With almost all of the small band of scouts dead, the rest fled back towards their comrades, and Kareswen grabbed hold of her horse, remounting in a fluid motion before the horse came to a stop. "We better get going before the rest of them get here." She called to the others, "They're quite fast when they can see the target and if they catch us, we're dead meat."

Ranu looked around, cursing again. The loss of his horse hurt badly. As they left Minas Tirith, it had fallen in mid sprint. The Ranger sighed, drinking his soup. Why had he stayed here? The other men had fled. Fleeing hadn't sounded so good to Ranu then. Tilting his head back, his hood fell back, revealing his pitch black hair. Finishing his drink, Ranu moved to draw on his pack, kicked and over the fire then left, heading north.

"Aye," Replied Venerah, also mounting on her mares saddle. Once she was comforatable, she winced. The wound on her shoulder didn't look terrible, but it burned like hell. Ven bit her lip and stuck it to the man.

Wheeling her horse about, Kareswen sped into a canter, sheathing her sword as she rode. Now the horse was getting used to her as its rider, it was behaving. Kareswen was vaguely irritated that Kar wasn't around to watch. "What happened to Kar?" She called to Venerah.

[Where are you two?]
Ranu's silent footfalls stopped suddenly. He looked out at the dead marshes. His heart fluttered. He hadn't seen it since he'd passed her with Nonnah. Where had she, Amerok, and Elrothiel gone? He missed them. Terribly.

I"M COMPLEATLEY CONFUSED....} Venerah shrugged. "He probley ran off, knowing him."

[I thought it was. I put Ranu in under the belief this was just after Sauron reclaimed the ring. His blood would have him living a lot longer anyway.]

[Erm... we crossed the ruins of Osgiliath a short time ago and are now on the Gondor side, except it is no longer Gondor. The elves are all supposed to have left, so I'm guessing Elrothiel will have gone to the Grey Havens with the others.]
Kareswen rolled her eyes. "Typical." She looked around. "Where are we going to go and hide for the day?"

Ranu sighed as he looked out, seeing where Mirkwood had been. He turned away. He remembered when he'd sung with those people. Now they were dead or gone. Reaching up to discover the reason for his blurred vision, he found himself weeping. He hurried south, away from old friends.

[THIS THREAD WILL NOT DIE AGAIN!]
Hollow footsteps rang through the deserted Minas Tirth again as Ranu settled back into his hiding hole on the remains of the battlements. He looked out sadly towards Mordor. They'd been so damn close, and now would anything beat the Dark Lord? Ranu turned his hands over in his lap where they lay, thin and frail looking in the red light. TABHe continued to look at the hands, frowning at them as if he felt they could do something, or wasn't doing something they should be. He gave a faint laugh at an idea. What di d he expect to do? Slice the ring of the dark hand? He looked out to the west. What did he have left? His real family had left him for the havens. He stood slowly, moving to the edge of the battlements, looking down. What if he ended it here? All the heartache their leaving had torn into him? All the sorrow that flooded his body from when he left them. It stalked him from dusk to dawn. Why not end it? He drew back, heading for the storage places. Rations for a city, but feasts for one man. He would cram several packs. He would have his suicide run, but it may even make a song if he was lucky. He went to prepare.

Kareswen worked the horse hard across the plains, testing his paces as he adapted to her control. He was better than she'd first assumed, despite being skittish. She reined in as the walls of Minas Tirith came into view. She felt the usual pang of hatred for the sight. The deserted city held too much of the dead in it for her to have been back since the fall. The city where, if fate had not intervened, she would have died. She cursed the impulse that had lead her out. And she had not been back since.
But now she paused. Had she earned the right to walk among their ghosts now that she had slain orcs in Ithilien, orcs at Osgiliath and orcs in the plains? She reflected bitterly that they would not be avenged until Sauron's armies were wiped off the face of middle-earth, but she couldn't achieve that alone - or even with Nonnah's help, if she even turned out to be obsessed with their destruction to the extent Kareswen was. To her surprise, she suddenly wanted to see it again. On an impulse, she suddenly directed her horse towards the walls.

Bells rang softly as the wind picked up, fluttering the ribbons in them. Ranu glanced up at them with hollow eyes, not taking the sound in as he returned to his task.

Kareswen dismounted to enter the main gate, leading her horse as she eyed the nearest buildings warily. She had no idea whether there were enemies here or not. She tied her horse's reins to the broken gate and proceeded on foot. She did not know the horse wll enough to trust it if it came to life and death.

(Damn schoolwork in the way again, but Summer soon!! Sorry again...)
Venerah saw Kareswen dismount and repeated her movments. She Followed her briskly. This place gave her the creeps, like the spirits where being disturbed by their footfalls. She gulped and placed her hand on the butt of her sword. She never did like it here.
