never seen before at a football game because neither one of them showed up. Other than that, though, I love my section leaders.

pickle relish Symphony_Flute708 pickle relish Hmmm. I am a alto player for jazz band. But we have enough altos, so I can't get kicked off flute. Well, you can play flute outside of your bands... and I don't like my section leader because she's not very good. It's not fair, Tracy Foley should be section leader, she's pretty nice, and she's better than Hannah. Well, our section leader, Auriel, is the best player. After that is Abby, the only junior, and then me (again, with the vanity, but also truthfulness). Abby will be section leader next year, which is quite fine by me. She is my best friend, and a good player, so I will not begrudge her right as section leader. At least Abby is good. Hannah doesn't even really play, she's always doodling in her notebook when we have to play. She's one of those people sitting in the band room thinking, "I'm just here because I am, I don't even care," and yet... she's section leader....

You should be in band because you enjoy it. And the section leader should be the best and most focused, devoted player.

Like my friend Marissa. She should be section leader, she and Jusel are always trying and they play the best the most. (if that makes sense)

As in, they don't always play the best, but they do most of the time? Our section leaders are decided by grade. Seniors are section leaders. But if the senior can't play the solol, I'm pretty sure our director will give it to someone else.

I mean, they're the best out of all of us most of the time.
Section leaders of the next year are chosen by sections leaders of the current year. So Hannah (flute), along with other section leaders will have to decide for instrument. All section leaders will have to decide for a certain instrument. That is, if someone in band next year is close to Hannah and isn't very good, it prevents that person from being section leader because the rest have to say somehting about it.
And us? All we have to do is write an essay and sight-read something in an audition.

I want to, and I proably will get it because Marissa and Jusel don't want to audition. They're never playing alone.

all it takes is a little practice (try with the head joint only though). if you get the embachure (sp?) down, it'll be easier when you learn fingerings.

Yeah, it would be easier. I first tried with a wine bottle, then the head joint, then I learned the fingerings!
