"Well," Progolo said in response to Taal's unusual bravery. "You're getting touchy."

Taal hissed again. Progolo, slightly amused, reached over and pulled the jacket off of Taal's head.

"There, better?"

The griffin looked frantically around the lodge, his eyes comically large. Progolo laughed. "C'mon, you doof. You can go outside now."

He followed the other Keepers outside, Taal following warily. While the aerandir floundered in the ash, the others discussed the changed landscape. Progolo peered into the distance, trying to see if any of the huts were damaged.

Anthony looked out after the other guardians. He was still a little dazed by the events and simply followed on, grabbing a bucket on his way. He could see only soot and darkness in his vision and even though the ash had cleared, the sky itself was fading into a deep, red sunset.

He stopped on the opper steps of the Lodge looking out over the Island. The Lodge was a little higher up than the rest of this part of the Island and, as he heard murmering about the sandbar, he realised that it was true. Extending out from the Island, just below the village, was a huge area of sand which seemed, as far as he could see, to stretch to Cetalu. Who knew how safe or crossable it would be from close by, though?

He quckly followed the guardians "Be careful" he warned them "the damage doesn't look... extensive but the houses could have been made unsafe by the quakes." He sighed a little at the destruction. So soon after he had gotten here, too.

Abbey sidled into the building nervously, peeking around the main door. She paused at the entrance, politely asking the pointedly silent room, "Is anyone in?"

False rambled in with much less reserve, whispering past Abbey into the room. With a sigh, the girl closed the door behind her. She was hoping someone would be in - it had, after all been awhile since she had last been in Ar'Idil, and she was hoping to be filled in on recent events. Indeed, the island seemed drastically changed from what she remembered it as. She should've probably visited one of her neighbours directly, but she had to send mail anyway. Again, there was an imminent nervousness towards the reactions to her disappearance, but the concern is quickly put aside.

Her Aerandir impatiently nipped at her leg, croaking indignantly, and Abbey smiled down at him and nudged him with her leg, "Go on, love."

He snapped his beak, and sprung off to gambol around the room and make general mischief. Abbey watched him attempt to clamber onto a table, then sighed and made her way over to a chair.

In hope of finding someone with more knowledge than herself on the matter of 'glowing jars', Emi cautiously ran up the stairs. She halted just before opening the door, bringing her hand up to the doorknob. Blue orbs glanced over the windows which she'd closed all those weeks ago. She'd barely been back to the lodge for anything except food and water since, but this was an emergency. Blanche might be in danger.

Pulling the door open half way, she held the door open to let the old dog in first. Holding Blanche close to her chest, the anthro look a look around the place. It all looked the same, wait no it didn't. Emi faltered for a few moments, thought of turning back, thought of turning around and running home. Ears pinning to her skull, she let the door behind her slide to a close.

Toby slid in behind his guardian, muzzle to the ground. Staying close to her legs, his brown orbs raised, cocking his head to one side as his gaze fell on the Aerandir clambering onto the nearest table. Etching one white paw forwards, the dog's tail slowly thumped from one side to the other behind him.

"Hello? Sorry to disturb." Emi started. As always, she spoke rather rapidly. It seemed to be a habit when the furry was nervous, and it was a habit she needed to kick out. A faint smile reached her cheeks, wrapping both arms around the Aerandir held close to her chest. Now, back to the matter in hand.

Both False and his keeper twitched at the sound of the turning doorknob. Abbey didn't recognise who came in the moment after, but from the look of the (glowing) jar, it was another Aerandir owner. She smiled reassuringly, thankful for the company, "No, not at all. You're not disturbing anything."

Her Aerandir was less welcoming, momentarily torn between an avid curiousity of the dog, and doubt of the safety of the strangers. He settled for scrambling across the table and tumbling into his keepers lap. Abbey picked him up, cuddling him to her chest, and returned her attention to the stranger, "Come in, come in. You're an Aerandir keeper, right?"

Picking her paws up to avoid tripping over the dog, the young woman clicked in the back of her throat. Her large ears pinned right back to her skull, attentively making her way over. Finding her way into another chair, she sat on the edge of her seat, clutching onto the jar within her grasp.

"Thanks, sorry." Emi started, shaking her head a moment later. Her tail twitched, twirling around the edge of one darker brown ankle. Blue orbs glanced down at the rather curious gryphon the guardian held, and then back up to her face. The connection was quickly met, she might just know. Exhaling a breath, Emi started.

"Yes I'm a keeper...But, Blanche started glowing earlier, and I know glowing can be a good thing but I'm rather worried. So I went and checked up in an old book of my Father's which holds most myths about Gaia, and there wasn't anything in there other than glowing objects can mean...Can mean things are about to blow up," Speaking rather quickly, Abbey would have to listen carefully to catch every single word. Waving one hand in the air above her lap, the guardian's large ears twitched lightly. Taking a large gulp of air, she continued on.

"I think I've done something awfully wrong. I'm so sorry, but do you know what happens when the jar glows?" She questioned, her gaze transferring to False's guardian for help. Her dark brown fingertips clutched lightly onto the jar, afraid it really would blow up if she let it go for a few moments.

Toby on the other hand didn't quite share his owner's anxieties. Pawing his way after her, he collapsed by her feet. Resting his muzzle down onto her feet, his ears cocked right up on top of his head. It was as if he was listening to every word, his tail slowly thumping from one side to the other in agreement.

Abbey waited patiently for Emi to finish, trying to keep up with the fastpace monologue.

When she spoke, her voice was calm and measured, "It's not an unnatural part of the Aerandir's lifecycle. False's - that is, my Aerandir," she glanced down at the creature in her arms rather fondly, "his jar began glowing a day or two before it exploded. Then False emerged, no problem."

After she finished talking, the girl let False venture out of her grasp, as he dropped off her lap and approached Toby. Head tilted, he pawed the dog cautiously.

Emi's ears flickered right back to her skull, the brown tips dislodging a section of her mousy brown hair. The fur just around her cheeks suddenly darkened, the soft beige pelt burning a darker shade of cream. Her eyes went back to the jar, stroking her thumb gently over the edge of the glass. A small smile perked on her lips, glancing up at Abbey. She must have thought herself to be an idiot.

"So, the jar just exploded, and then False emerged? Sorry, you must think I'm an idiot," She questioned once more, taking a double check. The last sentence was hushed, the guardian rubbing the edge of Blanche's jar out of pure nervousness. Out of the corner of her eye she watched the gryphon fall down from the guardians lap, only to paw at Toby. Tail de-curling from around one ankle, the anthro slid back into the chair. So Blanche wasn't about to die, thank goodness.

Toby watched the young one approach. Tail continuing to wag, he moved one of his white paws to gently paw back at the gryphon's creamy paws. His own ears twitched, head cocking to one side to match False's.

"He's lovely." Emi commented, finally mustering the ability to let a brief smile meet her face.

Abbey watched Emi's reaction with vague dismay at having embarrassed the other, "No no, not at all. I was so stressed when False's jar started glowing, as well. Well, my friends' jars started glowing around the same time, so I figured it wasn't uncommon."

False, assured of the safety of the two strange ones finally begun to relax, and he nipped playfully at Toby's paw and bounded around the dog.

"Isn't he?" Abbey replied to Emi's comment, watching her charge, "And your dog is lovely too. I love animals... Ah, I don't think I got your name?" Her gaze returned to Emi, "I'm Abbey. Absinthium Jeminea, but usually just Abbey."

"It's Emi, Emiko Pallone. Everyone just calls me Emi though for short," Relaxing back into her chair, Emi finally managed to gather together a smile. She was new to all this, and as long as she didn't embarrass herself overly so, she'd be fine. Watching both Aerandir and Dog, her large ears finally flickered back from her head, drooping either side of her face.

"And that brown furry thing is Toby. Nice to meet you Abbey." Leaning over, Emi held out her furry hand towards the woman. It was a polite gesture, and a rather courteous one at that.

Toby picked himself up to his feet at the n**. Shaking his paw in the air, the dog yipped happily. It had been a long time since he'd had anyone to play with, but you could always teach an old dog new tricks. Bending down onto his front paws, he moved just before the little Aerandir ran right into him. Wagging his tail, he trotted right around Emi's chair.

As if on cue the jar, inert up until that moment, jerked a little. The contents had swollen it seemed, as the two young women talked and a shining mass was eager to be released from the confines of the jar. It pressed, pulsing and small, hairline cracks began to appear in the glass.

Almost immediately the thing inside seemed to respond and pushed harder, the jars fractures becoming a strange crystalline network of lines. The glass shattered. Small pieces tinkled all around it, under Emiko's protective hands. Luckily for her, the recent glass bottles, newly made, had been used to house the most recent generation of Aerandir. Safety glass. Hexagonal pieces safely deflected off of her tawny fur as the gryphon began to form.

Unsteadily the little thing tried its best to balance on Emiko's lap. A fluffy white head swivelled up, bright yellow eyes searching.

Blanche. Emiko Pallone and Toby. Abbey ran over the names again clumsily in her head - she was never that good with remembering things. "Nice to meet you too, Emi," Abbey extended her own hand and shook the other hand lightly.

She had just leaned back into her seat when she heard the sound of crackling glass. She gasped, a hand to her mouth, as she watched the cracks lace steadily over the jar. False paused in scrambling after Toby, and watched the process in avid curiousity.

When Blanche had finally emerged from the glass, Abbey managed to speak, "She's beautiful."

False shifted closer to the chair and perched on his hind legs, trying to get a closer look at the white bundle of fluff and feathers.

The guardian barely noticed the first hairline cracks, nor the pulsating as the shining mass within pushed against the sides of its confinements. Blanche wanted out, and she wanted out now apparently. It was only when the outsides of her jar pushed hard against Emi's furry fingers that the woman glanced down towards her. Boy was she surprised.

"Blanche?" The woman managed to stutter. The jar shattered a moment later, the glass shards deflecting off the edge of her fingers. Now you'd think anyone's natural instinct would be just to let go, but Emi's furry fingers only slid back from the pulsating mass of glass and Blanche.

The last few pieces of glass fell around the woman's lap, and from the midst a gryphon sat. Unsteady on all four paws, Blanche did her best to get her balance. White tail flickered briefly, as her rather fluffy head swiveled up, large yellow eyes flickering from one side of the room to the other as if looking for something.

Awestruck was one word for it. Coughing, Emi wrapped her arms around the small gryphon to steady her. Her mouth opened as if to say something, but for the time being Emi was wordless. Watching Blanche's every move, Emi's large tail found itself flicking too and fro in a light wag. It was one thing imaging her, another to have the gryphon sitting on her lap. She was alive, Blanche was here.

Finally, the yellow orbs found it's way onto her guardians. A silent un-said moment passed between Aerandir and Guardian, the gryphon lapsing back against the woman's furry arms.

"It's alright...." Whispering encouragingly to the gryphon, Emi just beamed up towards Abbey. A proud beam that only parents could keep, holding her little one steady for the time being. She truly was beautiful.
"Thank you, Blanche really is," Emi murmured, feeling rather guilty for not having the courage or words at the moment to speak about anyone but herself.

Toby had other ideas. He'd paused throughout the whole transformation, and now his head cocked to one side at the sight of a white furry paw sliding off Emi's lap. Wagging his tail, he followed False, sitting down on the floor to inspect the young Aerandir more closely.

Abbey grinned back, admiring the newly born Aerandir. False shifted closer, and finally put his paws on the chair, snuffling Blanche curiously. Abbey watched him warily -- while she doubted he'd do anything dangerous, newborns had to be treated carefully.

The moment of relative calmness is broken by a short series of beeps. Abbey checked her watch and nibbled her lip, before lifting her gaze, a mixture of dismay and guilt evident as she rose from her chair, "I'm really sorry, but I have to go. I'm staying at house number five - feel free to drop in whenever. Me and False'll be in most times, or here at the lodge. I'm sure he'll enjoy spending time with Blanche."

She paused and False reluctantly left the other Aerandir to trot to Abbey's feet. She smiled at Emi, "Congratulations again. I'll talk to you later."

At the main doors she paused to leave her mail at the dropoff point, and with that, she strode out.

~*~

Sin sighed deeply as she inhaled the warm air of the lodge. It was good to be back here, not so soon after such a frightening event as an earthquake. At least the lodge was still in one piece.

She'd come looking for some books on the history of the islands, intent on teaching Gael some of the more interesting points of the island history, along with the history of the Aerandir in general.

She wasn't sure if there would be anything, though. But she was content to drag Gael along as she looked.

Gael padded silently along beside Sin, casting sidelong glances at her every once and a while. Sin had mentioned something about 'history' a completely alien word in Gael's book, and 'learning to read,' which Gael assumed meant to being able to take the bundles of paper and make some sense out of the strange glyphs that surrounded them.

Sin had said that they were going to the 'lodge,' and Gael was deeply curious to see what this old building had to do with anything. She knew that the sandy-colored man often frequented there, but in all honestly, she was unsure if she wanted to see him again - as last time she had found herself in a completely alien body.

She resigned herself to follow Sin into the lodge and head over to the large stack of bundled paper in the corner, where Sin was leafing though one of the many novels.
