Some of the children were wandering off towards the trees, and Elnara called them back. Until they knew they valley, she didn't want them wandering off on their own.

Ulani led them towards a bridge and across the river. The river itself wasn't very wide or very deep, but the bridge went high across it.
"Up past the treeline there," she pointed, "is where we train our horses ... or rather, Ulrich does now. I don't want to take Aliya around the horses just yet, not until she's a bit older. Not until they're broken at least."

Lore nodded, he had ridden a horse, but only a few times. He never could growing up, it was something he learnt from the shrine, and it was rare to have horses in the city. It would be interesting to see them though he thought.

Ulani led them to the edge of a wide open meadow, where the grass was nearly up to their waists. The younger children, she reflected, could easily get lost in there: she hoped that Elnara had them all close. There were no fences; they had never had fences. They had never needed them.
"There," she nodded towards a rather sizable herd or mixed colours. There were about a dozen blacks, a few chestnuts, several bays, a paint, and even a few whites.
"We had a unicorn at one time," she murmured, "but ... no longer."

"A unicorn?" Lore inquired.
There was a thought, he had never seen one, but then again it wasn't like he travelled all over the world. He had seen and read enough stories about them though.

Elnara glanced sharply at Lore.
"I had forgotten," she murmured. "Unicorns ... aren't common in Gaia, if they're there at all." She looked at him thoughtfully. "How do you like traveling?" she asked curiously.

"Hmm... well enough I suppose," Lore trailed off.
It wasn't that he disliked travelling, and he would have said only it felt akward to say aroudn Ulani. The thing was, Lore had never travelled for pleasure before, all of his travels were for business, from home, to home, to demon slay or purfication with Umi. Never for the sake of travelling.

"Perhaps someday we can go see the unicorns, then, if you'd like," Elnara offered with a smile. "Triton and I went there last time I was here, with my brother, Gion. I think Triton actually had one talk to him ... a foal."
That had just been an amazing moment, and one of the few that she remembered with pleasure from her last visit here.

"A foal talked to him?" Lore blinked and tried to imagine.
The sight must have been something, if no one else than for Triton to be that close. He wondered how that happened.

"Don't look at me!" Elnara grinned. "We thought we were going to be trampled, or something - but it just ... came up to us and started talking to Triton. Wanted to know what he was, I think. Curiosity. I know unicorns are curious by nature, and very playful ... though I thought they would be more shy than otherwise, from what I had been taught."
She shrugged one shoulder. "Guess not."

"Well... if it was very young, curiousity would sometimes win out," Lore offered.
Though he had never heard of anything like that before, so it did sound very amazing, but then again. To be fair if he put in perspective, a man with cat ears and tail was amazing to them.

"I never knew you went to Rainbow Valley," Ulani commented curiously. "Did you happen to catch the unicorn's name, or his sire or dam?"
After all, unicorns had relatives too, and she had known a few in her time.

"Well, we did have a hasty departure," Elnara shrugged, blushing slightly. "And no, I never spoke with the unicorn, and I don't know if it gave Triton any names at all."
She rubbed at the back of her neck awkwardly. It had been right after that amazing encounter that she'd been forced to leave her home and her family.

Lore watched her curiously as he took her hand, the one she was using to rub the back of her neck with so she would stop figeting. It seemed like something else happened, but he wasn't going to ask.

Ulani didn't miss the movement, but she didn't mention it either. She knew what it meant. Instead, she smiled and started heading off in another direction.
"Off this way is mostly forest, until you come back to the houses again," she said, changing the seemingly painful subject. "And that's ... most of the valley, which is good, considering it looks like the sun is going down." She laughed softly.
