i don't know, raffles TO ME sound a little (by which i mean a lot) pretentious. like you assume people will pay money just to be considered for a commission. that, plus the point you raise about popularity on DA getting you money for doing absolutely nothing. seems like such a "sellout" thing to do. maybe i'm reading too much into it. i think an auction (depending on who is participating) could be more successful. didn't you host auctions with different artists grouped up before? that seemed like it went well while it was up. the downside to that, of course, is having to manage this group of people and being on top of them with due dates. another thing that generally sells well is auctioning sketch books. it's a lot of work for some people, but you get pretty decent money out of it and generally you get to draw whatever you want as long as the buyer's characters are the subjects in those images. as a buyer, i would be into purchasing a sketchbook or something like a pair of sneakers or a handbag which has been drawn on by an artist whose work i really enjoy. if 3 people got together and did that, i would bid down to my undies. i'm not really into the digital work thing much anymore. i like tangible objects. i bought a phone from ChungaMunga a while back and i call candyland, santa and miley cyrus on it with my niece all the time. it is pretty awesome. as far as a cause goes, unless someone is a good friend of mine or they need the money for serious medical reasons and they's having trouble gathering funds - i don't care what they're raising the money for. for their cat, because they need it to buy textbooks, pay their light bill, buy a new lamp, etc i don't care - you figure it out. that doesn't sway my judgment at all. maybe i'm not compassionate enough, but i figure that i worked my way through art school/life without having to ask strangers for money and so can anyone else haha.

Before I address anything you've said I've got to say: what a cool-looking 'phone. I had no idea you were on such close terms with Santa and Miley Cyrus ...
I guess people go into these raffle things (the rafflers, that is) as a matter of how desperate they are and how limited their options are. I suppose I feel a bit torn about it, really - a few of the people who have done this are associates of mine and I worry about their situation, but then I think about the squidillions of people who have it worse and I do think about where my charity dollars are better spent. Hm.
Amazingly, perhaps, the managing people hasn't been too bad - only a handful of people are yet to finish their pieces, which is pretty incredible given that out of almost thirty individuals maybe only two or three of them actually knew the person the auctions were benefitting.
Compassion is over-rated? I'm probably a bit spiteful because when people start getting offended or impolite (for whatever reasons) in their donation/raffle sales pleas, I won't go in for it. I don't know - rudeness offends me (;
Anetra: It probably isn't wise to give me webspace - I'm one of those people who gets excited about it for the first few days and then leaves a half-done website up for the next four years (argh, and so on). Thank you for the offer, though - you've reminded me I should probably have a proper gallery up somewhere again (;
Anyway, that's a good idea about sketches for ticket buyers, although for the people who hold these things their popularity probably prohibits them from doing them (well, only in that they would have a million to do and I'm guessing one of the more attractive things about raffles is that they only require one piece of artwork be produced).

Phone, I am jealous for the phone.
Raffles, One could, then, do inter-raffle raffles. Every ten tickets, one person gets a sketch. This guarantees people who buy ten tickets a sketch, and then anyone buying less has their whatever chances. But that may be getting ridiculous and convoluted. Making things into such appears to be my speciality.
It is certainly true that the raffle-holders see the appeal as "I only have to do one piece for XYZ moneys," but I also think that approaching it with that philosophy, and thus executing it suchly, is a little underhanded. You leave a lot of people who pay money for nothing, as others have said before me, and this is a reason I would likely never purchase raffle tickets myself. If they got me a slightly overpriced sketch with my h;ance of completion I'd be tempted, though.
Gallery, & Yes, you must get a proper gallery set up! I want to look at all your pictures. I flipped through the commissions folder of your deviant art favourites last week, but I know that's nowhere near being complete. D:

Re: raffles. Lavah held one recently - I didn't follow it too closely but I think she didn't make the minimum number of ticket sales she wanted (seventeen or so, maybe? I think that's how much she valued the commission she was offering) and ultimately cancelled the rafffle. I believe as a payback to those who did buy tickets she offered sketches? It seems like that would have been a quicker and more guaranteed method of dosh-raising, but I guess if you need a lot of money quickly it might seem daunting to take on so many commissions at once (although I think if people doing that sort of thing are upfront with a realistic schedule of how long it will take them to do it, most people are pretty patient ... I hope <- not an artist; I don't really know).
I do have a gallery and I kind of update it ... sometimes (; I've been in the middle of revamping it for ... a year, maybe?

Another gripe!
Well, my raffle gripe wasn't so much a gripe as it was a half-hearted I'm-not-sure ...
Anyway, Paypal fees. When I pay for commissions via Paypal I almost always pay additional dosh for fees - the only times I don't is when I forget to figure it out. I almost always pay with a credit card, so I appreciate that part of the payment disappears when it's sent because of that.
That said, I'm noting people asking for commissioners to pay for fees regardless of whether they use a credit card, which is baffling as one isn't charged fees when existing Paypal funds are transferred between accounts. I know fees are charged when you withdraw the money from your Paypal account to your bank, but I hardly think that's the responsibility of the commissioner. Am I wrong? (That it's against Paypal's rules for people to ask customers to cover fees doesn't really concern me too much.)
Although now that I've said this I realise the reason it irked me so much is because the person demanding it was quite rude about how they put it ... maybe the problem is rudeness more than fees. Kids these days .

I couldn't look at those breedables and not think of you - frankly, I can't look at anything with a name of a character from this guild and not think "that doesn't belong to you! It belongs to [enter guild member's name here]!".
On an unrelated note ... have people being commissioning less lately? Or just not hanging around the guild because no one else is? Grown out of art and/or Gaia? I'm just curious ...

Poor poor Woe xd
I've been busy tending to my art contest which just ended, so haven't been commissioning. Occasionally pop by to the guild but noticed it was deader than my rotting body, so didn't post.
Should be posting some of the art I received 3nodding

I've been doing a number of art trades recently on another forum I'm on, but other than that, I've kind of dropped off the face of the Gaia/DA artworld. >.<; School and whatnot. I'm buckling down on my portfolio.

I have a bunch of commissions I'm still waiting on. A final one from Nashya, Kuroitora, Kiriko, uh-. I think a few other real-money ones. A .. uh, couple, on Gaia, but it's such a pain in the a** to find people worth commissioning on Gaia. Everything is so geneeeeric anime huge eyes sparkly fairy dust.
Anyway, I'm really broke right now, haa, bought a laptop and have to pay for international collect calls from prison now (blaggh), so I can't afford to buy any more pictures other than what I'm waiting on now. Soon, though. Ssssoooooon...
