Totally awesome? It was a total cesspool of cybering. xp

Lol I actually joined gaia because of the cute pixel art in the minishops. Artwhore from the beginning.

Memories...
I haven't been very active here since 2005 actually.

Cute story: I met my boyfriend at gaia ^_^ On the first anniversary in 2004. We accidentally broke in to the party forum before it opened.
Silly how we now both dislike the site so much. He got banned in March 2004 for no reason (think of all the halo's left in his frozen account now crying ) and I was hacked multiple times that summer. It is very embaressing to tell people how we met at an avatar site. We try to avoid mentioning it if we can.

I remember when Gaia had a link list and there was a specific section for Hentai/porn so it's not like they tried hard to keep it off the site back then. You can't really blame members for using personals as internet booty calls when that's kind of how rl personals work XD

And weren't people using the "hangouts" feature to cyber as well? (those came out briefly in...2005?) and that's why they were taken off the site? Or was that just cause they were kind of glitchy?

I don't remember the hangouts feature, but probably hahaha. Now we just have the chatterbox threads, "Girls sleep over, boy sneak in!!!"

Yeah, they were the little one on one chat things that popped up and you could send kisses/pokes/hugs and stuff.

They used to have toooooooooons of those threads and some bondage house ones in Barton Town. xd It's hard to find good RP on Gaia outside the breedables forum.

Anetra, your new name always throws me off. I see it in the last person who post column and I'm like "who is this person?" and then I remember and feel dumb sad

So ... request threads: worth it/not worth it?

I'm thinking about starting another one (possibly with other people who have a similar inkling that they should have a thread somewhere on Gaia but they might not visit it very regularly and it won't be a big deal if they don't ...) and I'm just wondering what people think about the whole request thread lark.

I am not nerd enough for your reference, Anetra! That fills me with a mixture of sadness and joy.

Audley- I haven't been to mine in....ages. I have no idea what the R&C is like anymore sad

That helps (;

Edited to add: I'm also curious about what people think about raffles on dA. Is that a waste of dosh? Do you feel more inclined to buy tickets if it's to help a cat rather than a person?

Request threads ....

Ah.

Speaking as an artist, I dig them.
I don't like opening a "shop" thread on Gaia because then I have to maintain it and I can't be so picky-choosy with whose characters I want to draw without coming off as a jackass.
I can just cruise around the R&C if I'm in the mood to draw something for fake Gaia money until I find one I like with an online maintainer.
The online maintainer bit is important, mind -- when I post in request threads it's always a "spur of the moment" thing. I don't keep tabs on PMs well, and if I'm looking for a request thread it's because I'm going to start right at that moment. If I have to wait for a response, chances are I won't feel like doing it anymore by the time the thread maintainer returns.

Speaking as an art commissioner/what have you, I think they're an enormous waste of time.
You have to keep it bumped constantly for anyone to ever have a chance of seeing it, and even then - unless you feel like commissioning any and everyone regardless of talent level and style, you'll just find yourself saying "not interested" 99% of the time.
I've found that even if I make a request thread titled "seeking CG-colour single character bust picture with background," the people who post to reply will still quote me their full body no background prices, and ask me "do you want colour or not?" This is highly annoying.
I don't think I've ever gotten any really good pieces through a request thread. :S

it seems like the people who reply to request threads are the same ones you don't want to commission haha. the best way to find people might be to get someone active on gaia to do the work for you. you pay them a certain amount in gold for finding artists for you. the person would PM artists, ask about availability and fees then forward the information to you. i know a couple of inactive people who do that and it makes a lot of sense. a gaia secretary haha.

As a commissioner - I like having a thread I can link to for character profiles because it's nicely organized, and artists like having profiles to look at (at least, i do.). But, I notice they don't get the attention of the artists whose caliber I want (which is, mostly auction quality... but now it's getting towards real-money quality because I bought some RL ones this summer, and they're just baller in comparison to most of the things I've found on Gaia). So, mainly, it becomes a good reference - even for RL commissions (although, some artists will be like "LOL UR ON GAIA.").

As an artist - I like surfing, browsing other peoples' OCs, but I tend not to respond to request threads unless they have a "Artists I Want" section, and my name is listed (actually, that's one of the only way to get art from me on here these days). But then again, as a not-standard animu artist, I just expect rejection when I apply to those. But what am I saying? I haven't taken a Gaia commission in over a year.

As a selfish human being - I want you to open a request thread so I can read more about your characters. OTL Castor = <3.

As for the cat thing... lol... I know what you mean. I think, though, the people in question are so popular no matter what they would have done, they would have raised the required amount.

But as for buying raffle tickets, myself, a cause is a cause. Unless it offends me, then the raffle prize is what would determine how many I buy. If a friend is involved, I may buy a couple to help them out, but if it's something I'd want, then I'd get more. I'm more likely to help someone I know personally.

That said, it's pretty hard to get COMMISSIONS when you need them unless you undercharge yourself. o.O Haha, I saw the cat thing, and I was like "OTL if they can do it, maybe I can too? but haha, I've never been anywhere near the DA front page" because at that time, I needed the same amount of money.

I feel, though, that raffles will, in general, if you have a lot of views, do better than auctions because more people will give. But if you have only a few people but they really want the prize, then an auction will be more lucrative. (Think mass versus niche marketing.)

I agree with everything everyone has said - it does mostly seem like a bit of a waste of time, and I can't say that in the threads I've looked at recently that many people have actually commissioned artists who post in their threads. I think it's mostly you good artists who manage to attract other good artists with trades or interest in your characters (;

Mostly when I browse request threads I'm looking to see who other people have commissioned, and if they offer real dosh commissions then I go that route. I also like to check out other people's characters and see what their backstory is.

Colour me flattered (; I had a request thread once upon a time ... but I was hopeless and let it languish between updates.

Regarding cat raffles - I actually wasn't thinking of that one in particular when I posted, but that is probably the most prominent cat raffle/commissioning dealio that's gone on lately (;

I kick myself that you sorted your financial dealings before I was able to commission you (although obviously it's good for you) - alas, work eats most of my life these days and I have about a squidillion messages in my devwatch.

As for how I personally feel about raffles ... I have mixed feelings - there are so many people clamouring for commissions at the price most of the tickets sell for ($5 or $10) that it seems a bit disheartening someone could get that amount for nothing when another artist would actually produce a sketch or whatever for the same amount.

Now that I have most of the more glaring problems sorted out with my domain again, if you want some easy net space to shove some stuff onto, Aud, I could hook you up.
They're being dicks about subdomains (and by "being dicks" I mean "insisting I don't have any,") so I can't offer you a swankkindof url like that, would have to just be a folder name
eroding.net/watever

I'm pretty sure you have images hosted elsewhere and such, oui? Online gallery sort of deal. Which would make that just html format/layout images that'd need being.

And of course, you'd have to type up all that coveted informationstuffins.

Actually that's an interesting idea. Were I ever to do a raffle type thing, which I wouldn't because it wouldn't get the attention and would never go anywhere, one could offer all ticket-buyers a sketch, and then the winner(s?) get their sketches finished.
